QLED vs OLED

how can you even watch that tv? it's like a mirror i would constantly be distracted by the light and anything in the background. i even know exactly what you look like by the reflection
Think the main reason it reflects my light like that is due to the TV is mounted very high so the top of the TV is only 15 inches from the ceiling and the ceiling light is only 4 feet from the screen...

Most the time I no notice that light reflection at all when watching it ….(Guessing am used to it after having my TV's wall mounted in that spot for 12 years)

Amazing isn't it, you can indeed make out the poster as the blacks are so deep it's like a mirror. I guess on an LCD based screen the poster would be hidden by the Grey's.

In a dark room reflections aren't an issue so its a moot point lol
About 90% of my movie viewing is done in a dark room with all the lights turned off and my black out curtains closed

Always thought I was kind of strange for doing this :D as I never see other people do this

Why would anyone one want any distractions while watching Movies and good TV shows. It's the only way to watch good content.

You could always turn on all the lights on and use a phone for the duration.

Nope not strange at all, I have black out curtains and a hue setting called TV time that is a combination of low lit reds and blues which I find suits a good night in front of the TV.

that's how i watch. when i got my new OLED i kept the box and made big cardboard shields for the window to cut even more light.

so you're not a bias lighting evangelist ?

... from a few pages back
good job i have white BIAS lighting behind both my current tv's and i have also bought a third set from ikea for when my new tv arrives. only costs 15 quid too.

.... not sure how with those they anticipate the bright sections or, are they faster than the eye

they stay constantly on.

all the light is behind the screen. so it makes blacks blacker. reduces eye fatigue for when a screen goes from dark to bright to dark as there is always light present in the room.

it also mitigates reflections. as all light is behind the screen so more light behind it than in front of it.

the leds attach directly to the back of the tv. so none of the light can hit the front of the tv.

With the deals happening I am tempted by LG OLED's but with the burn-in issues people are talking about, should I still go for one or Samsung QLED?

What my TV will be used for,
XBox One X
PS4 Pro
HTPC for games and movies which has an Vega 64 GPU (Some 2018 Samsung QLED TV's now have Freesync via firmware update)

QLED /LED always the safest one to go for

I have an OLED and xbox one X & PS4 & HTPC but I only use my consoles & HTPC about once every 3 to 6 months as I mainly use my PC for gaming and the consoles are only for games that are not available on PC

Without knowing your true usage it impossible to say
As you could be playing a game that has a static image on screen for 5 hours per day for all we know

I got a LG OLED on Black Friday and am super happy with it. As for static images and burn, for me its just something to remember and I avoid keeping static images on the screen for a long time. The only time I see it being an issue is during gaming where there could be static items on the screen like a minimap or icons, but in most games these dissapear if you open the map, pause, go to options, etc, or you can just go to the console home screen, swap channel, etc to avoid burn.

I'm debating whether to upgrade my TV(Panasonic 58dx750b) I have been looking at LGs 65inch B8 but the possible image retention is worrying me slightly my main usage is gaming (Xb1 X) so think parts of the games HUDs will end up burning in eventually also finding myself watching a lot of twitch streams lately and wondering if anyone else watches twitch streams and could comment on if the box around the twitches camera burns in after watching for a hour or so.

Would Qled be the saftest bet? If so any recommendations on which to go for budget is around 2K

Bit over budget but if your paying 2k for a TV it worth paying that bit extra for the Samsung Q9

Someone else may know places that sell it cheaper or it may drop in price in the January sales.. ;)

EDIT Samsung QE65Q9FN & UBDM9000

Not sure if I can get the missus to allow a extra £400 it was a pain getting her to agree on getting a new TV, Although just seen on the Samsung website they are doing the same offer as richersounds with 0% that could soften the blow to her and not cause a a argument as I won't need the player either so can sell that on and buy her something with the money I get from that.

I game on an oled a lot. I have no issues with image retention. I don't understand why OLEDs and QLEDs are still being compared in the same bracket.

They both have there strengths and weaknesses
It all depends on the consumer needs.
Movies, SDR, Dark room = Oled wins
Gaming, HDR, Bright room= LED wins

DV and HDR on my OLED begs to differ :D and the brightness thing really isn't an issue. I've gamed for hours without issue as well. Nobody needs it brighter than you can obtain through any of the sets, certainly not store demo bright.

FYI I've been using OLED for 3 years now. My current is 65" C8. I think I know the tech.

I use it for everything including heavy gaming.
Only reason I picked the Oled again was for over all movie performance.

If it was for HDR and gaming and would have been a fullaray LED.

Alright petal, untwist your panties.

For me there is no comparison when it comes to the contrasts obtainable with the ink blacks in oled. The brighter argument is a non starter because nobody wants a retina burning display, it isn't comfortable. As for gaming, how is it any better? A console produced hdr screen is not going to look any different between the two.

HDR isn't better on the qled. It's the same format, anything other is just marketing dross.
