PS4 and Xbox Rumours

Hmmm
Van Der Leeuw went on to explain the differences between PS4 and a high-powered PC. “A PC is a number of parts which also has bridges in between where there are inefficiencies that may not be exactly the right match. We’ve got the right amount of memory, video card, everything balanced out. I know it was a very conscious effort to make sure that, with the speed of the memory, the amount of compute units, the speed of the hard-drive that we put in, that there would not be any bottlenecks. So the amount of pixel-pushers that you have, the amount of memory, the speed of your compute units make sure that you don’t hit any of the weakspots of the hardware.”
Unless they go SSD thats pretty much rubbish. Anythings better than 2xBD of the PS3 though, just dont think the HDD wont be a bottleneck unless you put silly effort in streamlining how data is read from it...

This balancing of PS4’s architecture and the use of complementary components make it simpler to work with, said Van Der Leeuw. “Whereas if you have a PC very often your buffs, or your express buffs are very slow compared to your video RAM which is GDDR5 and your main RAM then is even slower than that, but you compensate by sticking buffers in there… there’s a lot of things to contemplate in the fact that it is a replaceable-parts architecture. This [PS4] is where all of the parts are designed to work together, naturally.”
Does anyone else read that as a subtle shot across MSs bows - really want MS to pull this off as it seems (for some mad reason) theyve got it all to prove. Uncertainty and lack of official news is never seen as a good thing I guess...

Its quite a simplfied article on the whole matter really - doubt it will appease the uninformed. EDIT: Its curious that the article only talks about hardware inefficiencies when in reality the biggest one is software APIs, its not that hard to 'build' a suitable PC where the goal is to reduce perceived bottlenecks.

Looks like PS4 is the way forward if the new xbox does require always online, at least for me, such a dumbass move and if PS4 has PS+ it will blow the next xbox out the water

This is something else Sony are working on though - they'll probably allow direct access to hardware through their libraries which MS will absolutely not permit.

Oh I know, why it seemed conspicuous by its absence, technically its probably be the main thing that makes the PS4 exclusives stand apart from multiplats.

Id like to understand more about how multiplats might perform considering the same architectures and if its the case that the developer could treat each console as effectively 2 'different PC specs' (effectively configuring settings that complement the individual console, like we do individually on a PC title). Is that too much of a simplification?

They're 100% offering to the metal coding. I think it was one of the Sony presidents that announced it, Yoshida?!

But yeah, its one of the hot points that devs like.

Interesting-

Microsoft's next-generation Xbox, codenamed Durango, will not require an always-online internet connection and will work in tandem with a new Xbox 360 add-on for backwards compatibility.

That's according to VGLeaks, citing a source as saying that the console will have always-online functionality, but the lack of connection will not prevent users from playing local content, and it will also not prevent the use of second-hand games.
This comes in direct contrast to previous controversial rumours which have suggested all content on the new console will be locked without a live connection to the internet.

VGLeaks reports that those rumours are actually likely linked to the new 'reoriented' Xbox 360, which it says will be a small device pitched as a cheap - around $149 or lower - set-top media box with added 360 and XBLA game support to compete with Apple TV.

Interestingly, the report claims this new Xbox 360 "is likely to not" have its own disc drive, and all content will need to be downloaded digitally. However, connecting it directly with Durango will allow users to play disc-based Xbox 360 games on their Durango console with the help of the add-on Xbox.

"Putting in an Xbox 360 disc into Durango will prompt the user to attach the supporting device that is sold separately. By separating the two devices and their functions it will ensure price competitiveness for both pieces of hardware," says the report.

Multiple recent reports have claimed that Microsoft's original plan to unveil its next console at the end of April - as first reported by CVG - has been shifted to an event in May.

VGLeaks corroborates, saying the delay was due to Microsoft "not having a physical set of devices to show" and "specification changes".

Yay, Backward compatibility. :)

Only skim read it as I have to vanish for work, but I wonder if the device will be needed for games purchased from Xbox live, or if its just disk based games.

I imagine its both.

ALL 360 games will have to run on the "add-on" 360. There is no emulation going on in the new Xbox.

That report contradicts it's self, it said the durango doesn't have a disc drive but then said when you insert a 360 disc in, you'll be prompted to attach this new 360 addon.

Surely the addon and the disc drive come as one if the durango doesn't physically have one.

It says "the report claims this new Xbox 360 "is likely to not" have its own disc drive". The "new Xbox 360" will be the add-on for the Durango, not the Durango itself.

So the Next box will have a blu ray drive and will have an add on box available which will enable the next box to play current 360 games.

This add on box won't have a disc drive and will work stand alone but can't play disc based 360 games unless you add the next box

Makes sense to me.

I'd rather just keep my current xbox than pay out for an add on. Hopefully you can have your gamer tag on both consoles or make it easily transferable.

Yep, that's the main thing that would stop me getting one as i'm wanting to sign up with lovefilm in time for the nextbox release. The always online would be a pain but if I end up buying both consoles again it won't be a huge problem as I would have the PS4 to fall back on if my internet was to go down.

I'm actually really looking forward to the next gen BF4. 64 players will be awesome, hopefully a few of the gays we normally play with will get it also.

For about 20 minutes until everyone goes back to COD because it's insta kill and requires little effort or practice :p

Which is why I prefer BF as it takes skill to actually do good at. I really hope there will be a few people off here playing it so I don't have to play COD and get angry all the time at the BS, and listen to everyone else get angry also :p

Maybe this will make people think in the future before they write something on the internet.

Adam Orth, Microsoft Studio's Creative Director last week took to Twitter to suggest that people upset by rumours that the next Xbox would require an always-on Internet connection should just "deal with it" and move on. Now it seems like it's him that's moved on.

Reports around the internet suggest that Orth has now left his role at Microsoft. It's not clear if he was pushed or left of his own freewill. It's a shame really, as all he was doing was giving his personal opinion. But it seems the internet can't handle people having an opinion, so yet another talented person moves on.

The next Xbox is expected to be announced soon. Whether or not it includes an online connection or not remains to be seen.
