Queen Elizabeth II has passed away - keep posts civil and respectful

Hidden among the throng, David Beckham waited for more than 13 hours to pay his respects to the Queen yesterday despite being offered the chance to jump the queue by an MP.

Dressed in a suit that hid his famous tattoos, a cap and a Covid mask, the former England captain, 47, joined mourners in the ‘Elizabeth line’ at 2am, going unnoticed by the masses for hours as he shuffled his way from Southwark Park to Westminster Hall.

Along with those around him, who helped keep his secret initially, Beckham said he survived on the very unfootballer-like diet of ‘Pringles, sherbet lemons, sandwiches, coffee and doughnuts’.

‘We all want to be here together. We all want to experience something where we celebrate the amazing life of our Queen and I think something like this today is meant to be shared together,’ he told BBC News.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder saw his cover finally blown shortly after midday, with members of the public taking to social media to share the news he was there.

The Daily Mail can reveal Beckham had been invited to view Her Majesty’s coffin by an MP, who is allowed to take up to four guests, to jump the queue. But he declined the offer, saying that his grandfather Joseph West – a staunch royalist and the man the footballer has called his ‘real-life hero’ – would have been disappointed.

It is at things like this you see the real class in people. Beckham is unbelievably rich yet he has done the right thing. Then you have these two.

Old lady with a genetic link to middle age rulers has died, weeks later we are still mourning her?

I'm utterly ambivalent to the monarchy, however the constant bombardment of this story is getting irritating. Netflix has even recommended something to do with this.

Less than 10 full days have gone by since Her Majesty died.

Anyone heading to London for the funeral?
I think the scrum getting in and out of London will make life very challenging. But as someone who attended Diana's funeral, and was present for that sweeping "wave" of applause, I'll say there are some experiences you'll never get in any other way, and are worth the considerable hassle. There may be no similar moment for ERII, but there will be a celebratory element to the service, I'm sure, and spontaneous appreciation may break out anyway. Such things have to be felt to be believed. Telly can't do them justice.

Then ignore it and done engage in it.

If you can't skip through something on a TV app you don't like without getting irritated you have bigger problems going on :p

I mean other than checking a few bits of key news and videos I have not been bombarded with anything. Its pretty easy to avoid.

Although I tend to agreee somewhat, they are a relic of a time long gone, just ignore it instead of getting anoyyed by it.

The older you get, the more you realise we're all a relic of time long ago. Sometimes "long ago" just means forty years, when the world felt like a totally different place.

I started off life as a total lefty Republican #RightOn. But that thing about getting more conservative (small c) and reflective as you get older seems to be an almost inevitable part of ageing. I'm 59 and have memories stretching back well over 50 years. It only takes 20 of those to get you back to Jesus Christ (allegedly) and the height of the Roman Empire (rather less allegedly).

I still get a bit intellectually dizzy if I think about that too hard... it's kind of the opposite effect to when you spend too long staring at the stars and a sense of the vastness of it all overwhelms you. Well, me anyway.

I am half tempted but think I will see far more on TV.
Friend took his kids to Buckingham Palace to pay their respects yesterday. Said everywhere was mobbed, took 3 hours just to walk past the gates. Will be worse on Monday, unless you camp out early you probably won’t see anything.

Yet you still seek the sole post on an entire forum that fuels your resentment. Go outside and have a walk.

I was pondering about just being by the route/feeling the atmosphere...i guess i can re watch on iPlayer.

I was at the Palace too around 2-4ish. Wasn't too bad as it was a one way system.

50/50 at the moment hmm.

If it’s just for the atmosphere and to just be there the go for it. Transport will be a nightmare after but if ur willing to hang around and travel later it shouldn’t be that bad.

That was such a good series, and so applicable to many young people these days still :)

I'm more curious than resentful, is it the media stirring emotions due to their unrelenting coverage or are people genuinely upset. You are right through, no reason for me to post on this topic again.

Then you have these two.

They were there as press not jumping the queue:

“They did not jump the queue, have VIP access or file past the Queen lying in state – but instead were there in a professional capacity as part of the world’s media to report on the event,” the statement added.

In a separate statement to The Independent, an ITV spokesperson said: “This Morning had press accreditation and like other media, Phillip and Holly were escorted to work from the press gallery by government staff. They did not file past the Queen’s coffin.

“They were there alongside a host of other broadcasters and national press outlets for an item that will be broadcast on Tuesday’s show. Any allegations of improper behaviour are categorically untrue.”

Also, anyone criticising someone else for wearing a mask is a frickin' moron.
