Racism

Hyopethically; (i've often wondered this)
if you're having a [heated] argument with a someone of a different race (about any subject) and you trade insults and you call them a [insert racially provocative insult here], would you be classed as a racist?
If you're trying to insult someone then you say what you know will offend them....which is the very nature on an insult, surely. You won't care what it is you say as long as it insults them. But DOES it make you racist?

I don't see why it should, but perception is a wonderfully crazy thing.

In short it depends on who you ask lol!

This is somehow relevant to the thread but I just remembered about this.

The Facebook page of the town I live in had a status the other month asking people their favourite and least favourite things about the town. Some braindead person started spurting out racist things saying "All pakis are taking our jobs" and stuff, and the actual town page liked his comment. I was so annoyed that I voiced my opinion of him as a racist imbecile and expressed my utter horror at how his comment could be liked by what is meant to be a neutral page advertising the town. All I got in return was a few people agreeing with me, a large barrage of the guys friends joining him spurting more racist things and the town page admin telling me "He has the right to freedom of speech" and the racist bloke in question ended up giving me death threats.

Lesson 1 - Keep mouth closed lol
Lesson 2 - if you live in a racist town, keep mouth closed

I don't think saying 'coloured' is acceptable. Since 'coloured' is a simplistic over view of everyone regardless.

I don't think it's acceptable to use any terms like black/white unless your talking about a colour in general. For example, 'Whiteboard, Blackboard'.

Whats with all these gay/racist/muslim/gay racist muslim threads lately?! Slow news day or something?!

You forgot religious threads in general, popping up all over GD and not really much point to them. Racism exists, crazy religious nuts exist. Now who WON'T be watching the Queens speech?

You get mugged by a black person, when the police person says identify him, you say.......

You have to say skin colour because it helps them identify the person

A Korean friend of mine has a funny tshirt that says "No I am not Chinese". :D

Also isn't 你好 said the same in both Cantonese and Mandarin? (I am rudely assuming you speak at least some form of Chinese :D)
They are both the same when written, but not when spoken.

So you hate the fact they've assumed you're Chinese?
Yep, have come across people who say 'Konichiwa' as well, assuming I'm Japanese. It also annoys me when people say 'they all look the same'. I have been told I look Korean, Malaysian and Thai before. I could be anything, but these randoms on the street don't know what I am so they shouldn't talk random crap to strangers

Would you have had a go at him if he used a more respectable word?

Ahhh yes, this old chestnut. The favourite excuse for the people who either don't want a job, or simply weren't good enough/didn't have good enough qualifications for the job.

You have to say skin colour because it helps them identify the person

But then you're afraid to say the skin colour because you might be seen as racist!

Where does it end?

WTF. It doesn't matter if you were mugged by a white person or a black. All you say is you got mugged. If the person who got mugged was asked to describe them you say 'their skin colour was black'.

You don't go ahead and say they were a blacky or something else as that is just plain and simply wrong. Gosh!!!

No. You don't say you got mugged by a black person though. It doesn't matter what colour their skin is unless you are identifying them.

It's the context that people say these phrases not the content.

lol So hed be racist for acknowledging the skin colour?

People need to harden the **** up.

White/Black/Asian, People shouldn't care what you colour of skin you have.

Being told i'm a white bit of trash a Jock, Haggis Muncher, doesn't faze me the slightest.

Us Manly Skirt Wearing Folks up here in sheep territory tend to find insults toward us funny, thats our attitude towards it.

And calling a Pakistani a **** is no different from call myself a Scot, I just shorter terminology, There's not a hint of rascim in it IMO.

But in the scenario he posted, he IS identifying the person to the police. So of course he'd have to mention anything that could be used to identify that person, the colour of their skin being a pretty big piece of information!
