Quad Core PC Vs Xbox 360?

No, because it looks nicer. Why do you think consoles do HD now?

Actually, I bought mine for *drumrolls* the higher resolution. :o

Those figures are about double what they should be.

After these three points, I gave up. Your opening lines were just so inticing, then it went downhill.

Agreed

The xbox 360 is high definition. With the 360 you do not need a high resolution. At 1366 x 768 the picture on the 360 look amazing for a £250 console. The same price as most decent DX10 cards.

"High definition" by its very definition is a high resolution.

It just so happens that PCs can do a wider range of, and higher resolutions.

As for price, a £70 or less card can do 720p. :)

For now a £70 card could do 720p but with the new games it wont.

Yes it will because the user will simply turn the graphics down a bit, just like console devs.

They make shortcuts with console graphics to improve most of the image quality though, Halo 2 was a prime example on the original Xbox. It had all new effects and shiny new graphics, but to accomplish that they had to make all the textures "snap-in" at a LOD distance.

Oblivion is a more recent and cross-platform example, an X1950Pro can accomplish things in that game that simply aren't there on the Xbox 360 once you pile on AA/AF and graphics-enhancing mods.

PC graphics hardware is constantly being updated, which is why PC games have a much wider array of graphics options. Console games get optimised and have short-cuts taken until all of the hardware's potential is used up, at which point you get a new console.

Really it's no different and not more expensive, just has a different life-cycle.

To be honest guys 99% of the british public have probably never heard of Direct X 10, so i dont think theres going to be a revolution in people buying £300 cards and quad core CPUs. High end PC gaming is very much a niche market, but to be honest i like it that way, i guess you wouldnt feel so l337 if it wasnt would ya? :D

You get what you pay for and high-end PC gaming is for those who demand the best image quality etc.

You only need to spend £70 on a GPU that can best the Xbox 360 in terms of both raw performance and what can be done on-screen in similar resolutions, if you spend £200 you can get a GPU that does much more.

That's even before you take into account that console hardware sells at a loss, hence more expensive games.

You can bet dell and the people in purple shirts will push quads once they drop a bit all pc's are new dual core now.
x1950 for 70 is great value

Possibly, but youd have to do a lot of fiddling to get it to look as nice with most games on a £70 card.
Depends, I mean using Oblivion as the same example the X1950Pro is easily capable of doing 4xAA and 8x or 16x AF in that game maxed out or near maxed out, with mods too. That's far beyond what you get in the Xbox 360 version which uses 2x/4xAA and no AF.

Not forgetting of course that the X1950Pro can play that game, at those settings, in resolutions exceeding 720p.

no a x1950 is a good card for 70
I agree, in fact it's probably the best value for money card going.

It is great value. Anyway, ive debated enough in this thread. My final sentiment is, if you can afford a high end pc, you can afford both! :p
Then you dont miss out on the likes of mass effect, halo3, gtaIV etc etc etc etc

Some real passionate responses on this thread, feel a bit ashamed now for even considering the xbox 360! Think i'll save my money and wait till the 9800 nvidia cards come out!
Then no doubt a quad core pc with nvidia's next gen card will surely kick even a PS3's ass by then!!

My only problem with pc gaming (have never used consoles), is lazy ports from xbox/playstation to PC, and the unbelievable inefficient/unoptimised coding that many games have which kill the frame rate(some don't even look that good)
Also games released that feel almost unfinished with loads of bugs, waiting for patch after patch to fix these problems.
And why do some PC games have a 30 FPS cap? What is the benefit in that?
(overlord a good example, but was removed in the 1.2 patch, thankfully!)

Ok, who's idea was it to ask this question in PC Games? We may as well go to an Audi forum and ask 'Audi vs BMW'. :D

I started this debate.... sorry :D , i didn't have the intention of having a 'what's better' debate, just the relative power differences between the two!

I am definately a PC gamer, always will be, it's nice to see some console owners on here passionate about their thing too!

It is strange, I must admit. Like the chap a few posts up, I own a pretty decent PC yet I'm planning on picking up a 360 at some point. I guess I just want ease of use these days.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to tuck my shirt into my pants and go to the loo for the 11th time tonight. :D

Get what you can afford, the outlay from scratch will cost a bit if you want quad and a gtx+ videocard and nov new cards should be out from nvidia,360 is a good machine, but pc hardware moving quite fast at moment.

There are benefits to owning both, especially if you want a party gaming machine to play since PCs are insanely bad at such a role.
