I usually just give them a good hit but I got told the best way is to put them in a freezer bag (with water) and just stick them in the freezer until the fish just slows down with the drop in temp then eventually .........
Sound like an internal bacterial infection like dropsy or somit and this causes the eyes to protrude with the building pressure inside the fish.
