PS4 and Xbox Rumours

IF the leaks are true, which thus far everything in them has been, then first party PS4 games are going to look a lot better than Xbox One first party games, since the PS4 will have a lot more memory bandwidth and 50% more shaders.

lol. Source?

If publishers carry on like they are doing, all the top selling game franchises will use the Xbox One as their lead development console.

If Sony don't redesign the PS4, they'll have no home entertainment hub features, or a viable Kinect rival.

so it's for if you want to game in between watching something?

it sounds like something i honestly would never use.

also voice control is usually a load of crap, i mean if you have a samsung smart tv and activate voice control and you have friends over, if your having a conversation (which is what normally happens) it will randomly adjust the volume, channel, etc.

the technology just isn't that good tbh, it doesn't work properly enough, unless of course the kinect is a lot better than samsungs efforts anyway. will need to wait and see if it can actually differentiate between conversations and voice controls.

for instance if theres something on tv i want to watch i turn the other thing im using off to watch it, with this i could switch to it, but essentially i now have 2 devices powered on, meaning i am consuming more electricity. not a very efficient way of doing things.

also with only 1 hdmi in, i have to choose between connecting my sky+ hd box or my htpc which again doesn't make it fit to use as a "receiver" most half decent av receivers have at least 4 hdmi slots these days.

That's because the Samsung voice control sucks. The kinects voice control is decent and apparently the new one is a further step up.

Sure, it's not 100%, but don't compare it to the Samsung poor attempt.

they should have released 2 consoles, one which is a basic machine, and one with all the added guff imo.

I've seen this attitude before, in photography when they introduce video into DSLR.

Some photographers took this almost elitist opinion that it ruins the camera, that they don't want it or need it, it is not a feature they use and would some how think the camera would be cheaper (let's face it, its not cheap, it is a £2,000 body) if they had left out the video feature and even made your suggestion that they should make 2 different models. They got this idea that video should be in consumer compact cameras and stay there. That video had no place in a £2,000 camera and it somehow "cheapens" it for them, ruins it even.

That was about 5 years ago?

Time have moved on, those people don't say the same thing anymore, they realise that if you don't want to use it, don't press that button. It doesn't take away the capability of the rest of the camera. Then they also realise what video really can do in a DSLR with all the lenses that they had, when in the right hands, it produces amazing images and videos and it took off in a big way. It showed that in the right hands, for a lot of people, it is a great thing to have.

As for making it cheaper...it means having 2 production lines and would make the overall production cost higher which is not good for consumers.

I would say the same thing apply here. The additional stuff are software based, most of the hardware horsepower and made for games so I am not sure how much different 2 different model can be plus if you don't want those features, don't press those buttons on screen, it is really that simple. Moaning about it won't change a thing, it is the way the industry is going, you either get on board or be left behind.

Every single leak from Vgleaks about the PS4 and Xbox One have been true, there's a reason that Microsoft were vague about the specs, because they are using DDR3 with embedded SRAM on the GPU, which is why they used the 5 billion transistors line, the SRAM uses up a lot of transistors.

VGleaks also had the PS4 GPU at 18 CU with the Xbox only having 12.

Not to mention the new Xbox only has 5GB of RAM available for games.

http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2013/05/21/xbox-hardware-evolution-chart.aspx

[edit]

Microsoft has confirmed the 12 CU for Xbox.

The Xbox One's eight CPU cores each can each handle six operations per cycle, while its GPU handles 768 operations per cycle. Microsoft Xbox panelist Nick Baker, who worked on the console's processors, stated that the chips have power switches inside the silicon, adding, "It can actually turn off cores that are not being used." Baker also said that the Xbox One has five custom pieces of silicon that are split between the main console and the Kinect device.

768 operations per cycle is 12 CU, so if clockspeed is 800MHz as the leak suggests, this means the Xbox has 1.2TF compared to the 1.8TF of the PS4.

An 8x Blu-ray drive is only 36MB/s. To even come close to a hard-drive it'd need to be faster, which means more noise. A HDD is a far better option in every way.

Fair enough, I didn't realise 8x drives were that slow and noise would be a massive issue I didn't even think of (although in hindsight I recall my 360 being very load when spinning the discs excessively in some games like PGR and similarly the PS3 spinning too much in COD games).

An upgradeable hard drive would have been the best option, I liked this feature on PS3. Shame the One won't have one and nor will the PS4 :(

I may have mentioned it elsewhere, but why don't they just cache to a reserved area of the HDD like the 1st xbox used to? Mandatory full game installs just seems like a bad idea to me that would make your disk run out of space very quickly.

As for making it cheaper...it means having 2 production lines and would make the overall production cost higher which is not good for consumers.

the 360 always had 2 different models throughout it's life and so did the ps3, although the main difference was only usually the hard drive size which could have been added in later down the line. but initially the ps3 did have 2 completely different models, those with BC and those without, also the BC models had 4 USB ports instead of 2 as well as a memory card hub.

so it would only be higher if this time they only have 1 model at any one time being produced, which for last gen wasn't the case. although it would be later down the line than normal if it is just a hard drive size difference.

e.g. right now there is a ps3 12GB super slim and a ps3 500GB super slim.

so i take it their is only 1 version of both consoles going to be available?

This time it is different. They both use "standard" pc components and Hard drives are integral to the products.

As a result (initially) if you get 2 models it will just be different Hard drive capacities.

As for the cheaper argument, everything these days is "system on a chip" taking out those features or having separate chips to create a 2nd model would cost more rather than less. Personally I think less models is less confusing to customers (albeit they end up paying a higher price rather than having 2 entry points)

You don't want the extra features, don't use them. You don't like the price, shop around or wait for deals

i hope both consoles launch at the same time, so a clear winner can be seen.

i will be opting for the one which has the better gaming capabilities. i also won't buy at launch, i will wait 6 months at least to ensure their hasn't been a HUGE **** up that was the 360 at launch. i went through quite a few due to the design flaws.

My day one 360 is still working. It sounds horrendous but has never failed and my son plays need for speed on it quite a bit.

Now I have said that it will fail......

everyone i know personally who has had a 360 has went through at least 3, i think we are on our 6th, due to the 5th replacement console dying last year and having to go out and buy a brand new one last year.

I have had two s models due to the first failing. My launch one should not work it sounds awful like its about to go bang but yet it runs for hours without issue. Lucky I suppose...

anyway i hope both companies have learnt their lesson especially MS. i have never had a sony console fail on me during its life up until the ps3 and trust me the ps1 and ps2 went through extensive use and the ps3 lasted 5 years and 10 months which imo was some good innings.

the 360 on the other hand, i dont think my first one lasted a year, and like i say i have had 6 360's and only 2 ps3's in roughly the same amount of time and its the first time a playstation has died on me.

i think i donated my ps1 and ps2's to a kids hospital ward along with some games after finding them in the attic a few years back and they were still in working condition.

So far the PS4 is looking to have the better graphics at least.

Actually genuinely a bit narked by Microsoft's greed. I knew it would be bad but really the Xbox One is greed personified..

Bad points:

Windows 8 based OS (A lot of people hate W8). Here it's being forced upon them.
Non changeable Internal Hard Drive. (All game require installation so extra hard drives will need to be purchased)
Requires daily internet connection or stops games working and other features. (WOW)
Pay extra to play games online (Xbox Gold)
Pay extra fee for other people to use the same games, fee is full game RRP.
Looks like a VHS / CD Player hybrid from the 1980's (Not in a cool retro way either)
If you rent a movie, Kinect will scan the room to see how many people are viewing it and charge you more per person. (WTF!)

Good points:

Halo?
Good if your an American Football fan..
Please fill this in..

On the pad:

After holding one for a few minutes, I can say officially that the Xbox One controller is very nice. It's just more comfortable. This comes from a variety of alterations, like moving the batteries into the controller itself to making the back one solid piece, but the biggest change is moving the center of gravity closer to your body, giving you less to prop up on the far end.

The improved D-Pad is far, far easier to use than the current version's, the analog sticks have an easier to handle give to them, and the center Xbox button is moved farther up, which feels a little more natural. Overall, it's supposed to fit in more hand sizes more comfortably.

On the new vibrating triggers:

But that rumbling. It really does seem like it can add a better immersive experience.
