PSVR launching October @ £349

Watching some streams and reading reviews. Very concerned that about the tracking issues, that will be a deal breaker. My friend has ordered one and I will try it out. With a fair bit more experience with VR, I will see what the system is capable of and attempt troubleshooting if there are issues.

However, for what is supposed to be the 'consumer VR', this was supposed to be the plug and play version that will bring it to the masses. It should have been flawless. But this is what happens maybe if you try to make first gen tech at a low price....

I've watched a lot of the reviews and it looks like the tracking works better if your fairly close to the camera or in a darkened room. Not so bad for me as as I tend to play very late in the day anyway.

One guy gave a very good review and he was sitting less than a few feet away which surprised me as any of store demos I've watched have been around the two meter mark or more and the setup guide enclosed recommends quite a lot of space for it to work.

I was very worried about the distance but it doesn't seem to be an issue.

My biggest concern isn't the lower resolution or the lower quality graphics I can cope with that. I'm more concerned about how clear the picture is. a lot have said it appears blurred or out of focus.

Nothing has really put me off buying one though. One week to go

I posted about my demo experience over on r/psvr earlier, but for those who might be interested and don't venture onto Reddit..

---

I've just got back from demoing PSVR at Meadowhall. For non brits, it's large shopping center located in Sheffield (that city where the Full Monty is set).

The whole setup was professionally run, and before I'd checked in, I ended up chatting with one of the reps for 5 minutes about my previous VR experience, and how there wasn't a killer app yet for VR. He actually said probably one of the best experiences he'd ever had was back when Alien Isolation was demoed back on the DK2, which maybe a Sony rep shouldn't have really being saying, but I appreciated the honesty ;)
I ended up playing Rigs. I'd estimate the camera was about 7 feet or so away from the chair, and the lighting was very subdued. Anyway, onto the important stuff.

Comfort. Holy ****. Nailed it. People have said how good it is, but I really didn't think it would be THAT comfortable. Perfectly balanced, and feels very soft and light despite being the heaviest of the main 3 HMDs. The best thing though - I wear glasses, which I find a major pain with the Rift. With PSVR, there was literally no issue. Wearing glasses with it felt the same as, well, just the same as wearing them normally. With the Rift, I'm constantly aware of the HMD gripping the arms, and pushing them against my nose or moving them about if I adjust the HMD. If you wear glasses, the PSVR is so much better that there's no contest. Even if you don't, it's still more comfortable. I couldn't feel any pressure on my head anywhere - it makes the Rift design seem a bit of a joke really (though I still like the built in headphones).

Resolution - if anything is a letdown, it's the res. I'd say it's the weakest point of the headset. I instantly noticed some pretty bad and chunky aliasing, though that will vary from title to title. With Rigs, there didn't seem to be any (at least on the blue lines of the cockpit). At a distance, there was a massive lack of definition. Things just devolved into, well, pixels. Saying that, I can live with it - you're talking to someone who played through Xenoblade Chronicles on the 3DS though, so your opinion may differ. However, that leads onto another strong point - the SDE.

Screendoor effect - way better than the Rift. I'm quite sensitive to the SDE (more so that a lot of people going by posts I've read since the Rift launched). I tried looking for it, and when really trying to see it, thought I could see a faint pattern of dots (but not a grid), but even then it was more of "is there something there, I'm not sure". Then the guy giving the demo started talking to me, I forgot about it, and didn't see any SDE for the entire demo. When looking into the distance during the game the low resolution stood out, but I couldn't notice a SDE. As soon as I got back home, I put my Rift on and was actually shocked by how easily I could notice it and how bad the SDE suddenly seemed.

FoV - better than the Rift. Simple as that. Not massively, but certainly noticeable. No streaky godrays, and not having any horrible binocular overlap either is just so nice. The screen appeared bright as well, though Rigs is certainly is a bright game so I can't comment on dark levels. I must admit, I'd like to try it again on a Neo with some supersampling enabled just to see if it could take the edge off the resolution.

Tracking - since I was playing Rigs, I can only comment on the HMD tracking, as it doesn't track the gamepad like Battlezone does. Facing directly forward, the tracking seemed rock solid. Quite handily, the guy giving the demo was telling me to take my time, and to take in the experience (I was impressed with this - I wasn't rushed at all) before starting the match. Leaning forward and back, side to side seemed spot on. Turning 90 degrees to the right to examine one of the large mounted guns though caused the tracking to exhibit some slight wobble. While it was immediately noticeable, is was only a slight amount, and I'd compare it to what happens with my Rift if I sit too far away from it's sensor in my living room. Turning face forward again though and it was stable. Once the game started, I didn't notice any tracking issues. Annoyingly when I checked in at the experience, I was offered either Rigs or VR Worlds. Stupidly, I just associated VR Worlds with the shark demo, so chose Rigs. It didn't occur to me to ask them if I could play The Heist, as I could then have tried the Move controllers. Stupid, stupid..

Overall - am I keeping my preorder? Yes. Will you be happy with PSVR? It depends. If you're purely a console gamer, then probably yes. If, like me, you're both a PC and console gamer, again it's probably a yes. If you're a PC only, won't touch a console gamer, then it's a no - but why did you read this anyway?

My apologies to Luke, my Rigs demo rep. After 3 years or so of playing VR games, I think he was a bit gutted that I just took the demo in my stride and that my jaw wasn't hitting the floor :)

TL;DR: I'm a Rift owner, demoed PSVR, keeping my pre-order. Comfort while VR gaming rocks. Just a shame about that aliasing/resolution..

I take it there is no way this would work with a PC? Sounds as if it would be a lot more comfortable than the Rift.

I guess i'm quite lucky as i cant see the SDE on the CV1 at all lol. But yeah the lower res of the PSVR would bother me a lot i think.

From reading reviews its getting 5*. Tracking is said to be excellent including behind you. You dont get motion sickness due to high refresh rates. Just plugs in and plays.

downsides so far were :-
gap in bottom of headset
Slight screen door effect.
cables, cables, cables, cables, cables
Switching PS4 off doesnt switch control unit off you have to switch that off too.
Resolution 1080p not as good as others but still satisfactory.
the £349 is not quite right after buying all the kit comes out at £464

Its been received as a much all round experience than the PC VR. I reckon this will sell bucketloads.

I've read quite a lot of reviews, and almost all have said that the tracking is a bit dodgy. They quite unanimously agree that it is the most comfortable headset available though.

Picked mine up thismorning. I was the only one there lol.

This is my first proper highish end vr experience. I never did get to try out oculus or vive but I have to say it's very impressive.

The first thing everyone will notice is how low resolution everything looks but that doesn't seem to matter ( at least to me) when the game starts going. As soon as there's is movement while running, driving or just looking around you are immersed in the game. And it's more grainy than blurred which is what I was worried about. The picture is very clear but it looks like film grain is the best way I can describe it.

I didn't notice any lag or delay at all whilst looking around. This part of it is spot on. Even little things like moving the analog stick and seeing it move onscreen is perfect.

The tracking issue is there but it's not a massive problem as it does find the light quite quickly so you can carry on playing.

I really love it. You do kind of feel like your looking through something sometimes rather than being in it if you try to look far left or right but I guess that's the same for all vr.

Cinematic mode. It's not going to be for everyone. The middle screen size option worked best for me while playing destiny. The graphics do take a big hit in resolution but it is very playable. It's ideal if your in the living room like me and someone wants to use the tv.

The odd thing is after playing in cinematic mode and removing the headset my TV looked freaking tiny so it just goes to show how effective the experience is.

I'm not disappointed at all.

I set mine up today (for the kids of course), sorry in advance of ramblings I'm no reviewer.

I had experienced VR of sorts on Google Cardboard, I was unsure how this would stack up..... but in summary my mind was totally blown

-Into the deep: This got me sweating, very immersive, and the best place to start.

-Rez infinite and thumper demos were amazing

-Amelie is a cute little animation that the kids will love. What blew my mind is while sitting there with this little cloud village surrounding me I could peer around objects and see the main characters from different view points.

-Headmaster demo had me leaping around the room heading balls

-Tried a few more bits and bobs and finished with London Heist experience, which to date was the greatest bit of video gaming I've ever played even though it's only 20mins long.

What I didn't know, and not sure if others know.... everything is in stereoscopic 3D, and coupled with what I've read is like a 250" screen in front of your eyes immersive is a understatement. Even the staging room in VR Worlds is epic, you feel like you are actually there. That little addon box does wonders at giving you 90-120fps, and works fantastic.

Had no problems with tracking, even with the move controllers, they actually started feeling like my hands in London Heist, smoking cigars, picking up cans of drink, loading guns..... at one stage I got so into it I leaned on a virtual object to find myself falling off chair. Tracking when looking behind fine, only the odd issue when looking straight down or when you get so into it you leave play area :)

Quality of the screen is great, I could even wear my glasses under visor no issues.

Downsides... On occasion I stuggled to get perfect focus moving the visor around, but I've not calibrated eye distance yet so I suspect this will fix it. Also I noticed many things in the background do get blurry, but tbh you are so focused on the foreground you forget it quickly. As previous posted said it's a little grainy, but i think it's down to coatings on lenses to help smooth everything out a bit. You only notice on static dark objects though and soon forget once in moving gameplay

I understand this is not Rift or Vive is some respects, but I doubt they give that much more, and in some ways probably less... from a boxed ready to roll VR solution I think Sony will sell millions and millions.

I for one will never play a normal flat boring game again, accessible VR has changed everything, and Sony did it :), and they did it with ageing PS4 hardware and pulled it off. Truly amazing!

I have psvr but I'm waiting for ps4 pro so don't have a ps4 right now

Cinematic mode works on pc, I have been watching roller coaster pov vids on YouTube all morning lol :D it's not vr but that cinema screen will do me for a bit lol

Only problem is on pc its very blurry reading text on websites and screen door effect is very noticeable

4k down scaled on it looks great though

I really hope they do sell millions. If they do, it will kickstart more development of VR titles and this is good for VR as a whole, Rift and Vive included.

I will take a back seat and wait until hopefully the technology takes route and the cost comes down. Love the idea of it but I'm a lazy gamer who like to sit or lay down when gaming.

i haven't stood up yet to play :D i dont think the costs will decrease much as i think the specs will increase while maintaining a price point.

i haven't tried VR on a PC to compare the PSVR to but I would be interested to know how tey do compare.

I am so pleased with the PSVR, it is so good and the experience is incredible. It's early days but on day one there was a good collection of games and demos.

What good games are there on the PC for VR?

Im guessing here the main difference you would see on rift or vive and a powerful PC is no downsampling of quality on distant objects... I've heard screen door effect is actually worse than PSVR though.

Tracking would also be better...

2 days into ownership now and nothing really bad to report... though had tracking issues with move controllers in bright light.

Also one game on VR worlds I played for 20 mins earlier has made me feel sick all day, I almost heaved. Avoid scavengers odyssey at all costs if you suffer from motion sickness.
