R9 290X Owners Thread

Hey guys,

Wondering if anybody else has had this, so I was playing a bit of BF4 campaign this morning as I wanted to see something, and after logging out I noticed that despite my overclock, my Core was capping out at 1000Mhz:

The memory overclock was fine, as you can see it hit a max of 1450 as per the OC setting.

If I apply the overclock via preset manually though the issue seems to go back to normal and core clock actually gets to 1200 as per the setting. Was just wondering if anybody else had experienced this?

Unistall CCC

Now also getting Black screen crash in BF4 (only) - apparently there was an update to BF4 servers after some DDOS attacks, but going from playing 4 hours straight during the weekend, I can't stay in a game for more than 15 mins without a black screen crash now... very sucky...

Just a little question. Flashed my sapphire with asus bios. This is what GPU-Z reports:

Is that normal?

The drivers are not even WHQL atm. My R9 290X' memory clocks up to constant 1250 MHz @ 75 Hz. @60Hz it's running fine, down to 150MHz (or so...)
The higher clocks result in my GPU-temp. raising by 12 degrees to almost 50°C in idle. @ 60Hz it reaches ~36°C. :D

But then I'd lose functionality like extending desktop to my TV etc etc. I don't have overdrive enabled.

I have this issue and found that just disabling the ccc startup items fixes the issue and AB now applies the overclock at startup. You can then open ccc manually when required.

I only seem to get this problem when my memory is overclocked, running at stock I haven't had a black screen crash. I was playing AC4 last night for 2 hours overclocked at 1150/6000 and it was rock solid, no artefacts or glitches. BF4 is of course more demanding though. When Mantle update is released hopefully it will take some pressure off the gpu and may allow us to use better overclocks. I have a Sapphire with Elpida mem. I can clock my mem up to the max of 1625 and so far it benches fine in Heaven, its just BF4 that bums out.

Side fan sounds like a good idea. My case actually has vents on the side that could redirect outside air onto to the vrms. That should help cool it, right? I'm gonna replace the vrm heatsinks with enzotech mosfets anyway.

Not my pic, but this is my case. Cooler Master Elite 430

If you can fit 120mm fans to your cooler then I would highly reccomend the Scythe GT's - they have about the highest static pressure (airblow) of any fan on the market which is important when mounting to a heatsink. I had the MK-26 fitted to my 290X and upgrading to the Scythes saw my VRM temps drop by about 20 degrees! Beware though that they are quite weighty so you may need to prop your card up a bit if board flex becomes an issue. They would also be great as side mounted case fans blowing onto the card. OCUK sell them!

That copper base is terrible for a £450 card, you'd think they'd take care on little details like that given how poor the cooler is.

Turned out I would get black screen crash on Crysis 3 after about 15-20 mins of gameplay too.

I then remembered about the AUX power in Afterburner, added +50mv on that (I've read about sites doing it when doing OC'ing on the 290X's on air) and I was once again able to play solid on both titles with no crashes at 1200/1450.

Maybe worth a try if you are getting Black Screen crashes, I am on Watercooling though so my temps never go above 49oC on load, and my VRM's also peak @51oC I think on the VRM1 sensor in GPU-Z.

how much :D
and what overclockability does it have

£420 inc BF4. 3 Year warranty. Seems decent price for it's performance, I fancy a change until 20nm so this will be ideal. I did look at the 780 ti's but were more than £130 more expensive w/less vram. Mantle and 290X's raw performance won me over. Looking forward to trying to tame Hawaii. Will be getting it under water asap.

i just ordered 3 r9 290's for the same reason sent my single gtx 780 ti back as it had issues with the memory, i hope mantle rocks!
