Questions - Diesel engine and transmission / gearbox reliability circa 2014-2019 -BMW - Mercedes - Audi ( on small hatchback or coupe models)

Had a solo test drive of this today.. they let me go out in it on my own .

The 420i gran.coup I was looking at a while ago

Seems to drive ok, I think power wise it is ok although one thing I noticed straight away was the difference in engine noise compared to the.420d.when inside or when idling at lights .
,
although I did notice between 50-70 there was flat spot on power delivery. Is this just because I'm more used to diesel?. I though the torque is felt more when your pulling off?

This is a manual box though so i didn't get a chance to test out a ZF8 auto

They had dropped the price £200 since I last looked at it as it was listed as £14449 but is now £142xx

The warrenty side of things they said they use a Warrenty administrator but its.their own Warrenty (not sure what to think of that) I asked if it could be taken to an AA approved garage should something happen it was a yes

I done this to try and decide on a 420d Vs 420i

It's almost like going to your local motorpoint (or other car supermarket) and test driving several cars of different engines and gearboxes isn't an option?

I've used 3rd party warranties before

If something goes wrong you have to call them up first to find out if the garage you'll bring the car to will be covered
Then once it's there, you pay for the diagnostics to be done first - this may be claimable later
Once the diagnostics are done and the fault hopefully identified and it's not an item that is excluded from the warranty terms
The company will send out their own inspector/valuer
3 things can happen from here:
1) They accept the repair and the costs associated
2) They accept the repair but not the costs (hopefully shouldn't be your problem but may become your problem, personally I've never had this happen to me)
3) Denied

Sometimes if it's (1) or (2), you have to settle the whole bill first and then claim back after
Also, you get the diagnostic fee repaid once you give the warranty company the invoices after the repair is completed

Option 4 is if the fault is excluded from the warranty then you won't get the diagnostic fee back either

Wouldn't that be the case for BMW anyway? They still charge for diagnosis even if your under warranty? Ill have to read up more on it

I'd the margin is that close in terms of cost obviously it's better to go with BMW used approved.. I'm.starting to see drops in normal traders.

I'm.still aiming towards a ZF8 and I now have driven a petrol, also another thing as I'm not a petrol owner

he started the 420i manual up and there was abit of white smoke for about 3-6 seconds out the exhaust but then cleaned up. Is this anything to worry about on the 420i? Is there any leaks I'm reading or head gasket?

It's irrelevant without the full terms and conditions.

It may have per claim or overall payout limits for example, or limits on labour cost and other specifics.

The whole reason people keep recommending BMW Approved warranty, is that all of these things are known, and it's backed by a reputable company that won't try and weasel out of doing work (although granted it can be a pain to get past the dealership gatekeeping first)

I will ask to see if this garage has the full terms and conditions, at the moment, im still holding out for a BMW used approved one, however, some of the ones listed on the site are close i terms of ticking the boxes, but not quite, within my budget, one comes very close and would be perfect, if it wasnt the manual box and didnt have the blue leather interior.

These warranties all look and read the same - the reality is the underwriters are strict and don't like paying out for things. AutoProtect underwrite that one.

Warranty is obviously important to you - it certainly is to me - so get the BMW one. It's tried and tested.

If not, don't say we didn't warn you if things go wrong in future. Hopefully they won't.

7) - You'd need to have a copy of the accompanying schedule - for all you know the claim limit might be £500.
8) - not sure if this is the same for all warranties e.g. BMW approved.
11) - I'd imagine BMW approved wouldn't be using reconditioned or exchange parts
12) - Not sure if this is standard, but that sounds like a big opt out that screams, we won't pay the full amount as a new part will be better than what's fitted.

Correct, and i know most warrenties will look the same

Although as i said, i have never used a used approved before, and i have managed to get new ABS , reluctor rings, new calipers sorted one one car with the "built in" warrenty on a garage

On another car i have had a new turbo fitted within a 3 month built in warrenty.

Autoprotect are situated in the town I was born in (Harlow / essex) I have plenty of family there. although Like any company iv not really heard or dealt with them

I will try and keep scanning for a car on the BMW used approved, although as i said, my limit is a hard one, I am not really willing to up my budget to £17k unfortunately

Max i am willing to go is £14.5 to £15k or maybe £100 over the £15k mark (£15.1k)

3 months isn't a "built in warranty". That is your entitlement under consumer rights law.

Make no mistake warranties are very useful, but they shouldn't be a get out of jail card for the dealer to avoid fixing problems within the first 3 months. After that, then yes it's "your" problem and is where a warranty comes in.

I can see about 12 cars under £15k on BMW AUC, so what's the issue? You're on about a white 420i manual so I doubt spec is very important...

Link them up ? what models ? iv been looking over the past 2 weeks daily.

Some of them very close in terms of spec to tick the boxes, but there is always something that doesnt tick every box

Im looking for a 4 series coupe or gran coupe, ideally over 2017, ideally milage up to 65k, has the wide nav screen, is not a convertable, and has the auto box,

are you doing a 4 series search ?

Those requirements are quite tight for your budget, but it's possible. One example:

I know you seem strict on budget, but it's often better and cheaper in the long run to pay a bit more and get a good one. I don't see the point in scraping around at the bottom of the barrel when it comes to cars. If your budget is this strict then I'd say you're in the realms of not being able to afford a decent one.
