Q6600 Cooling

Finally got my q6600 stable @ 3.6 ~1.3v on my 680i A1 using an AC7:D

After a alittle more tinkering i managed to get it stable with reasonable temps under 100% load. Did this by relaxing my ram timings and performing the 680i pencil vdroop mod. Set at 1.3125 in bios, 1.3v actual in windows and 1.304 under prime95 load:) Amazing mod done in 30 seconds. Higher chipset volts also stable now aided by my Noctua nc-6 and evercool southbridge cooler.

Still a little difference between the cores at load, not quite sure why that is but hey im happy anyway bearing in mind its still in its "burn in" period;)

I also run a q6600 on a 680i mainboard (EVGA to be exact) and would love to know if I should be able to get 3GHz out of it with a stock cooler fitted. What are uncomfortably high temps for a q6600. I know lower is better but what would be max ok load temps. Since getting my HD4870x2 I had decided I want to try and push the cpu a little more and will consider getting a TRUE or Tuniq or perhaps just the Arctic. Also sorry to be a noob but what is the pencil vdroop mod? Would love to push more out of my 680i as I don't really want to switch mainboards as yet.

Rest of build is in sig if anyone has any recommendations.

I would get a new cooler before you start thinking about clocking maybe past 3ghz, Ive never used a stock cooler so i dont know how far you can go. You will also need to boost your chipset volts a bit but watch the temps as the stock heatpipe nforce fan gets quite hot and blows straight on to the cpu heatsink.

My board is an EVGA like yours but also take into consideration my q6600 has a low default voltage (VID) 1.2375.

Heres a pic of the pencil mod using a number 2 hb pencil. I went along the red line about 6 times booted into windows and my massive vdroop was history:D

Thanks for the pic, although I still don't understand what the vdroop actually is and what the benefit of doing the mod is for. How do I check the default voltage of my chip?

Should I have any difficulty in clocking it to 3GHz with stock cooler and voltages? Plan to test it but just asking in advance really.

You can check the VID of your chip by using coretemp, You can download the latest version below:

In my experience vdroop was the difference between the vcore i set in the bios and what is actually is when in windows idle and at load. For example if i wanted my voltage at 1.35 i would have to set my bios @ around 1.41875 then my vcore in windows at idle would be about 1.37 and 1.35 at load.but with the mod i can enter 1.35 and and it basically stays the same at all times i think also aids stability. Vdroop can vary with different boards though i think mine was pretty big.

There is a guide for overclocking an e6600 and 680i with bios screens for you to follow. It should all be the same except for the e6600 cpu voltage obviously. I would perhaps try at 1.40 first although some q6600 chips make it tp 3ghz on stock volts. Forgive me im just assuming you have little overclocking experience but correct me if im wrong. Good luck
