I posted about my demo experience over on r/psvr earlier, but for those who might be interested and don't venture onto Reddit..
---
I've just got back from demoing PSVR at Meadowhall. For non brits, it's large shopping center located in Sheffield (that city where the Full Monty is set).
The whole setup was professionally run, and before I'd checked in, I ended up chatting with one of the reps for 5 minutes about my previous VR experience, and how there wasn't a killer app yet for VR. He actually said probably one of the best experiences he'd ever had was back when Alien Isolation was demoed back on the DK2, which maybe a Sony rep shouldn't have really being saying, but I appreciated the honesty
I ended up playing Rigs. I'd estimate the camera was about 7 feet or so away from the chair, and the lighting was very subdued. Anyway, onto the important stuff.
Comfort. Holy ****. Nailed it. People have said how good it is, but I really didn't think it would be THAT comfortable. Perfectly balanced, and feels very soft and light despite being the heaviest of the main 3 HMDs. The best thing though - I wear glasses, which I find a major pain with the Rift. With PSVR, there was literally no issue. Wearing glasses with it felt the same as, well, just the same as wearing them normally. With the Rift, I'm constantly aware of the HMD gripping the arms, and pushing them against my nose or moving them about if I adjust the HMD. If you wear glasses, the PSVR is so much better that there's no contest. Even if you don't, it's still more comfortable. I couldn't feel any pressure on my head anywhere - it makes the Rift design seem a bit of a joke really (though I still like the built in headphones).
Resolution - if anything is a letdown, it's the res. I'd say it's the weakest point of the headset. I instantly noticed some pretty bad and chunky aliasing, though that will vary from title to title. With Rigs, there didn't seem to be any (at least on the blue lines of the cockpit). At a distance, there was a massive lack of definition. Things just devolved into, well, pixels. Saying that, I can live with it - you're talking to someone who played through Xenoblade Chronicles on the 3DS though, so your opinion may differ. However, that leads onto another strong point - the SDE.
Screendoor effect - way better than the Rift. I'm quite sensitive to the SDE (more so that a lot of people going by posts I've read since the Rift launched). I tried looking for it, and when really trying to see it, thought I could see a faint pattern of dots (but not a grid), but even then it was more of "is there something there, I'm not sure". Then the guy giving the demo started talking to me, I forgot about it, and didn't see any SDE for the entire demo. When looking into the distance during the game the low resolution stood out, but I couldn't notice a SDE. As soon as I got back home, I put my Rift on and was actually shocked by how easily I could notice it and how bad the SDE suddenly seemed.
FoV - better than the Rift. Simple as that. Not massively, but certainly noticeable. No streaky godrays, and not having any horrible binocular overlap either is just so nice. The screen appeared bright as well, though Rigs is certainly is a bright game so I can't comment on dark levels. I must admit, I'd like to try it again on a Neo with some supersampling enabled just to see if it could take the edge off the resolution.
Tracking - since I was playing Rigs, I can only comment on the HMD tracking, as it doesn't track the gamepad like Battlezone does. Facing directly forward, the tracking seemed rock solid. Quite handily, the guy giving the demo was telling me to take my time, and to take in the experience (I was impressed with this - I wasn't rushed at all) before starting the match. Leaning forward and back, side to side seemed spot on. Turning 90 degrees to the right to examine one of the large mounted guns though caused the tracking to exhibit some slight wobble. While it was immediately noticeable, is was only a slight amount, and I'd compare it to what happens with my Rift if I sit too far away from it's sensor in my living room. Turning face forward again though and it was stable. Once the game started, I didn't notice any tracking issues. Annoyingly when I checked in at the experience, I was offered either Rigs or VR Worlds. Stupidly, I just associated VR Worlds with the shark demo, so chose Rigs. It didn't occur to me to ask them if I could play The Heist, as I could then have tried the Move controllers. Stupid, stupid..
Overall - am I keeping my preorder? Yes. Will you be happy with PSVR? It depends. If you're purely a console gamer, then probably yes. If, like me, you're both a PC and console gamer, again it's probably a yes. If you're a PC only, won't touch a console gamer, then it's a no - but why did you read this anyway?
My apologies to Luke, my Rigs demo rep. After 3 years or so of playing VR games, I think he was a bit gutted that I just took the demo in my stride and that my jaw wasn't hitting the floor
TL;DR: I'm a Rift owner, demoed PSVR, keeping my pre-order. Comfort while VR gaming rocks. Just a shame about that aliasing/resolution..
