Quest 3 preview

I've tried contact lenses and I loved them. However I have dry eyes and my eyes didn't get on with them so I had to stop using them. So not an option for me I'm afraid.

Has anyone seen any information on AV1 codec on Quest 3? I'm aware of the computational requirements of AV1 being significantly higher than H265, but I haven't seen any benchmarking of the decode speed on XR2 Gen2.

It looks like the throughput of both AMD 7000 and NV 4000 AV1 encoders is very good, better than H264 and H265. But throughput is not the same as latency, nor can I find anything on the latency to decode on the Q3. Interesting to note the AMD AV1 encoder has higher FPS than NV...

I think we're just going to have to wait and see to be honest, I know I've read that Guy Godin (virtual desktop) has spoken about it, and whilst I don't remember exactly what was said, I don't think he was too excited? The chip power alone could easily mean that all decoding is much improved.

@Ravenger

If the quest 3 lenses are the same shape etc as the pro , know anywhere I can get some cheap lens protectors while I wait for my prescription lenses to arrive?
if it is anything like my rift, my quest 2 or my reverb G2 the quest 3 will arrive with removeable clear thin plastic strips on the lenses.

if i were you i would just keep those on it whilst you wait, you can use the headset with them on just fine.

i havent seen an unboxing of the Q3 however so i apologise if it is not the case.

I'm not sure they are the same size, just hoping they are! However the Pro doesn't really need lens protectors as the lenses are surrounded by a soft rubber raised edge. Not sure if the Q3 is the same. We'll find out soon enough.

Was using my quest 2 the other day and I’m contemplating cancelling my Elite Strap order for the Quest 3 and holding out for a 3rd Party option.

The elite strap on the Quest 2 was never particularly comfortable and I’m hesitant to drop £70 on something I’ll probably want to replace if the previous one is anything to go by!

Anyone else any thoughts on what to do about the head strap situation?

is there a discount in getting on launch? if not surely its better to hold out and see what the options are? even more so given the awful state of the original official elite quest 2 strap.

the quest 3 one may not be great but its surely tolerable for a few months whilst you wait and see what options there are?

As for contacts........ i am getting to an age soon where single vision lenses will no longer be enough for me........ at that point however i will likely still get contact lenses just for VR. i have tried glasses in various vr headsets and mine have never fit.
mind you i have a big head and whilst my specs are not Dennis Taylor specials.......... equally harry potter specs wont work for me either. I may consider vr lenses but i like to get my eyes almost touching the screen to get every drop of field of view out of my headset

Yeah, I’m coming round to that way of thinking and as you say no real advantage to ordering it day one.

Yeah I'm waiting too. The one I picked up for the Quest 2 was perfect and half the price of the elite strap.

What brand/model was it if you don’t mind me asking?

I never really looked at 3rd party straps for the Quest 2 having owned the Oculus elite strap from day one.

Are there any brands folk on here would recommend they’ve used on the Quest 2 that have a Quest 3 variant in the works?

Prescription headset lenses are the best option, as they also act as lens protectors.

As current VR headsets are fixed focal distance you only need your distance prescription, even if you need varifocals or separate glasses for distance and near vision.

It was an Eyglo one I picked up from the rainforest place. No idea if there's a Q3 variant in the works though.

this isnt mine............... as i was too tight to pony up the cash but i have tried one and regret not getting it.

(its also insanely cheap now, damn shame meta chose to change the design such that it wont work on the Q3. am almost certain they will do a Q3 one however
Bobo are planning on doing conversion kits for the M2 straps, maybe the M1 too if you're lucky.

I'm waiting on Kiwi Design to bring one out as a few youtube videos demonstrated it as a favourite for the quest2. Also Bobo.

Makes sense, will wait for release day reviews and the usual 200 half baked Reddit threads.

Have seen a few 6000 series "deals" coming up, but waiting to find out more about AV1 before buying last gen. Would love a 4090, but **** they're pricey.
