Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

Maybe I missed it along the thread, but haven't the leaks of the 480 performance we've seen for the 4GB version rather than 8?
Pretty much the same thing. 8GB version will simply allow a slight advantage when running highest texture, draw distance and MSAA settings, plus higher resolutions, though I still think this card is not going to be ideal for 1440p/60fps.

Ah ok...gotta. see that's where I'm hoping for with performance 1440 and 60fps. IF the 480 can deliver that then I'm sold.

Gone up since last week, people were saying £180 inc vat.

Litterally no one has said that.

EDIT: Unless you are talking about the 4GB? In which case the 8GB has always been discussed at around £230-250.

Sorry, they only dropped the price once because of what AMD released. They dropped the price of the 780 because they had the 780ti arriving a week later.

You need your eyes testing.

Nvidia has slashed the price of products with its newest GTX 260 and 280 graphics processors only a few weeks after it launched the chips, in response to stiffer competition from Advanced Micro Devices' ATI unit.

Nvidia said Sunday night that the GeForce GTX 280 is now available for $499 and the GTX 260 for $299. The high-end GTX 280 was originally $649, while the 260 was priced previously at $399. Both products were rolled out less than a month ago.

Nvidia's graphics boards are now more in line with ATI's newest offerings. At $299, the GTX 260 price now matches that of ATI's comparable HD 4870.

There's more to come from ATI too. Later this quarter, ATI is expected to launch the 4870 X2, which combines two chips on one board. This will be ATI's high-end offering for the enthusiast gaming market. The lower $499 price for Nvidia's high-end GTX 280 should bring it close to 4870 X2 pricing.

For the GTX 780 on the other hand, this is a rapid response for NVIDIA, coming just days after the launch of the Radeon R9 290X. The 290X, its $550 price tag, and its superior performance unquestionably left NVIDIA with little choice but to cut prices. But we had not been expecting NVIDA to drop the GTX 780 below $500, even with 290X’s performance advantage. The end result is that now 290X is the more expensive part by 10% (or $50), which coincidentally is also the 290X’s performance advantage. This puts the two cards on equal footing on the price/performance continuum with NVIDIA’s kicker – their superior build quality and cooling performance – remaining. Furthermore we were also able to confirm with NVIDIA that the metal reference cooler will still be available even after the price cut, so alongside the collection of custom designs we’ve seen the high performance reference blower will still be an option for buyers seeking a quiet blower.

It says it right there.http://www.anandtech.com/show/7465/...-gtx-780770-price-cuts-gtx-780-ti-launch-date

Twice they have dropped it by £100 within a few weeks of launch. When and brought the 4870 and again with the 290x

Although for £100 more I could probably pickup a second hand 980Ti

And for another £50 more you could pick up a 1070. I guess the question is where do you stop with the "just a little more and I could..." and draw the line, as that creep will always lead you to the fastest card on the market in the end. :p

Anyway, I'm surprised that people are surprised. We already knew that the 480 was basically the top end of Polaris, save for a very small possible bump ala the 380 vs 380X. The 490 was always going to be Vega and Vega was never going to be shown here.

I think this is a more powerful argument for new PC builds. You're already spending quite a bit, the argument to spend an extra £50-100 for a better GPU is *very* easy to justify to yourself.

Why I think the 1070 and 1080 are going to sell better to people building a scratch PC than those looking to upgrade.
