Drop roadside assistance (they'll still come and get you but it's directly to the closest BMW dealer, nowhere else) and if you want to put the excess up to £250 that'll bring it down to somewhere around £550-600 I'd imagine.
If it's a 3rd party warranty - then you are paying for it one way or another (i.e. via it being "included" in the price).
The dealer is essentially washing their hands of any issues and just palming you off with a 3rd party warranty.
Seeing as you're already fixing the clutch on your 120d, are there any other potential failure points soon that would mean you can't wait?

Have you actually gone into a BMW dealer and asked?
If you make them aware of your interest in a certain model/spec, then they can often contact customers and entice them into trading their existing cars in
Yes, i said before i had gone in to Sytner BMW cardiff
They said just keep an eye on the used appove website
May not, like i said, its hard to tell, my old 3 series had bottom end engine failure at 169k
My 120d is on 141k now, its also got the N47 engine
I cant say if it will or not, its a luck thing
I wouldnt want to hold out though too long, as if something happens, i wont have a car! i need a car

Then you've probably been unrealistic with your budget especially for an approved used..
Most proper dealers I've dealt with (Audi, Ford and Mini) have all been open to trying to locate a car, knowing that they can potentially do a deal on the car you want to buy (and potentially whatever you part ex), and if they've got "anyone currently on their books" who could be persuaded to buy a new car, another deal.

@ Armageus - No i havnt ? the budget is fine and there are cars around my budget on the used approved site? just not the one im looking for. Plenty of 4 series grand coup petrols, which i dont think i want, some manuals (which i have decided i dont want)
There is a couple of autos aswel, but not really ones that i want,
Its just a stock rotation thing or one to come up that i need to wait for
There is two models very very close, one appears to be recently listed, no images yet but unfortunatly its a manual, another one listed but is an xdrive which i dont think i want a 4 wheel drive
This is the first time i have even concidered buying a car from a main dealer, iv never purchased a car from a main dealer before or even from used approved site.... they have always been 3rd party traders

It's the second cheapest LCI 420d under 70000 miles on auto trader from a trade dealer. Id be wondering why
That example is from a bottom of the barrel scum trader who couldn't care less what happens to the car after he has your money. The warranty probably won't cover what you think it does
There are plenty of 420d Autos on there at the minute - plenty that meet your criteria, just not your budget.

It's not - an Approved Used is going to cost more - it covers the cost of the approved used warranty, plus basic work to ensure that the car is to a decent standard i.e. Tyres replaced, Services that are nearly due are done, and the car will be guaranteed to be essentially problem free for a year.
Your budget isn't enough.
So either buy from a 3rd party and take your chance, or up your budget and get something you can be proud of.

Err, my budget is £14500, i can see cars listed for £14500 on the used approved site, therefore, it is enough

People who pay top end whack for cars, all your paying for is your quick depreciation
Also, spending £25-30k on a car does not gaurentee no problems, your just as likely to get issues then, and have to use your warrenty fixing a car you just spent £25-30k on.

Absolutely not - even brand new cars get issues. The difference in how you can deal with them, and what rights and protections you have in place.
In your example of the bargain basement dealer. He will want no part of dealing with an issue, hence him selling you a 3rd party warranty. What if the warranty doesn't cover e.g. a new gearbox? You can try your consumer rights against him, maybe even take him to the small claims court, but good luck with that, as he just shuts the business and opens up under a new name next week.
Whereas, a BMW approved will likely be a better car in the first place - guaranteed service history. And it's covered by a full year of BMW warranty that is essentially the best in the business. Even in the event that the warranty doesn't cover it, you've got usually the backing of the specific BMW Dealer Franchise that is unlikely to disappear. As well as the option of escalating to BMW UK with any complaints/concerns.

I have seen lots of 420d grand coupes within budget, just because they are not approved used BMW. There are also cars that would show up on the used approved site, however, you have to wait for something to come up on the market
Abit like waiting for a new property to be listed by someone on the property market.

Fine - Just buy what you want. You've made it clear that despite numerous people given you some pretty good advice, that unless it's what you come up with, you aren't going to entertain it. That's fine as well, but if/when it goes wrong, surely you can't say you weren't warned.

Therefore I'd either stretch that little more for an Approved Used (as I did with my Wife's Mini Countryman), or look at something else that I could sensibly afford.

Well i did opt for buying a 2 series or 3 series, but clearly its not good enough and i should buy a Ford instead.

There is no point me spending £25k on a car thats going to be driven through a city and some motorway which has completely crappy conditioned roads
Given that my current car is a standard M Sport 120D with no nav screens, no real feature and cost me £5500 when i bought it, , and the car before that was a BMW320D SE which i paid £6k for
i would say what ever i buy would be a step up, and im raising my budget to £14.5k, £14.8k at a push,

Your problem is not that there's "no compromise" or the budget is objectively too small, it's that when your budget was £10k you were looking for cars that demanded £12k for a good clean example. Now you've upped your budget to £14k but you're also now trying to buy cars that will demand £16k for a clean example.
Used cars are more expensive than last time you were car shopping. People tried to tell you this a year ago but you disagreed, yet here you are a year later, still unable to find a decent example of anything you like in your budget. If you don't change your expectations, this conversation will probably still be happening in 2026. Or you'll have bought a cheap lemon and be complaining it's broken and the warranty turned out to be toilet paper.
