R9 290X Owners Thread

Rather worryingly the card arrived with a note in the box from a previous RMA stating that it had black screen issues....

Plugged it in PC, played some BF4 and all seems fine however! Very nice upgrade over the GTX280.

I would give it a run on one of the looping benchmarks with all bells and whistles on and memory clocked up without upping core voltage. Normally shows a black screen issue if there is one to be found.

Have you tried Mantle?

Had a very quick 5 minute game using it earlier and seemed quite nice and smooth, about to try it again now. Any secrets to getting the best out of it, or just a case of change to mantle from DX11 and enjoy?

Edit: am using 14.4 RC drivers if that makes any difference?

Edit 2: Realized I didn't restart the game after applying Mantle earlier, doh! Shall experience it now.

Thanks for the advice, will give that a go :)

Good man.

To best document the difference between DX and Mantle one should run this User.cfg file. It will literally show you the difference in the corners of the screen while you play. Just remove it if you don't want the fps/overlay displaying. Place it in your main BF4 game exe folder.

Silky smooth even at 2560*1440, excellent! Thanks for the link but will probably just leave it, it's not lagging so I don't want to get too hung up on frame rate lol.

Now, to somehow justify another 290X and another two screens....

Welcome to Mantle, enjoy your stay. :p

PS Get another 290X, then Mantle really begins to shine over DX11.1.

This might be worth trying with regards to the black screen issue. Have you checked your vrm temps ??
