PS3 UK Demand

You see into the future or have this amazing crystal ball right? Dont forget that it will eventually get cheaper to manufacture.

Interseting thread ;)

I dont think there will be the huge rush to buy as prevoiusly said due to the time of year, christmas will be the tell tale time to see how popular it is.

It does have a hefty price for a console but its cheap for a blue ray player so which do you want??

If its a console then you know its way over priced but it does have some good games lined up in the future and the 'HOME' system looks really good. Still not enough to justify spending over £500 for a game console, game and extra controller. :(

If on the other hand you want a blue ray player go grab it on launch date its a steal at that price. :)

Just because they release a million to Europe, I don't think that means they only have 1 million PAL spec machines. I'm guessing they have a lot more than that, But they are releasing them in batches.

It would be good business sense anyways

Now that you mention it i would think it is some sort of internal switch to change a neutral console to pal or ntsc :p

Is the UK still getting 220,000 units?...Read on AVForums it had been upped to 300,000?.....Wasn't sure how true that was, even at 220,000 it's not surprising everywhere is still taking pre orders.

I too suffer New Console Syndrome and fear i'll end up buying one just to try it eventually....I live by the rule, that i can buy something, if i don't like it i sell it and make a small loss but atleast i can say i tried!

Always seems like such good logic at the time :(

I could get one but only F1CE interests me as the other launch titles are not anything special. Even then I threw GP4 onto my 40" HDTV and the screen shots look close anyway and thats coming from a 5 year old DX7/8 PC game!!

Motorstorm looks nice but is very limited RFOM looks like any other generic FPS on the PC and if that is being touted as their best launch title Sony will struggle to sell out for months.

Sony need to realise that quality games sell consoles not blu-ray drives or virtual world gui's!!!

Have they even seen how close an upscaled SD-DVD is to HD-DVD or Blu-Ray??

Unless you have money to burn why would you replace perfectly good DVDs with the HD version when the difference is not huge to begin with.

Joe Public just does not care about extra premium features only experienced gamers do. If the price was much lower and Blu-ray was an option then it would do better. For now it will struggle and maybe towards xmas when more worthwhile games appear it may do better.

According to UKResistance (the greatest source for anti-sony news :) ), absoloutley nowhere is filling their allotment of preorders and places are even backtracking on steep priced bundles in order to shift them.

I'm not gonna link to UKR though as there are probably swearies in at least one of the updates !!

This has turned into a bit of a debate between the "its too expensive" and "its expensive because".

The console is actually cheaper than it should be (sony selling at a loss) hence why they dropped some of the PS2 EE support because it saves them money on manufacturing, and why this reduction in manufacturing costs doesnt translate to a cheaper reatail price. So the price is justified, and what you're getting is basically a good deal.

I personally will not buy a console to play games on that costs £425 when the competition offers a good range of games and interface devices for HALF the cost, I dont want BLU-RAY, the only reason sony included this in the console is they thought "we're backing this blu-ray format, so we'll exploit the lead we have in the home console market to get it into people's home", technically a good move, and it worked with the PS2, PS2 sold bucket loads in japan because it was the cheapest DVD player availible for a while.

The PS3 offers nothing above its competition other than a little more horsepower and blu-ray.

In response to the OP though; I dont think there will be a shortage of the consoles, because of the price, and for that reason only. The demand for the PS3 isnt really that high because of the good and varied competition.

One of my customer has a brother in LA and he managed to get hold of a PS3 and stripped it down and noticed that the power supply at least was 110-230 50/60, not sure about that switch though, but considering the power supply I'd say there is.

I would have imagined that it's just the original OS firmware which would deiferentiate (spelling!) the consoles. Obviously the PAL ones will now have different hardware because the emotion engine's been dropped, but before that they would have surely been all the same as it would make production costs lower?

Well if they set the price to nearly meet demand then they've got it about right, maximise profit and sell your stock.

Its a shame the public are such suckers.. now whats my credit limit ;)

Had to buy a new laptop this morning (long story about how my last one kind of got dropped on a stone floor) and asked the guys in * Beverley how the PS3 presales were going. We've only had 2 or 3, no ones interested was the reply.

I know it's only Beverley but I think it's safe to say you'll be able to get one at launch.

That's what I thought, what's the point of making different models for different countries when it's cheaper to make 1 batch for everyone.

Id rather they drop the blu-ray player out and knock a couple of hundred off the price tag tbh. I'd never use the blu-ray player. All i want is a damn console that will play GAMES and non of this fancy stuff that is blatantly bumping up the prices. The blu ray player should have been an optional add-on imo.

But then you wouldnt be able to play any games as they are all out on BD!!!

In the Current market in the UK the PS3 feels expensive because:

1) A HD 28-32" TV only costs £400 now (not the best make but doesn't matter)

2) A home PC or Laptop can be bought off the shelf for £400 (an a ok'ish one at that)

3) The Xbox 360 is £280 for a premium with a couple of games or £350 for a decent sized bundle

4) The Wii is about £300 with a few controllers and games

5) Most shops are only selling the PS3 at £500+ bundles.

6) The PS3 is a lot more expensive in the UK than it is in the US etc.

The PS3 is good value and a cheap way of getting BR media to play but then why bother when the average person is happy with a £30 DVD player and £7 DVDs and probably will not a HD tv.

I would say that the PS3 will be in stock on launch day. The initial batch will make people a few £££ on ebay and, at a big guess it may take a while to sell out, since it looks like there will be enough supply and not enough hard core gamers with the money to spend in March to buy it etc etc.

I also think its a good thing that they have included the BR player since it brings a new media to the average family and by xmas this will be a big plus for Sony and us. In a couple of years the PS3 could still be the chepaest all in 1 BR player accounting for price drops etc which can only be a good thing.
