quake 2 is 15 years old

Used to love Quake 2. I hung around on the barrysworld servers and then played in the Savage CTF leagues in the late 90s.

Fantastic community back then.

loved quake 2, brings a tear to my eye :(. i have my origanal big box copy and on steam. think i must have to go relive the old quake 2 days.

Soldier of fortune 2 was wicked, shame about 3 (some people dont even know it came out).

I still remember trying everything to get over 30fps while benching Q2 with a voodoo1, 32mb ram, intel 200mmx cpu (Overclocked to 233mhz) :D

I was very fortunate that I had a mate who was fairly senior in the industry (he anded up going to nVidia as they launched the Riva TNT) and he had all the latest greatest hardware coming out of his ears and I used to get it all free! :)

I also had a nvidia TNT card which was after my voodoo2

My hardware was nowhere near free for me :(

15 years.

You had to be down with the brown i say:)

Realy is something when you post those youtube dm1 videos, nothing today matches up with the skill level required to pull and play those moves... advantages like that now have been replaced by xp grinds and buy it now mechanics/

Ode to the best of them, on a personal level, 4v4 tatical level takedowns on multiplay masterpeices like dm2.

Qpong.... Brilliant mod for the few that played it.

I never really played quake 2, more of a doom 2 / q1 gamer, then went onto delta force adn unreal tournament.

What happened to these style of games? Why did the COD's et al take over??

As someone else has mentioned - games are all about clean kill graphics, xp and buying ****.. Quake you needed skill to get to certain items and the tactics were more profound than anything else.

the new fps games just dont appeal to me the unlock/perk/class/etc is not what I want. I want tactical weapon usage timed armour runs and dominating a map with the above skills I never minded being beaten as you knew it was down to skill and not how many hours you can play or how much you can spend to buy better stuff!

nice. Does anybody still play SOF2 anymore?

Just fired it up now. Found about 50 servers instantly, about 10 of which had quite a few people in.

I played for 30 minutes without realising on MP Finca CTF. I think games have become worse as graphics has become better. After 2 minutes I forgot I was playing in 1600x1200 on a 2560x1440 monitor and had low settings too.

Level design, simplicity and general fun is what games should always be about. Not just graphics

For me the only game that managed both really well was Battlefield 2. Time to re-install it I think

Another game that is still full of people playing is MOHAA
