R9 290X Owners Thread

Someone has made an interesting discovery in the Guru3D thread re: the black screens, but looking frame by frame at a video of the crash.

http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=383104&page=3

Pretty interesting, but i just want to play some games: )

Nick would you be able to upload a pic of gpuz, afterburner log etc after playing Bf4? I don't suffer from the crashes I think It would be good to compare and see what, if anything is different.

Just power on the system and run bf4 as soon as your able to, if you can, jump on a 64 player server, any map but I prefer golmud railway lol.

Think I've been lucky also, no black screen/freeze for me, had the odd quite to desktop,
I will note that the stock clocks on mine are 1030 and 1250. Hynix mem

Temps I hit on air in my case is 85ish with a 55% fan speed set. 60hz monitor.
Is everyone thinking that it's related to 120hz monitors then?

My Asus VG248QE is black screen free in Valley, in both 120 hz lightboost mode and "121 hz" (120.5 hz actual) non LB, as well as 100 hz. So it's definitely NOT 120 hz monitors unless it has something specific to do with the Benq, or maybe the other DL-DVI port needs to be used? What monitors are people using that are 120 hz and black screening? (i'd be really really surprised if it was benq specific..it's JUST a monitor..)

This is all so insanely frustrating. This post is half a vent and half a cry for help :)

I am being told I cannot get a refund on my 290x because I have redeemed the BF4 key. While i dont think this is legally sound, it is made worse by the fact that - for those that don't know - AMD (or maybe DICE?) botched the AMD\BF4 bundle keys release quite badly, it's documented here:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?p=25258289#post25258289

It took eight days for me to receive my BF4 key (after redeeming it via the Gaming Evolved site) during which time I bought a retail copy).
While I have not used this key in Origin, I have scratched the card to reveal the key. I have an Origin BF4 key in an email and cannot use it.

My 290x is essentially defective, it only works in 2D, on the desktop. The black screen issue is well documented now, but no one is making any progress in determining the cause.

I know that some people are having no issues at all with these cards, however a lot of people definitely are.

As i said before, an RMA is a really unpleasant option for me, as I:

- Work from home a lot and I would not have a desktop for other things for the duration of the RMA.
- It is almost certainly - I would think - a hardware incompatibility of some sort. If i lose my desktop for a week or two and then have the same card returned to me, only for this to be fixed via driver update, after everything else that has happened with this, I will put my fist through the wall.

Looking at this poll:

http://www.overclock.net/t/1441349/290-290x-black-screen-poll

The overwhelming majority are using UEFI. This tallies with what Club3D and ASRock have suggested. This has to be a bug or a fairly large batch of defective units. If it is the later, surely now is the time for someone to actually respond to my emails?

Sapphire - insanely poor support, have ignored me for 5 days. I've actually done every thing they have suggested, no matter how pointless, (reinstall Windows), just to appease them an expedite the process.

AMD - have ignored two support tickets over almost 14 days now.

Insane rock and hard place shenanigans.

I would pay the difference to get a 580TI quite happily, if it was even an option for me.

Have you tried installing in non-UEFI mode? it's not ideal I know but if you are expecting a fast fix from AMD you'll likely be left disappointed, they still have some trouble with their cards exiting sleep and that has been an issue for YEARS.

It's the one thing i haven't tried, as i wasn't quite clear if CSM = enabled on my ASRock board was pretty much BIOS mode. Other people claim to have tried it without success, one person i know of says it fixed the problem for him.
The problem is you can sometimes go 4 hours without a crash, the problem is so intermittent there are a lot of red herrings out there.

As you say, if this is the fix, it's far from ideal.

I am sure that some agreement can be made with regards to the BF4 key like taking the cost of the game away from the refund amount that seems fair if you have a broken card and you still get to keep the game. Maybe thats possible ?

Have you tried to flash the asus bios onto the sapphire card maybe its down to a memory timings issues there was some interesting stuff on 3D guru about it that some linked a few posts up. I wonder if the sapphire bios is not great i have the same card but i flashed mine and i dont have the same problems as everyone else.

Just an idea who knows might help:)

PCI-E 2.0 should be fine, I have the Gen 3 version of the same board, great boards :-)

The reason why I am asking, is what's the problem with doing an RMA of the card? You still have onboard graphics on that motherboard, so you won't be out with your desktop for two weeks.

I've actually just found a GT 220 in a cupbaord, go knows where it came from - so I'll be able to use that.

My main issue with an RMA was the fact that we - i.e. the people having the issue- are almost certainly experiencing a hardware incompatibility of some sort.

I appreciate i may be wrong, I'm totally open to the fact everyone who is having the problem has a faulty card, it's just that it seems unlikely and - therefore - an RMA is a colossal waste of everyone's time. But perhaps i just have to go through with it.

What is probably more of a waste of time is me losing my temper on a forum :) IBut it's all very frustrating and the whole BF4 key thing, AMD messing up the keys, having to buy a retail copy and then the suggestion it somehow invalidates DSR, therefore preventing me from swapping it for a 780, which is now all i want to do. I just don't want to challenge Overclockers because they are normally so nice to people, everything combined just makes me generally annoyed with the whole situation and i have more important things to be doing...

Basically I want to play X-COM this weekend, it's probably the last gaming weekend i'll get before January. And i won't be able to. And i don't even understand what the lesson is here, for me, or anyone.

I could come up with some more flippant lessons.

I don't want to bash on AMD (although their customer relations *is* truly awful). I've had problems with NVIDA in the past too. The only concrete lesson here is never buy anything at launch?
Almost every other generation i waited a few months and had no problems. Bought a GTX580 the day of release and it had that thing where the screen would get artefacts after it down clocked in 2D. That was solved via RMA, and seems like a million years ago. Bought a second 580 six months later and it was golden.

Ah well.

Waiting for the fourth card to arrive.
