Quickest way to humanely kill a small fish ?

Ive owned tropical fish for years and the most humane way to kill a fish is to put it into a small container of freezing water and place it in the freezer.

Freezer - This has long been a favourite method and is widely recommended even now. The fish is said to drift off to sleep as the temp lowers. In actual fact it is one of the cruelest and slowest methods of all and it will involve a great deal of suffering.

Fish torturer!

LOL

ahh good old OCUK comedy, givin what I have available, its gonna have to be put in a bag and wacked with a brick, dont think freezing it will be humane there will be a period of time when the fish gets v uncomfortable and suffers surely ? Just as anyone would being put in a freezer! lol

EDIT: yeh as above it seems! lol

Jesus christ, you lot are gross.

EDIT: beaten to it by numerous people

The most humane way to put a fish to sleep is to fish him out the water and place him into a tuperware box, place it in the freezer for a couple of hours.

As fish get cold they conserve energy by almost entering a sleep like state, it'll then die in its sleep with no to very little pain.

Otherwise, do as above and kill it with fire or summit to that effect....

Clove oil, and then the Vodka sounds the best way IMO.

This place makes me wonder at times, the guys asking to put his pet fish out of its misery and almost all the replys are jokes? :(

Freezing it is likely to cause pain. It's a bit of a myth that this is a pain free way of killing a fish. Would you prefer to be frozen to death or die instantly?

What you want is either a massive overdose of anaesthetic (Clove Oil is the only one readily available); or a method of destroying the brain quickly to prevent the fish feeling pain. It's unpleasant, but the most effective way to kill a tiny fish like that would be to quickly crush it between two heavy objects (such as a couple of bricks), if you can stomach it. Cutting through the brain quickly with a sharp knife would also do the trick.

Take it with you to a bank robbery. It can be your inexperienced accomplice and will invariably be shot by the Police during an exchange of fire during the getaway.

I do suggest though, that as the fish is particularly small, you don't give it the job of driving the getaway vehicle.

Let it go out in a blaze of glory.

All you need to do is get a small block of wood or simular and nock it a few times on the head. Thats what I usually do when trout fishing

I wasn't kidding. Ring a vet and ask, they'll know.

If you go to a vet they'll either prescribe benzocaine or MS-222. However, both of these are likely to set you back £20+, and not many people would pay that for a fish that costs £1.50... As it will take you a while to get some Clove Oil, if the exophthalmia is causing the fish to suffer and it's not responding to treatment, then euthanasia with the two bricks technique would probably be the most humane thing you can do.

(I'm a fish biologist).
