R9 290X Owners Thread

Has anyone tried Metro LL on this card? It runs perfectly fine until I get into a fire fight, then it drops to as low as 10-20FPS. I can only hope it's a driver issue

pprest123 i was stability testing today did 10x benchmark run while working out :P
Average Framerate: 49.10
Max. Framerate: 81.79
Min. Framerate: 20.95

Works fine. But thats benchmarking so hard to say

JBod yes You need newest atiflash sec i upload and give link

https://www.dropbox.com/s/iaa0gm109ewm84k/atiflash.exe

This is working ATIFLASH in dos mode

Brilliant worked :) Although I have full access to all the settings in GPUTweak now it doesn't actually seem to change the GPU volts :( In fact according to the graph in GPUTweak it never goes above 1218, so not even 1250.

Edit: I think it is just V droop, I bumped it up further and it did change.

HOW TO FLASH ASUS BIOS + TOOLS NEEDED

Did you do it from a DOS boot disk?
Edit: tried from DOS and it says no ATI device found using version 4.07.

Following the techpowerup guide does work but it links to the wrong atiflash (older version), and the command to flash is missing the -f switch.
I have spent a bit of time today finding the correct atiflash and some bios files and have put them all together into a zip file you can grab here:

http://sdrv.ms/1c9DpWB

Unzip that and you will have all the correct bits needed so you can follow TPU guide:

http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/showthread.php?t=57750

You will need an empty USB stick (the HP tool will format it). The win98 boot files are included in my zip file, you need to direct the hp tool to use them.

Before performing the flash I went into the AMD OverDrive control panel and set it back to defaults and unticked 'Enable Graphics OverDrive'. This meant I was back to stock and minimised risk of any problems when it booted back up with the new bios.

Once booted into the USB stick with the files copied you can get flashing! Firstly I ran the following command:

atiflash -s 0 backup.rom

This gave me a copy of my sapphire bios incase I want to reflash in future, or any problem occurred with flashing the asus bios. I have included this bios image in the zip file above (sapphire.rom).

You then are ready to flash the Asus bios as follows:

atiflash -p -f 0 asus.rom

If you don't use the -f switch you will get an SSID check error and it won't go through with the flashing. If you have multiple cards you just need to run the command again, incrementing the number until all your cards are flashed.
Reboot, remove USB stick and you're done!

Now you will need to use Asus GPU Tweak software to do your overclocking, as far as I am aware MSI afterburner doesn't work properly with this card yet - haven't even tried it myself. You can get it direct from Asus here:

http://support.asus.com/download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=gpu+tweak&os=30

I've got mine running at 1150 core & 6000 mem @ 1.350v. Make sure you always have the power target slider set at the max of 150%, to ensure that the card can draw the power it needs when required.

Hope this guide helps! Will also post this as a new thread in the graphics cards section (if there isn't one already) as I see many people asking how to flash across many forums. The Asus bios rom is from Gibbo so many thanks to him for getting hold of it for us :)

@Kaaps.

Now you've had a good play (with your cards), what's your opinion?

Single card, performance top notch

CF needs work, good performance in some things, very poor in others. I hope this improves for when I have all 4 going at the same time.

GPU Tweak is as crap as ever. One thing to watch out for is if you set your fans to 100% in GPU Tweak, go into CCC and make sure they are at 100% there too.

The cards don't really run that hot, the problem is the coolers are loud at high speed, nothing watercooling won't cure.

If the cards are allowed to run at stock they are not that loud.

Unless you have a case with very good air flow, don't buy more than one non ref card, they are like the Matrix Platinums and use/produce a lot of volts/heat.

For the money they are very good bang for buck.

Cheers mate, so drowning them is the way to go :)

Switched to windows 8.1 today... No end of grief with it!!

started this morning pretty much and only am i installing stuff like steam, origin etc.

My biggest problem has been either the amd drivers or windows going crazy.

Booting into the desktop would result in an instant black screen which locked the system.

Addicted i know. I Pre ordered my block with backplate and some bits. If i knew they are so hot/loud i would have ordered them str8 from Slovakia :/
Especially now when ocuk bumped prices of the block :/

No word about water blocks from other guys :/
