Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

No one has said the 8GB is £300 at all... also we still don't know the actual performance, so it could be anything from 390X to 980Ti...
If it is close to 1070 or 980Ti performance why not announce it with a benchmark or two to create some buzz. They've seen the Nvidia offerings so now would be the time to do it otherwise it doesn't make sense

I guess the most optimistic we can be now is max-clocked 480's are close enough to a 1070 to cause price drops of the 1070.

I was hoping the 1070 would start around £300, and be ~£340 for a good partner one.

Because then NV could drop the price right now to deflate that buzz.

Well that's an hour of my life I will never get back, don't think I saw a single game that looked interesting and that dude hosting was an utter womble. The AMD stuff was beyond disappointing, Lisa's delivery was much better but giving out zero specs on the hardware was just utterly fail and then showing Zen running but giving zero indication of performance stats again is fail.

That Alienware backpack thing is also ridiculous, walking around a field like a noddy with that on your back is going to get you mugged and probably locked up.

So much fail in the hour of that I watched, I couldn't stomachs anymore and switched it off.

I have to say the Xbox one was much better, I'm definitely buying Sea of Thieves for PC and Xbone :)

No, it's about AMD not having anything to counter the GTX 1080 with. They just aren't ready yet. Do you honestly think they would put all of this effort into developing a chip, just to release a low-end part? Now, I know they said they wanted to target the lowest VR segment, but that may have been after seeing the first silicon and noticing that it didn't perform as well as they would have hoped (and I really doubt the low-end segment is interested in VR at all). The 290/290x/390/390x/Nano and GTX 970 are already good enough for that, and the prices of these cards would have fallen had AMD announced something competitive. Pretty sure many of us would preferred to have GTX 1070 performance at <£300 rather than 290x performance at £200. Hell they could have just lowered the price of the nano, and voila. There's really no need for the RX 480 if you really think about it.

AMD don't appear to be targeting the likes of us this round and letting NVidia have the top range, whilst AMD go for the mid range. A real shame but they need to try and sell GPUs and if they can mass sell at any level, then I can see what they are doing. It does look like the enthusiast cards will only be from NVidia now and ya gotta pay massively if you want the extra performance.

Which does make sense for AMD. They've tried competing with the higher tier Nvidia cards and even when they outperform the Nvidia counterpart the majority didn't seem to care - Nvidia kept their marketshare.

Looks like they're taking a more sensible approach to attempt taking back some of the market.

Of course.. Until Vega.

Sapphire make fantastic cards, had my 4870 for 4 years no problems, upgraded to a 7870 and its over 4 year old now and still going strong.

i would happily go with sapphire again, my own sapphire 7870 is still going strong. all it needs is the thermal paste being redone since its getting a little warmer more recent regardless of the weather.

I had a Sapphire 6950 Toxic, and a Sapphire 7870, currently have a Sapphire 290 Tri-X, I like their products, normally they have some of the better cooled cards

You mean a £100 drop? I doubt it.

NV has dropped prices by £100 twice now because of what AMD launched.
With the launch of AMD’s new flagship Radeon R9 290X only a couple of days behind us, NVIDIA has wasted surprisingly little time in responding the latest salvo in the unending GPU wars. Intended to coincide with the launch of NVIDIA’s holiday GeForce game bundle, the launch of ShadowPlay (more on that later today), and the final (non-beta) release of GameStream, NVIDIA has rounded out their Monday by announcing a pair of price cuts for their high-end consumer video cards, and set a launch date and a launch price for their recently announced GTX 780 Ti.

First and foremost, both GeForce GTX 780 and GeForce GTX 770 are getting price cuts, effective tomorrow (October 29th). GTX 780 will be reduced by $150 to $499, and meanwhile GTX 770 will be getting smaller $70 trim, bringing the price of that card down to $329.

Nvidia has slashed the price of products with its newest GTX 260 and 280 graphics processors only a few weeks after it launched the chips, in response to stiffer competition from Advanced Micro Devices' ATI unit.

Nvidia said Sunday night that the GeForce GTX 280 is now available for $499 and the GTX 260 for $299. The high-end GTX 280 was originally $649, while the 260 was priced previously at $399. Both products were rolled out less than a month ago.

Nvidia's graphics boards are now more in line with ATI's newest offerings. At $299, the GTX 260 price now matches that of ATI's comparable HD 4870.

There's more to come from ATI too. Later this quarter, ATI is expected to launch the 4870 X2, which combines two chips on one board. This will be ATI's high-end offering for the enthusiast gaming market. The lower $499 price for Nvidia's high-end GTX 280 should bring it close to 4870 X2 pricing.

I doubt the 480 will result in any significant price drops of the 1070 and most likely wont affect the 1080 at all.

The real price drops will definitely be when Vega is announced, and probably the Ti will be announced at the same time.

The point is AMD don't want to see any price drop until they have products on the shelves.

This..

Rule number one always keep the competition thinking. Am not mad that amd don't have big GPU this year to complete with 1080. Tbh they have enough line up and price range covered.

The upgrade needs to be worth it though, so hopefully the 480RX is a little powerhouse and cones in line with a 980ti. That will do me till next year, tbh the 290 will do me till next year it's excellent at 1440p.
