thing to remember with a TRUE is that it has very dense fins.. so you need a high static pressure fan in single configuration or two fans in push-pull to make sure that you pull airflow through the cooler.. The fin density does mean it will allow those extra 200/300mhz over something like a tuniq for example.
if you are aiming for 3.4ghz or so there is no point in getting a TRUE as other "low end coolers" will allow this sort of clock for less cost.. 3.4ghz - 3.6ghz generally needs something like a Tuniq... 3.6ghz+ is where the TRUE comes into its element.. And I think I should clarify when I am talking about "3.4ghz" I mean primestable at those clocks.. anyone can boot at 4ghz on the stock cooler as long as the rig is under low amounts of load
To give you an idea of cooler performance on a Q6600 the following is taken from a spreedsheet I have that details all the 8 hour primestable clocks on Q6600 here and on the XS forums:
My temps with a TRUE 120 black and 2 1500rpm fans in push/pull.
@idle (full prime95 load they reach 68-68-62-62)
Pic of cooler setup.
I can run superpi @ 4.2ghz on a stock cooler with "ok" temps doesnt mean it would last 1/10th of a second at any reasonable load
am not saying that CPU wont do 4ghz... just not primestable @ 1.45v or at reasonable temps with an AC7
I have just sold this CPU
Im the new owner of this chip from craigius.
Im hoping not to have to spend 46quid odd on a true as i already have exceptional case cooling in a thermaltake kandalf super tower and right now have my 8800gtx cards @ 42c and 49c and an E6600 clocked @ 3.5 with 1.5v going through it, high i know but each core right now idle at 24c,23c and
42c,38c at load. cooled with ac7 and as5 paste. Hoping to get this q6600 to 3.5 without much trouble as its also now lapped. Also got noctua nc6 and evercool on my chipset also at 44c, 43c
The Kandalf also has a huge 25cm fan blowing directly on to the cpu/ram area also so that helps.
