Quest 3 preview

Looks great at first impressions. Don't think I'll go for one for a while as the Pro does have some definite advantages. Looks like Q3 is best for standalone, but Pro for PCVR.

Besides, add a better back strap, Pro controllers and a charging dock and it's approaching or even exceeding Pro price which includes all those.
For the 512gb version? Is the standard strap that bad?
Norm of Tested said the default strap wasn't comfy for him.

In terms of raw performance, according to my Googling, moving from the the Snapdragon 835 in the Quest to the XR2 in the Quest 2 was a 2x performance jump, with the XR2 Gen 2 or whatever the official wording is being a 2.5x jump. I'm sure the specifics will be much more nuanced but that's what I could find.

Talk to me about the meta quest + subscription. You get 2 games each month right? - do you get to keep them forever or only whilst you subscribe to meta quest+?? Have they had good games in the past?

I can understand the chip performance being twice as fast but I wonder how much the quality/clarity of the visuals are an improvement. Going from a rift to a quest 2 was a massive difference. Perhaps upgrading every other gen would see a more marked wow factor of the graphics.

Good to see Meta offering up prescription lense inserts themselves and at a very reasonable price.

Will wait for you lot to beta test but looking like this could be my next headset for sim racing :p :D
Just ordered those lens inserts, £74 all in, delivery by the 10th it said.

Pre ordered the 512, not liking the look of that strap it looks too similar to the Q2 one which was hot garbage. Hope a Kiwi one comes out before the 10th!
I liked the Q2 strap, :p also like the fact you can lie down with it on. Glad the Q3 has the same.

Kind of feeling it would make more sense to wait until after launch to order as I'd like to see what 3rd party straps are available since the OEM ones are so expensive and not great quality given my experience of the Quest 2 one. Plus I'll need prescription lens inserts which also likely wont be avilalable until November anyway as wearing glasses in any VR headset is horrible.
As mentioned by others, Zenni optical have official prescription lenses for $49 up for pre-order, no idea if they ship to the uk etc, but seems very cheap.

Those $49 Zenni lenses are advertised directly on Meta's website, when you add tax and shipping they come to £74, i ordered them earlier.

10% voucher for the ***** - but it means you could get the Elite Strsp for Free or neatly free.
This seems like a bargain (you might get told off for linking to competitors), i wonder how easy returns are with them and when will they ship it?

Shame my wonky eyes are just outside their top SPH values (+6.5 / +6.25 for me!) but will try with glasses/contacts and see how I get on.

I quoted him, so have starred that out! good spot!

I've bought other stuff from them and they are no worse than buying direct in terms of support, they are quite a large outfit.. I've had issues with PC components and Phone , both returned within warranty period with no drama..

Delivery wise, yeah, might be a slight delay, Phones have always been super quick, next day.. PC components on standard delivery have been 2-3 days, but next day using express..

Wow deals already. Very different market to 2020. I wonder if it's best to hold fire and see if any more deals come about.

Does anyone have any clues about how the AV1 encoding might improve pcvr?

Usually better quality at same bitrate, or same quality at smaller bitrate. New codecs usually put a greater demand on the encoding/decoding machine so your gpu and the headsets soc, so question mark over latency. Not network latency, that should improve, but overall latency I expect will go up. Just have to wait and see. The 4090 cards have very good AV1 encoders onboard, so should be pretty good that side.

:edit: ok, as I thought...... Bandwidth is reduced by around 30% at the expense of higher encode/decode times. Now, the xr2gen2 is faster than the xr2 so will be very interesting to see if it's faster at decoding av1 than the xr2 is at hevc/h264

  • The AV1 codec is one of the slowest in terms of encoding/decoding efficiencies and performance speed.

I think we're going to have to wait until customers get the headsets and try it for themselves.
