Question/request for all you folk with trip computers

My Focus XR5 (ST3 for you guys) has done 12,000km's

Manufacturer says it should run at 7.1L/100km

It's currently on 12L/100km :eek:


It's a combination of my heavy right foot and Ford being lying $%^#(&*^

There is no way in hell it would ever run at 7.1L/100km unless maybe you removed the turbo.

VW State i should get
Town mpg 26.2
Out of Town mpg 44.8
Average mpg 35.8

What i accualy get
Town mpg 24 (work and back i get about 18mpg however its 3 miles and a little twisty back road)
Out of Town mpg 37.5 (400 mile round trup on saturday)
 
Ford state I should get 36mpg from my 2.5TD scorpio estate.
I've been getting around the 35mpg mark from it. Not bad seeing as it's 11 years old & has 200,000 miles on it :D
 
I currently have a '96 328i SE Auto, Parkers - http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/specs/Detail.aspx?deriv=10181 - Quote 27MPG for the 328i Auto. I could not be bothered (given its 4:30AM!) to find the official BMW figures (Fox!!) but I imagine Parkers are not too far from the ballpark.... ?

My OBC has two settings, Cons(umption) 1 & Cons 2. Cons 1 I reset from time to time and it is currently showing 29.4MPG.

Given the above, my 2.8i Auto is remarkable, or that Mini is knackered (I fear the latter!) :D

I have not reset Cons 2 since I bought the car back in March and it is currently displaying 27.4 MPG so I'm above the quoted MPG albeit slightly.

Overall, I'm happy with the economy given how I tend to drive it! :)

That's very low. I take it you have been ragging it? My mum's get's well over 30 even when being ragged.

Not really, its pretty slow though so you end up with your foot to the floor going nowhere half the time plus its all around town. This is the one issue I tend to have with underpowered cars - in something like your Z4, every mm of pedal travel gains an instant response from the engine. You end up being very careful with the throttle simply because if you are not, you'll be doing warp speed, or in the verge, or whatever. With super slow cars you often get little or no response from the engine when you press the pedal if you know what I mean?

All this really means is that you are driving the car outside its intended use, you are causing the excess fuel consumption. If you drive the 1.4 to its expected use then you will get a much better, more economic outcome.

If you drive the 1.4 and expect the same response and acceleration to your "beast" of a car then why do you expect good fuel economy.

Apply a little throttle and you'll think 'I need abit more acceleration' so you apply more, but the problem is that acceleration never arrives so you end up appyling more throttle for no gain. Yesterday a diesel Zafira pulled away and I couldnt keep up :confused:
 
Cars have different operating environments. Some are more economical betweeen 3-4k revs for example and are less economical below or above that threshold. This changes from car to car.

Most people get up to speed then plonk it in the highest gear which isn't always the best. I'm learning this with the MX5 which seems to be better in 4th at 30 in most situations at about 3k revs. Anything below that and it seems to sup a bit more fuel.

Never had a trip computer in any of my cars though, I have to do maths and stuff :(

I know what you mean, I am like that in my 1.4 Polo and was looking at moving to a 1.6 Mini but not if the fuel stats are like that!

I honestly think I'd get better economy out of the 1.6 variant. Just like I got better economy from a 120d than a 118d. If the car responds to throttle input its easier to drive it economically whilst still maintaining a fair level of progress.
 
I'm pretty pleased with the economy of my car so far, book says an average of 33mpg and I have managed to eke about 39.5mpg on the motorway sticking to 70, but going between 70 and 90 I got 34.5mpg the other day on a trip to and from York.

Day to day I'm getting about 25-26mpg, but this is pretty much just fun miles so I don't consider that bad at all.

Sadly though it's just got the one consumption meter which I reset fairly regularly so won't really know what it's consumption will be over it's lifetime.

Yeah that makes sense. 29mpg still seems very low though. If you aren't in a rush, try following the gear "suggestion" on the dash. You'll be changing up at less than 2000rpm each time but if you drive the thing like my my mum does it's get stellar mpg!
Gay image aside they're dam fun cars to drive :D

This is what I found in the other half's old fiesta. You use the throttle a button on a playstation remote because any less than that and it does bugger all.

Why have you got a Mini One?
