R9 Nano Review thread

This. I think AMD knew they could not currently compete with full fat Maxwell using DDR5 so went to HBM early to save face (ie so they at least had something close in performance and perf per watt for a while) all the while knowing full well it would be a disaster sales wise as supply would be so bad.

The HBM cards have given AMD knowledge of the tech so they can iron out any bugs and improve it when they go to the next die shrink and incorporate it into their APU's, etc.

AMD basically launched the reworked 300 series cards as their main sellers with the Fury cards serving as a limited supply premium range.

Utter crap

How is it upper crap? The entire next gen is using a completely new design process. Fiji Is essentially a test card for this new production method.

Do you expect them to release an entire range on a new and untested production line? Remember that interposed GPU's have far more construction steps and part suppliers than current gpus.

Don't they test all gpu's like this? If we take your argument, every gpu review out there is mis-representing the true operating temps while gaming. It's not something specific to the nano. If you want to make the nano reviewers use a case at all times then you'll have to ask them to do the same for any gpu they review.

Maybe the tests are as they are because most reviews feature more than one gpu for comparisons so I assume they have to swap out the cards at some point which makes bench tests quicker.

Your simply ignoring the point I'm making, Changing the rules to suit the argument.

It's a card designed for SFF as everyone keeps pointing out, As you mistakenly pointed out in the other thread (you even linked the review) we are not getting tests done that mirror how it will be used and that does matter, You used that review as an example of how the reviews are being done in sff cases yet you failed to acknowledge that it was in fact only limited thermal testing and what they then did was put it in a full tower case and leave the sides off to do the game testing. When a cards power output is dynamically controlled by temps this is going to provide results that will be very different to what Joe Bloggs get's when he builds his SFF rig with one. You failure to accept such a basic fact is mind boggling. It's pointless going on about it as it's simply going in circles.

Awesome lil card, MITX king is here. Wees on the 980 at High resolution and holds it's own at low resolution.

Once the price settles down a bit, these are perfect for smaller builds. Skylake i5 + Nano in a decent MITX case would be a great build.

Haven't seen anyone mention the fact that Fiji will get a couple of wonder drivers over its lifetime, in addition to umpteen little bumps here and there. All-new tech takes time to fully tap. I doubt Maxwell will improve much.

I would expect price to ease off after supply problems clear up, it's good now & will be unbeatable later.

Except the smallest case I can find with say a 450W PSU, is the SG05, which is big enough for a 980ti reference card, which throttles less / is faster / cheaper than the nano... Would you want to run a nano off a 250W psu?

For ffs andy your AMD negativity is unprecedented(excluding the odd couple), you should know what Nano is all about, youv'e had many a Halo product too.:D

Yes it's too expensive, yes there's faster, but nothing can touch it for what it is.

Lucky for me, I don't have to be negative. In stock at launch time, 5... In stock at tea time on launch day... 5... Positive launch?

Edit: Even OCUK are trolling AMD now as everytime I refresh the forum all I get is a 980ti banner ad

So you admit you're a partisan hack.

I admit I find it incredibly funny how people have been bigging up the nano vs the reality we see today. I've never claimed to be a journalist though.

I'm quite capable of having more than one outlook on the situation. On the one hand a competitive AMD is good for the consumer market on the whole and I wish them well. On the other it is hilarious how bent out of shape some people get over their favourite pet corporation's ups and downs.

980Ti is the best card for the moment. Fury X, Fury and Nano may well be better for the future but sadly I doubt that future will arrive within the lifespan of these cards. Hats off to AMD though for the work they have done on both GCN and HSA.

if you have mini this is top though of course 980ti is the king of full size no doubt :p

Any case with a power supply big enough for a Nano is also big enough for a 980ti, like the SG05... I'll admit I don't know everything about mitx cases so is there one smaller than the SG05 with a decent power supply?

Couldn't agree more, absolutely shabbles of **** from AMD, which is a shame, the cards i feel are fantastic, it's just the pricing is the biggest issue.

In Bang for Buck land the Fury X would have been £399, the Fury Pro and Fury Nano £349 and the 390X, 390 would have been £249/£199 respectively.

Can the real AMD please come out from behind the curtain now....come on you've had your fun...it's time to get realistic now.

I would much prefer the Bang 4 Buck AMD rather than the Niche Market AMD, for sure.

I get the strange feeling that the Fiji cards were all just a production experiment for HBM 1.

The last line could well be a valid point, albeit I don't think AMD can really afford to experiment but I am a docker and know bugger all about business.
