Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

Leaks suggest about 5% above 390X performance, i think that much is probably true.

A bit faster than the 390X (Which is no slouch) for £50 less and half the power; its not bad actually, if it overclocks like the leaks suggest its pretty awesome.

Leaks suggest significantly faster than the 390x, which is what I suspect. I think DX12 performance will improve considerably and also... this is AMD. Performance won't be the same for 6 months then drop off as some refreshed part with slightly higher clocks are prepared, performance will improve significantly.

What is 30% faster than a 390x at launch will be 50% faster before the end of the year probably.

The RX480 looks really good, but after being told about the RX480, a bunch of people pushed the idea that it sucked and as it was only 90W(made up) there had to be a faster core sitting at a higher price point that would be epic. Now that that made up card doesn't exist people are acting like they are left with the **** slower card, rather than thinking, RX 480 is probably the fast card you wanted in the first place and that early leaks are with immature drivers(not compared to 6 months but compared to a launch), early bioses and NDA sneaky lower clocks.

I would put money on there being some situations the RX480 doesn't beat a 390x noticeably, in the same way some times a 980 is absurdly close to a 980ti when it really shouldn't be, but in many situations the RX 480 is going to be significantly faster than a 390x.

Amd could have told use about the 460 and 470 at computex, they had everyone thinking there was gonna be a card above the rx480 at the $300 pricepoint.

Oh well 15 days to go now, until we see how good the 480 is.

We've all seen the charts and realise the truth of the fact that 85% or more gamers buy cards in the $100-300 range.... but unless they are telling us about an epic performance higher cost card it's information that AMD shouldn't be excited about? The literally 100s of millions of gamers who play Dota and other such games and want a $150 card like the RX 460, AMD couldn't and shouldn't address them on Twitter because only enthusiast gamers should be engaged by the company? Only higher end products are news?

Hell, AMD GPUs are primarily about gaming, AMD are heavily into gaming, it was a gaming conference showing off and talking to a bunch of people making games, is it insane to think AMD fans would want to hear about games coming out in the next year. Again what should AMD have said, we're part of this PC gaming show, showing off new games some of which you'll love, some which you wouldn't know about... but it sucks, don't watch it... trust us?

to be honest i am glad there wasn't a 490, because that would have depreciated the X90 range compared to Nvidia, and they already suffered from that during 300/900 series.
now lets just hope AMD has 2 Vega Chips 10 & 11, with 490 being vega 11 with GDDR5X released during Q4 2016 to compete with 1080/1070, then vega 10 Fury/Rage with HBM2 released in 2017
also glad they got rid of the pro/X versions.

What do you mean by depreciated? The x90 series are mid-range cards nowadays, while the fury represents the high-end. Not sure how the release of a gtx 1070 competitor would have done anything negative to the amd brand.

the 290X was faster than the first titan, now it's 970 equivalent ?
AMD needed to reset the performance of their line up, it might seem stupid, but that play a role into shaping the mindset of ppl.

I really hope we get a decent cooled/clocking RX480 8GB with DVI output. Dont want to have to replace my 120Hz monitor or mess around with hit and miss adaptors
:(

The 480 doesnt come with a dvi connector, which is strange for a low cost card.

My dell p2414h has vga,dvi and dp,so i will need to buy a dp cable, unless one comes in gpu box.

I'm afraid we may see different prices after the Brexit vote....if leaving gets more votes the £ will take a big hit against the $.

Already happening just through the possibility. £ has been falling against the dollar more or less since the start of the year and took a bit of a sharp slide yesterday on the basis that the Leave campaign has been edging forward.

If the UK does vote to leave this month, there will be a more significant fall as people want to get out of sterling due to the uncertainty and nigh-certain trade hit on Britain.

Something to be debated in the politics section imho.

As for the RX4x0 series, makes sense from AMD's stand point imho and a smart move by them. Whether I will get a RX480 to replace my R9 290, based upon the performance 'leaks,' I probably will (I'll just be expecting a slightly smoother ride & a slightly cheaper power bill rather than miracles).

Agreed. I can see if we vote leave the pound will plummet, hoepfully only for months until things settle, but expect to pay 10% to 20% more for all pc gear this year.

I can see 1080 FE cards rising to £700 before the end of the year.

Fair enough. We should probably avoid this sparking off a debate in this thread. Was mainly just observing that the pound is already falling, but I'll keep further political commentary off it.

480 is looking very promising, imo.

And it's a very relevant point on what prices we might expect, IMO, but don't want to spark a Brexit debate in our humble lil' Polaris thread :p

I for one, am sitting out buying for the next month to see what the landscape is once the dust settles. No sense in purchasing anything now until all hands are shown. By middle of July, we should have a lot different options and prices in the new (and used) space.

What a load of rubbish. You do know that if the leave win it will take another two years before we fully leave.

But it's a sad day when a person is more worried and a graphic card then their country :(
