Oh dear.

Took part in my first NASCAR race today. Practiced the track so I knew I could hold a line around it but it's impossible to practice for the fact you're travelling 5-6mph faster in the actual race. Managed to wreck 3 other cars losing control on the 3rd lap :(

Good job it was only a "for fun" race!

Guessing that was the 'carb cup' thing, the sprint cup car around either Daytona or Talladega? if so not all ovals are like that, in terms of the draft pack giving the huge speed boost.

But still how did you lose it around there? :p or I'm guessing you went into the back of someone? If you're gaining on someone quickly just ride the brakes a bit (or hit them for a bit of bumpdrafting but that generally doesn't go so well :p)

At a more normal track you might gain 2-3mph in the draft but it's easily handleable, plus they're more fun than the plate tracks. (I really enjoy the Late Model tbh, short tracks are more fun, imo)

It was the Carb cup at Talladega. I have no what happened idea to be honest. I even followed another pack around for the rest of the race without trouble. I came into the turn on the front straight and I thought I was doing what I'd done all the way through practice and the first two laps but then the back end went slightly. I was running low so I came off the banking, lost control and ended up in the wall. I only tapped someone but it sent them into another car causing them both to crash as well. Someone else went off the track to avoid us and took another car out. :(

I played iRacing for a couple of weeks and enjoyed it but I need a steering wheel to get the full enjoyment, I'm tempted but won't bite the bullet, RL stuff is stopping me

I have read that the setup for that is quite a loose one, not tried it though, any chance you could've just crept onto the apron (bit below the banking) as that'll get you nice and loose :p

And I've just realised I've slipped into american-oval-speak, loose = oversteer for normal people...

Gelly54, yeah a steering wheel is really the only way to go :)

On a random note last night I fired up some GT5 which I've been playing one and off for a few days to do the seasonals, then got bored and fired up iRacing did a few laps testing and then a race in the skippy around Road Atlanta short. The first lap or so of the testing was an experience, going from the GT5 style of driving to having to actually be precise, the skippy is oversteery enough when you're being smooth so that was good fun :)

How do you guys rate rFactor? Is the community for it and GTR/RACE ON still active? I imagine things are a bit quiet since iRacing came along, but I'm really loathe to pay a subscription and ongoing DLC charges. :)

imo rFactor has two problems:

Firstly, it's not iRacing, it simply isn't as good a sim, although some features are better.

Secondly the need to 'fuss' around with various mods/tweaks/downloads to get anything even approaching good.

But that's just my opinion, even before iRacing came out rFactor just didn't appeal, could never make it feel as good as GPL, and the quality of some of the tracks is just poor (and even the best are 'just ok')

LFS is another one that just doesn't quite hit the spot.

....as good as GPL

Nail+head that comment right there, a lot of people won't have tried or even heard of GPL, but ever since those days nothing has come close. iRacing fills that gap and more - honestly try it for a month and see what we mean, after iRacing nothing really feels the same.
The only way is to try them and see what fits your style, as you probably noticed we all have different play styles and so on.

Agree with this. Despite the cost, once I tried iRacing I couldn't go back to any other sim. The quality of the mods are all over the place in Rfactor with only a select few that are of a high quality.

Also, there is so much content now that the community is hugely fragmented and it can be hard to find races in your preferred car/mod. And unless you are part of a league online racing on public servers is not much fun. Full of people who can't drive or race to save their lives.

GTR Evo and RACE are OK I suppose, I got some fun out of them. But again, just can't compete with iRacing. It's so good I happily pay the extra cost.

I wish there was a PAYG model, like you buy a block of credits then it costs x amount of credits per race.

I used to play GPL, but it has died of death.

At the moment I've got the demo's for rFactor, LFS, GTREvo and RACE ON. New G27 arrives later today, and at the moment I'm preferring LFS out of those, with GTR/RACE ON a close second. Sounds like I'll give rFactor a miss - I'd hoped some mods would make it worth while, but as it is it feels arcadey. Will be installing GPL again but that will only be solo races.

I'm tempted to try the buy 1 get 2 months free deal iRacing has at the moment, but I will be playing so sporadically I can't justify even that kind of offer.

Looking for a quick reply, best racing wheel for <£50?

Planning on getting one today. I had a blast around Melbourne in F1 2010 and I think I've caught the bug!

Yeah, you really need to be playing quite actively for it to be worth it (or just willing to spend that amount for the odd time you want to practice/race), but if you liked GPL then you'll like iRacing as well, the feel is very similar but with (now at least) a much wider range of cars/tracks.

Saying that I do intend to install GPL again soon, read recently that it now supports eyefinity, triple screen goodness in the eagle around spa, what could be better?

And I miss the sound of the ferrari :)

Unfortunately sub-£50 wheels are generally crap, realistically the cheapest wheel I'd go for is the Logitech DFGT (around £80), below that I'd actually recommend sticking with a gamepad (xbox360 pad seems to be recommended in general, no idea how that fares in F1 2010/sims)

I've only played F1 2010 with my wheel personally but I'd imagine it would work quite nicely with a gamepad.

Also worth noting that F1 2010 isn't really a sim, it's quite a large learning curve between F1 2010 and the likes of iRacing etc. Guess it kinda sits in the middle as 'semi-sim' with things like Forza/GT/NFS Shift etc.
