Q6600 or Penryn??

what about people like me, i want the fastest machine i can get for £500 (not upgrading yet....) and so maybe AMD will be the way to go, in the new year pound for pound they will have the fasted processors if intel realese penryn at a higher price....

not really because from what we've seen a q6600 is loads better than the POS that is Phenom.

Which is not good for anyone. There's already speculation that the lacklustre performance of Phenom will allow Intel to launch Penryn at higher prices than originally planned as people who want the performance will have no choice other than to pay their prices. This is the problem with competition, it's been driving down processor prices to unbelievably low levels over recent years (quad-cores for 160 quid!) but, now that AMD are "beaten" for the time being, Intel will want to get their prices back up as much as they can, firstly to recoup revenue lost during price cuts and secondly to establish a higher base ready for the next round of the war, whenever AMD gets its act together.

yeah that's what i'm worried about, amd are beaten obviously so i expect intel will increase prices of penyrn's. they will be too expensive to buy which will be disappointing as i would have to wait at least six months for prices to drop before i get one at decent price and that's until mid 2008

Looks like its going to be somwhere around 200ish

Cheers :D

I think I may go with the Q6600 for ~£160 then as cash is a little tight. If I can get a Q6600 to at least 3Ghz then I doubt if I would see much in the way of a real world difference, or am I missing the point?

im in the same boat, not sure whether to order a q6600 now or wait until till penryn (but i dont know how much they will cost??) and get one of them or see if the q6600 comes down in price when they get released....

I think there are a ot of us in the upgrade boat. I have £400 sat waiting. Now is it wait or buy.

Now a Q6600 clocked to 3Ghz + 4 gig DDR2 (good MB that will take new Quads).

Now thats going to be atleast the £400 gone. Sell all my old parts, to go toward a new 8800 GTS (new version).

I cant now get my money till jan/feb.

So Im stuck.

But if I didnt stick it in savings that is what I would do. (I game at 1920x1200).

Current Quads (Q6600) and a good graphics card will be good for atleast 1+years. Unless you want stupid FPS.

Hi - is there any news on Penryn costs yet?

If you are at 3.8ghz on a Q6600 you have to ask yourself is 200 mhz and less heat it worth it.

This is what im wondering. My chips prime happy at just over 3.9Ghz. Say I could get a Penryn to 3.7 it still would not be as quick as my Q6600 right??

Or am I missing something here?

3.7ghz penryn is like 4.1ghz Q6600

As the chips look FSB limited it looks like 3.6ghz is the highest they will go,
Unless you have a QX chip.
