Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

Well, if the 480 (and frankly the 1060 too) end up closer to £300 than £200, I'm done with PC gaming.

I mean, what's next? A 560 at £300? An 1150 at £350? It's just madness. We're all being taken for fools.

The reference 470 [EDIT, 480] will be nearer £200 than £300,
Anyway, don;t forget there is this thing called inflation, prices will always increases in numeric terms even if they decrease in real term.

Inflation is one thing, but many people's wages haven't kept pace with it.

And frankly, many, many, many (the majority) won't spend £200+ on a gfx card.

If the 470 is £200 it's game over. Nice knowing you AMD.

So now it looks like AMD are about to do it yet again, the same thing only this time under the "power efficient" banner.

Seriously could you think of a bigger kick in the teeth?

For £250 to £300 on 14nm the least one would reasonably expect is Fury-Nano performance and overclocking to 980TI performance.

that's ^^^^^ a "massive over hype"????
IMO that's little niggling in the back of my mind that says "its AMD, they will #### it up" looks like something that I should have been listening to.

They have some serious work cut out to down play expectations because that is pathetic.

So, the 1060 had better:

  • have Fury-Nano performance at stock
  • overclock all the way up to 980ti performance
  • cost no more than £250
Anything less than that and it's an absolute total disaster, because these are reasonable expectations, right?

1060 over £200 would be taking the mick... it's like the 1070 being well over what the 970 costed at launch. At the mainstream price bracket, every penny counts. The 960 almost wasn't worth it's price due to the competition providing slightly better performance at the same value.

They need to keep these 'mainstream' cards priced below £200. Performance may change, but what people are willing to pay is less likely to change. We saw it with the 1070 where there was plenty of moaning about £350+ prices.

I was actually trying to remind humbug what his standards are for an RX480-priced card. He's willing to go up to £250 for those. I'm worried though that even Nvidia may disappoint him...

I meant 480, not 470.
As for inflation vs earnings, the facts are somewhat different since 2014:
https://www.theguardian.com/business/2016/feb/17/uk-wage-growth-slows-as-employment-rises

I said many people's wages hadn't kept pace with inflation, and if you worked in the public sector, you'd know that already.

A lot of us have had pay freezes lasting years.

e: even the graph in your link backs up my point.

The graph shows that between 2011 and 2015 inflation was higher than wage increases. Only from 2015 onwards did that reverse.

RIP AMD it was fun while it lasted.

You lie :p It hasn't been fun since the days of the Athlon 64 :p

Oh OK, the Barton wasn't bad, and nor was the Athlon-II.

But AMD haven't been fun in any way since 2012. They've released one irrelevant product after another since then.

It is irrelevant what anecdotal experiences you have, that doesn't dictate pricing information.

Form mid 2014 inflation was lower than average earning, that is when the last generation of cards were released (mid 2014 to mid 2015).

Yea the 7 series and 2 series were irrelevant and yet us owners are still loving them while those on the 6 and 7 series nvidia cards have moved on due to them going down hill. The Fury series has been the only let down if you ask me. Amd have made mistakes on launching but in the main there graphics products have been good.

If the 480 is 200 pounds it is game over?

It's 199 dollars + whatever taxes/duty. Seems pretty darn likely that will be the case.

Suggested is $229 for ref 8GB?

I think very much so the rx 480 will be about £200-250 for the 8GB ref model. Custom cards will likely be toward the £250-300 end of that.
