Queen Elizabeth II has passed away - keep posts civil and respectful

Watching the Accession Council, all seems totally pointless - a ceremony for a different age when we didn't have social media, the internet and 24/7 news - we all know he's the King!
Honestly some of the ceremony and procedure in this country really needs to be modernised.

Absolutely agree with this and think the same applies to parliament too.

It's not about forgetting the past or tradition, just bringing the more archaic parts up to date to be relevant to the modern society. Hell, it's what the Queen herself was very aware about and kept evolving and modernising the royal family over the decades.

Are neither Charles nor Camilla allowed to wear any Crown Jewels headgear until they've been crowned at the coronation? I was sort of expecting them to wear something at the Accessional Council and this morning at Westminster Hall but no.

and not one who will be for 70 years. To think we might never have another platinum jubilee.
Chances are with people living longer, it will never happen again. Even a gold jubilee is highly unlikely. We might not even see a silver jubilee in most peoples lifetime now.

Elizabeth became queen at 25. Even if King Charles only lived a week, William is already 40 years old so would have to live to 110 for a platinum jubilee.

Yeah have him proclaimed king on TikTok and Instagram! That'll work going ahead in the centuries to come! Theres a reason things are done the way they are it gives a sense of solidity and continuity and most of whats current now will be obsolete in a generation's time. Tried and tested etc.

Watching the ceremony on BBC at the moment. Charles looks a bit bored.

Yeah if something like that happens again it can't be predicted. Like the Queen's circumstances, it will be due to an unplanned event like an early death or abdication.

Its 50/50 whether we will get another Queen for 150 years. Charles --> William --> George --> Georges son or daughter.

I think I prefer Queens to Kings - seems likely that a softer female figure would be more accepted by other cultures which is how the Queen got so well liked across the world.

can't sit in throne either, I guess, from yesterday's signing.

don't forget Prince Charles had begun his public duty in 1969 Prince of Wales, age of 20 - 53yr, so far at age of 73, so can be longest serving royal

we'll get to a see a political comment on the Kings diet, and who he thinks has a credible green policy.
Many retailers hold a Royal Warrant, including Waitrose, Selfridges and Fortnum & Mason, with FMCG giants such as Heinz, Cadbury, Coca-Cola, Premier Foods, Unilever, British Sugar and Britvic also on the list.

Around 30 Royal Warrants are typically granted each year, with a similar number being terminated.

It is understood these companies have to reapply for a Royal Warrant from the new monarch, and prove they supply “products or services on a regular and on-going basis to the Royal Households of grantor/s for not less than five years out of the past seven.”

“Amongst other things, applicants are also required to demonstrate that they have an appropriate environmental and sustainability policy and action plan,” The Royal Warrant Holders Association added.

Although not for another 3 years as even if Charles drops somebody straight away they will still have a Royal Warrant for another 3 years if they have supplied the Queen for the last 5 years solidly.

The seats that they are sitting on don't look very comfortable!

Probably hurting his back!

I'd hope in the next 150 years we manage to ditch this hereditary stuff anyway. Its archaic and belongs in the past.

I agree with parliament needing an update... but in general, the only reason i personally would keep the monarchy is due to the tradition and the amount of money it brings into the country because of it. part of the interest paid by would be tourists IS the archaic pomp and ceremony. lose that and may as well just drop the monarchy entirely imo.

At the moment due to the crisis the country is facing i am hesitant at the amount on money likely being spend on all the ceremony.... OTOH perhaps it is an investment and will over all pay dividends. there will be many many millions watching all this going on right now so perhaps it is value for money.

Anyone else getting a poor quality stream on iPlayer? Using that to watch some of the coverage and the resolution is really rather poor, 960x540 by the looks.

Guessing Queen had a stroke in the night
IDK what you're basing that on but i had guessed it was something doctors were already treating due to the bruising on the back of her hand, something I've often seen in the elderly when they've had a cannula fitted.

I'm not ruling out a stroke but i would've thought dying from one when you're probably being monitored by doctors would be unusual.

Yea, because political appointees are doing a much better job of things, ain't they.

But at least with a democratic vote we'd be safe with the knowledge that whichever jobsworth finds themselves in a position of power, good or bad, is down to the people. We'd only have ourselves to blame/thank and even then in most cases it would only be 8 years. I'd much rather that system than one where it's just forced upon you and you have to accept it for what it is.

These last few days have been wild to me. The enforced mourning trickling into avenues of daily life which it shouldn't effect, the cancelling of some sporting events really wound me up. Hearing presenters put on a sombre front or only allowed to play melancholy music for X amount of days. It's all just a bit 'Dear Leader' for me.
