I bet 50% of the cars on this forum have a less than as-it-left-the-factory gearbox. The gearbox works just fine, but as it wasn't factory perfect, its warrantably. I'd have been daft not to :p

Try jamming it into second by accident going 60 up a country lane :)

Mine certainly feels slightly grindy in second and its only done a bit under 60k, so You're definately right on that one.

It looks like certain people wanted to see a fall, which I think is quite pathetic.

All cars have problems, me and fox have had several heated discussions in the past but i would never think that he was trying to hide something about his BMW by asking about it on a BMW forum!

Jeez, i like my old VWs but if i have a question i usually go to a forum designed and visited by other VW owners, as they have more knowledge and experience of the vehicles and problems they have.

Why do you think I hope it gets sub 200bhp on the rollers next week :p
what would fall under a reasonable loss in power though?
engines lose a little power with mileage as obviously some of the internals wear.
if your car left the factory with 231bhp then i'd have expected it to have lost a few of them after 70k miles never mind 140kmiles.
surely there must be a line in the sand to cross here as otherwise BMW would be doing engin work/replacement on every single warranty car that had dropped 1bhp

What I mean is that it would show up any VANOS problems - if it's circa 30bhp down on power, there is a VANOS issue.

it's my opinion that the higher end cars available today are just too complicated.
the amount of tech crammed in them is amazing, but the list of failures is never ending.
can you imagine what resale values of the current M5 and it's kin will be like when they're 10yrs old and out of warranty?
people will be frightened to buy them, and rightly so.

True I would not ask anyone on here about my car problems, I would use the one I and probably MNutz uses.
Although Fox, seeing as he IS the motors forum here and drives a common car that many of the fellow OcUKers on this forum drive should maybe have swallowed some pride and asked or shared his experience with the people on here aswell.

Pretty much, look at the current batch of 10 year old M5's on trader. £10k will now get you one! Crazy stuff.

Nobody else on this forum has a 530i?

lol at this thread, I wouldn't ask any specific CTR questions on here, thats what car specific forums are for:p

Went back down to the dealer this morning to query what exactly is up with the Propshaft, turns out they think its the bearing but 'recommend replacement of the entire unit' as a matter of course.

A local indy can replace the bearing for a nominal amount.

They had another 530i Sport E39 on the forecourt for £18995 with 20k on it. I so wish I'd bought that instead for an extra £12k. Not.

to be honest mate i think it'll be the equivalent of even less, as the current M5 is so much more complex than the model it replaces.

Cant bloody wait :D

Warranties for the win! :D

Its good to get as many fresh parts in there as you can before it runs out. Shouldnt need anything major once you have all this done. The peace of mind is worth it alone imho.

oh PLEASE.
nobody IS the motors forum.
Fox has a considerable wealth of knowledge relating to cars but i'm sure he will admit that while his knowledge base is pretty darn big, there are equally large gaps in that knowledge.
there are many other members far less vocal than Fox and myself that are knowledgeable and experienced in other aspects of being a petrolhead.

I can't believe I've just read three pages of this.. whatever this is - public trial, move for impeachement of some kind?
What on earth is going on - a guy from internet forum bought some old car, car needed some work - why is him not "reporting" it on this forum suddenly a story of News Of The World proportions? With 4 pages of slagging attached to it. This is motoring forum. On the internet. I understand people have this obsession with electing pseudo celebrities these days and freaking out about them and following them everywhere and all that - but this is taking it slightly to far, don't you think? He doesn't have a contract to confess all he does all the time here. He doesn't have to tell you lot jack es. Really.

Oh, I get it. Is today like April fools in chinese calendar or something? Is Fox being punked? Is there Ashton Kutcher or Jeremy Beaddle hidden somewhere behind a button on the page? Do we start laughing on queue now? Nyahaha. Now? Nyahaha.

Perhaps motoring section needs stiffer moderating or people will start leaving this forum quickly.

the thing with resale values is they are affected by actual facts and public perceptions of those facts.
look how long it's taken Skoda to lose the "but they're crap" stigma.
i think the depreciation curves of vehicles like this, the A8 and others will be almost vertical once you've dropped to the £10k and less bracket as without a warranty people will just be terrified to buy one.

it's comparable to the Shaken in Japan.
once the vehicles value has dropped to a low enough level, the relatively large warranty cost becomes unwarrantable.
