quake 2 is 15 years old

So now that all of you fellow Quake 2 players of old have come out of hiding, what do you guys play nowadays? I have a hard time finding newer games that satisfy my railgun itch! While I occasionally pop onto Quake Live instagib servers to "p0wn some nubs" there's no other game like it really :( UT3 was a bit of a flop, Nexuiz seems to be devoid of players, Quake Live refuse to track any instagib stats (+ no modding etc). I generally have to make do with sniping in games like Planetside 2, BF3 etc! Not quite the same level of satisfaction though.

Yeah lithium was good, especially as I generally preferred FFA on public servers as opposed to team games :) Jailbreak was great, though I seem to remember the community for that one died out before too long :(

Hmm never got under 40fps on my old PC Pentium 1 166MMX, w/ 32MB RAM and a Voodoo 1 (was an obsidian board but still).

I made a mod that put a lot of that into quake 2 :o (it was actually quite fun tho). Unfortunatly only video of it I have is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcFeLFaC8WA and not setup to build the source and make a video showing off the full features. (it had full RPG style xp/levelling/unlocks and classes).

I don't mind unlocks, xp and achievements but I feel games don't need them, they only work if implemented correctly, black ops 1 is a good example cause you used coins to unlock stuff. Then I feel achievements should be fun, something you normally wouldn't do, like play in a certain way etc that's when they add to game replayability.

Was your mod singleplayer or MP?

For me Quakeworld (Q1) was the ground breaking moment, but my best times were spent playing Q2 LMCTF (Lokis Minions). The grappling hook brought a whole new dimension to the game.

You must have been using very low settings/lower res or something...

Even reviewers were getting under 30fps
In 3Dfx mode I achieved 26.5 fps (frames per second) while running full screen and 42.67 fps after shrinking the play window to half size. In non-accelerated mode I achieved only 9.9 fps while running at 800×600 resolution full screen and 15.2 fps after shrinking the window. This improved a bit at 640×480 resolution with a 13.74 fps full screen and

I used to play on Barrysworld Server Minos or another thing I liked to play was FreezeTag =]
I normaly play as Vorlon if DMing or sometimes are CS^DG

So much nostalgia...was anyone in Suicide Squad? They had an awesome academy with different squads that trained in an internal league. I was in SiN and HooD as well. UNR were always the kings though. IRC #quake2.uk I think was the main chat for the scene as well back then.

I remember HooD, mainly RipRock as he played KOTS and Instagib sometimes which were the main things I played. :)

Seems a bit low - I was playing at 640x480 with all setting maxed and getting 42.x fps in demo1 - granted I had one of the voodoo 1s with the additional TMU but still I definitely wasn't struggling to hit 30fps.

I Have some good old games from leagues I post some times on my you tube I still like to watch them now and then

I don't play in any of them but I found them on a cd which was in a pile of cds and wanted to let people see what quake 2 was about I got about 100 of them to do with only about 10 up atm :)

Nice. Takes me back :)

What software are you using to record the videos? I've got a few Savage League Q2CTF games in dm2 format archived on CDs. I should really get them on youtube before the CDs start to fail - they must be over 10 years old now.

with quake 2 fraps works well then encode with a video editor to mp4
but i'm using a modded quake2 which lets me use 1920x1080 :)

QUake2....One of the greatest online games ever. They even made a jump mod which shows how versatile the engine was.

I remember the clans CoG (I was in this when it first started), MR, RsF, Hood, ^V^, LL, DFA, UNR...Those were they days.

Anyone who played duel on DM1 would know where the other player was just from the sound effects of various weapons/armour. Getting the railgun was always close, but once you had it, there was a big advantage. I remember also losing the railgun after being on top and then it all switched around.

Remake!
