Question for [TW]Fox

I never post about my 205 GTI problems on here, I use the 205 GTI forum. Right now my window wipers embarrassingly don't work, either because of the motor or a relay, but I haven't told anyone on here because there's more chance of a good answer from the experts on there.

However, if anyone knows whether relays for a 205 GTI are a Peugeot only part or not, it'd be a help. :)

Can I just get some WTF to go with this thread?

A couple of points for you:

a) I have never, ever, ever said that E39's are reliable cars. Infact if you do some more ridiculously pointless stalking you will find NUMEROUS examples of me saying things like:

'They are not that reliable'
'They are very expensive to fix'
'I doubt the E39 will be anything like as reliable as my Mondeo'

and so on. I have NEVER waxed lyrical about E39 reliability, only Mondeo reliability. Mondeos are very reliable cars, E39's are not.

b) Why would I post on here for opinions regarding a specific issue when I am a member of a one-make specific forum where other people probably know a tad better?

c) What actually happened is that I had a 'Mr Fussy' session and went over the entire car with a fine toothcombe and reported a bunch of completely irrelevent, anally retentive issues which most people wouldn't even notice with the intention of getting as much stuffed replaced free of charge under warranty as I possibly could.

The gearbox is slighty stiffer moving into 5th than it is into the rest of the gears. I had to double check twice that it was actually like that, and when I mentionde it to the dealer the first thing they said was 'new transmission'. Why wouldnt they - BMW would pay for it.

So, I'm getting approximately £3000 worth of work done on my £7k E39 at zero cost to me, and I get to spend 2-3 days driving around in a brand new 320D Sport, at no cost to me. I'm also getting a brand new, BMW clutch fitted by the main dealer for just 200 quid, with no labour charge.

What exactly is the problem here? Where is the 'old banger' 'unreliable' high mileage car? There are people on that forum with EXACTLY the same issue on cars with as little as 40k miles. PMKeates on THIS VERY forum was telling me yesterday how he is investigating replacement on his 70,000 mile car - HALF my mileage.

As for the Propshaft - stuff happens. I remain to be convinced it actually needs a new one, most of the people I have spoken to reckon it's simply a bearing or a CV joint. Hardly the end of the world.

This thread would have been completely justified had I spent all my time posting about how amazingly reliable BMW's are and how they never break down.

I have NEVER, EVER said this.

Someone has bought a lemon :p

High mileage cars aren't really a problem as long as you check everything thoroughly and make sure everything has been changed when it should have been. I wouldn't buy a 140k mile car no matter how well it had been looked after purely because of how many people it puts off when it comes to resale. Surely on a test drive it would have been obvious the clutch wasn't the best?

Did he? I thought he said 140k miles was nothing for a BMW. I must be getting confused :)

It is. It still feels like a brand new car inside and out. It's just like a 40k BMW - we had plenty fixed on our 40k BMW under warranty as well :p

The clutch is fine. There is no problem with it. But as I intend to keep the car for 5 years or so it is clear that one day, it will need replacement.

So why not replace it now, for nil labour cost, whilst the gearbox is out?

I think its a case of, the clutch isn't bad, but the gearbox is coming out....so why not put a new one in at the same time, save yourself some money in the future!

This thread is pointless to the extreme mind you.

*Foxter beat me to it :p *

heh nice comeback fox :D

just to back his point up somemore, Its now confirmed I need a new radiator thermostat and expansion tank :( and mine is only just passed 84,000

I bet 50% of the cars on this forum have a less than as-it-left-the-factory gearbox. The gearbox works just fine, but as it wasn't factory perfect, its warrantably. I'd have been daft not to :p

I'd get the shaft checked by a specialist, chances are it's not what BMW think it is. I have a URL somewhere with BMW specialist reviews if you are interested. Last time my car was in BMW the foetus 'mechanic' said that my rear suspension was 'screwed' and quoted me for virtually all of it to be replaced (not under warranty as it was all classed as wear and tear). Specialist got it up on the ramps and the only actual fault was a snapped ARB bracket (happens a lot on E39s).

In my experience I woudln't believe a BMW 'mechanic' if they said the sky was blue.. especially if it wasn't a warranty item.

LOL @ this thread.

I'm a bit worried when my warranty on my 325Ci runs out in Feb, will see about extending it. In 8 months of ownership I've had to get the car taken in for:

Door seal split and dropped down (a £250 job not covered by warranty without a lot of arguing)
Door handle stiff
Door handle not working at all
Window mechanism not smooth
Battery going flat - resistor in climate control changed
Rear window replaced as aerial would cut out when heated screen on (this took so long I didn't have my car for 5 days!)

criky a lot of animosity around here, i dont think it was intended to have a go at fox just a bit of pokey fun, or has the motors forum finally succumbed and become a communist state like the rest of the forums?

Thats the way I saw it too and I actually know dandle in real life.

Just FYI, my propshaft donut is getting replaced in a few weeks time. I think the sympotns are a 'clunk' when the clutch engages.
