Questions - Diesel engine and transmission / gearbox reliability circa 2014-2019 -BMW - Mercedes - Audi ( on small hatchback or coupe models)

£1350 repair bill for a new 3 piece clutch kit and flywheel, on a car thats has 141k on the clock and is probably not worth £1350

:/

I have no choice though, i dont have a car at the moment and i need to get back and forth to work, and get around to search for a new car
So that's £2.5-3k that you've put into the car since last year?

The money you spent for your gearbox issues last year and now the £1350?

I have not had any gearbox issues in this car

Just this issue with the clutch, flywheel

Are you referring to a gearbox oil change i may have done a year or two ago? that was just a gearbox oil change, and i paid about £100 i think

Im just hoping that if im spending £1350 on the car now, it holds out for a while, so atleast i can get back and forward to work, search around, and given im spending some money on it, i may hold it as a backup car for a little while.

Im close to getting a new car, i know what i want, im just waiting on one suitable to come about

Ah okay, yes that was what I was referring to.
my memory fails me

Is this worth a punt ?

At the moment I'm not seeing the car I want pop up yet on the BMW used approved but I am keeping an eye out

Clutch and flywheel done on the 1 series..

If feels much better. No more flywheel judder. Clutch Is smooth. Gearchanging is much better

Hoping the engine holds out now for abit .

Is it worth keeping the 1 series now then? Not sure what other issues it has, but better the devil you know?

I'm going to keep it as a commuter as I dont have anything at the moment but I am actively looking and almost to a point where if I see it I'll buy if it checks the boxes..

I don't think I would want to put all bets on 1 series..it could go on , it could have a Conrod go or bottom end.. it could be fine.. it feels much smoother to drive. And there is a lot less noise coming from the engine bay than before which was obviously clutch and flywheel judder..

Timing chain - it's a 2010 and I have oil.filter serviced it every 7k. Can't sence any noise

Who knows ,

I done the same with my old 3 series BMW but unfortunately the bottom end of the engine went at 169k

Is this worth looking at ? Spoke to them today

3 months Warrenty .
Could extend to 6 months At 499 unless I try haggle them to do 6 months included
Or 12 months £800 Warrenty

Nice eBay "M" grille stripes :D

3 months extended warranty for £500? I'd walk away on principle.

No

3 months Warrenty build it

If you want to extend to 6 months after the 3 months (making that 9 months I think) it's about £450,. 12 months £800. Warranty at any aa approved garage

This is before trying to haggle. If they could offer the usual 3 months +6 months at cost of the car It maybe an option.

At the moment there is no 420d grand coupe autos that have the wider idrive screen and flappy paddles that can see on the BMW used approved group , if I wanted one I'd need to wait around for one to come up

£800 a year is more than the BMW warranty.

There is no similar cars of that showing up right now on used approved .the ones are either manual, higher milage, smaller nav screen,

All round it looks ok, looking through the wheels you can see discs are in good nick, which I assume possibly pads are ok, I believe it has some service history on idrive

I'm not really sure. Maybe worth asking to see if they can haggle on the Warrenty ?

Probably a reason for that - I'd imagine it's more likely to be the more desirable 430d that gets specced up, rather than the "cheap model"

I dont need a 430d. And there Is nothing wrong with the 420d grand coupe. What exactly has the 430d got ? I don't want a bigger engined car .

And it's not a cheap model

A cheap model would have a small display, no flappy paddle etc

Whether you need it or not, the 6 cylinder is the "right" engine for these and will be the cars that were specced decently by people who wanted a nice car. The 420d and to a lesser extent 420i are more likely ex company car, or cheap lease etc and likely lesser specced.

This comes into play when buying used as if less were specced new, then inevitably less will be available used. I imagine if you looked at 430d it would be easier to find the spec you want.

You don't need to buy it from BMW to buy the warranty, needs a full service history with OEM parts easier to keep it simple and make sure it has a full BMW service history and under 60k to get the cheaper rate .

430d engine is far smother if it's like the 3 series there is also more sound insulation for the engine bay so less diesel rattle. There isn't that much in it fuel consumption wise either.

I thought Pro Nav was standard on the 4 Series maybe was only the LCI model, it is very easy to retro fit the larger Nav screen or add the later iDrive if it doesn't have it, loads of companies offer the service now if you don't want to DIY.

Paddles are pointless with the ZF gearbox I used them only a couple of times, I put it in Sports mode to overtake put it back to drive once I am finished.

Any good to you? Great colour. Nothing special spec wise but they aren't bad as standard.
