Yep, the league server (barry.barrysworld.com, I can still remember the hostname...) turned into big game server at midnight, we used to play until it rebooted at 6am :)

Last night a mate and i played quake, was great fun, ended up completing it on co-op.. Decided to make our way through the series... What on earth happened with q2 - its, awful?! Nowhere near as dark?! Smoothed surfaces, feels clunky and slow?! Also read up a bit and realised that ID was bought out -by zenimax... Such a shame that all these decent devs get bought out by companys that churn out generic ___t!

SO if you all stopped playing quake/3 arena - what did you move onto?

Also, what method is used in the construction of the models in quake, its not sprites is it? is it early polygon modelling?

Quake is the only game I have completed three times, once without using the mouse!

nothing really ever replaced quake3 for me I went on to play moh, cod,CSS etc but I have gone back to quake and quake3 recently and still enjoy that gameplay more than the reward based fps they have now

So true, there is quake4, but it is not the same really. That last weapon you get is just stupid

You can bind "impulse 10" and "impulse 12" for prev/next weapon, but QW has instant weapon switching so most people use some kind of weapon script to select. E.g. assuming using ezQuake client "impulse 8 3 5 2 4 1" will choose whichever of those weapons comes first that you have with ammo.

It is a odd sit. whatever keys I bind stop working, maybe I am not doing something right? The numbers seem to work fine for switching, but that is kind of not good for fast switching with the way I play. I there a way to tie keys to # going up & # going down? Be awesome if the mods I played back then were still active, I love Weapons of Destruction. Does ezquake go ontop of nquake, or is it a standalone?

ezQuake comes with nQuake but it can be run standalone. Basically:

ezQuake = the modern client application used by most for multiplayer
nQuake = a 'complete' package that was put together to make it easier for new players i.e. ezQuake plus a bunch of extras like maps, enhanced visuals, better default settings and so forth.

Regarding the weapon binds you may have been right about a mod interfering, but in theory if you bind it in the menu it should work. Or you can manually bind it via console:
bind mwheeldown "impulse 10"
bind mwheelup "impulse 12"

One thing to bear in mind is I am not sure if key bindings are saved by default, again if you go to the "config" menu you can force a save there or "cfg_save" in the console.
Finally one point is Quake can be a bit weird about configs in relation to mods e.g. if you save a cfg it may only save for that mod, but again in the config menu there is a setting to control whether you save to mod directory or to profile dir.

To answer the above question, Quake uses polygons whereas Doom/Doom2 used sprites. Easy way to check whether an object is a sprite I find is to circle-strafe round it - if it looks the same from all sides, it is probably a sprite.

Yep, Q4 had a crap last weapon. Like a tiny dragon spitting fire at the other person. Q3 has http://www.openarena.ws/smfnews.php (Opensource not warez) it is a free. Not great, but free.
