quake 2 is 15 years old

I still remember trying everything to get over 30fps while benching Q2 with a voodoo1, 32mb ram, intel 200mmx cpu (Overclocked to 233mhz) :D

Hmm never got under 40fps on my old PC Pentium 1 166MMX, w/ 32MB RAM and a Voodoo 1 (was an obsidian board but still).

This is why I like Natural Selection 2.

No sign of an XP bar / unlocks / achievements just straight up gameplay.

I made a mod that put a lot of that into quake 2 :o (it was actually quite fun tho). Unfortunatly only video of it I have is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcFeLFaC8WA and not setup to build the source and make a video showing off the full features. (it had full RPG style xp/levelling/unlocks and classes).

Are these from quakeadelica held at The Playingfields London?
I was there, got a t-shirt also :)
(t-shirt was given to me at the wireplay club captains meeting held the week after at the playingfields)

I remember Equilibrium and Mr.S (was you in the clan Mistermen or?) :)
I was in the clan mistermen / Mortal Retribution
We even made it into PCGamer for an article on Quake3 :)

Nice video, Rroff. :)

I don't recall the chain gun dudes being nearly invincible. You pumped loads of shells into one of them in particular, but he still didn't drop.

Was more of a Quake fan than Q2, but certainly had some good times on it. Anyone else play Action Quake 2? Terrific mod with some great maps.

I changed them a lot in the mod - they had more health because it was designed for 4 player coop rather than single player and they had rudimentary group behavior where one would try and get in close and brawl (massive melee damage) and then the rest if one got in close would try to move away to the edge of the fight and use their chainguns (the AI was completely redone and instead of having static spawn points they would react to the players and spawn in groups in a similiar fashion to left 4 dead - if you were making too quick pace through the map you'd get a wave of AI spawn with the makeup of the spawned group(s) depending on how well you were doing).

Unfortunatly it was a pretty mammoth mod and by the time I had it in basic working shape and a couple of test maps most people had moved on from Quake 2.

Good work.

Thought about going down the indie route?

^^ I can't even count how many hours I played on the edge - nothing really comes close to that experience :( Still remember the first time I ever logged into a multiplayer game of Quake 2 and got railed over and over by the same guy with my 300ms ping then a couple of weeks later having tweaked my connection down to a little over 100ms and got a bit of practise in I ran intho him again and returned the favor.

Good work.

Thought about going down the indie route?

Don't really have the time for it these days.

EDIT: Just fired up Quake Live for the first time in awhile and noticed they've put out a map (mostly for freeze tag tho :S) called Winter's Edge based on the edge - might have to have a play.

ah q2, what a game, remember playing vs clans such as UNR, CoG & XTC

I remember there being a large influx of Swedish players due to them all being LPB, which being on 56k made it difficult to compete. Eventually switched over to play TFC as the scene dwindled out.

Good times

Quake 2 was my first proper fps with keyboard and mouse, my mate "Bobalob" used to play inverted so I did too lol, still do to this day. We used to play the edge all the time and action quake :D, moved onto UT after that.

Yeah was an amazing mod, kinda like a early CS, used to fall and break ya legs so had to bandage up to stop the bleeding. I just ran about getting owned most of the time lol

Yeah I remember playing with those clans :D Brings back memories! I formed one called RmR (mainly played Instagib and Rocket arena), we pretty much kept playing until the scene died. It was sad as I was still enjoying the game, but the Clanbase Cups eventually just stopped happening (which was the usual motivation every few months for everyone to keep playing competitively).

I am remembering the feeling of smug satisfaction you got by managing to trap someone in that tube thing which filled with lava when you closed the doors on it. That and the lttle tune it played when you managed to get the flag back to your base, it was like "That was me! I got the flag and made it play that tune!" Grapple hook fun was good too.

bah this thread is making me want to break out the mod source again :| was always something so fun and satisfying about modding quake 2 that I've never found with any other engine. (other than grappling with the tools for some of the more obscure elements like sprites and weapon/player animations).
