Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

I'd believe yesterday's arkham knight and 3dmark results more than this printed paper since they actually show the screenshots with GPU-z. Those put the 480 at around 980/390X level which is more believable based on it's theoretical performance.

edit: What most people don't realise is that the Zotac 970 OC outperforms a stock 980:

Since the Polish magazine review was done with old drivers I suspect the final result with proper drivers will be a surprise to those who are panning the card right now. The 480 is keeping up with an OC 970 without the review drivers. Interesting.

Wow didnt know the Zotac was that good

Some pepole are not going to like this but....

GTX 970 @ Stock: 48 FPS
@ 1550/1950: 59 FPS.. a 23% increase in FPS, or +11 FPS in this case.
Just a lil wait now to compare.
Could you edit to show the stock wf3 boost/mem clocks, ta.
The stock run was a refrence speed, capped at 1178/1750, out of the box the card is advertised as 1253/1750, it actually runs at 1354/1750.

I'll do both runs in a few minutes, i'm compiling something at the moment.

@ jupiter_man, something very wrong with that slide, overclocked the 970 is faster than the 980 but not by that much on the same settings, there is no way any 970 does 70+ FPS in MLL.

Hi there

Well $239 / 1.45 = £165 x 20% VAT = just shy of £200, yes the plan was to hit £199 with 8G !!! NO CHANCE NOW! :(

But now $239 / 1.31 = £182 x 20% VAT = near as dammit £220.

£20 increase on such a low price part because we left EU, on cards such as 1080 the price increase is simply too saddening.

Come on UK, sort it out, get the pound back upto at least 1.40 your ruining the economy!

Yeah its amazing at min fps. I dont think the 480 will beat its 1fps. :p

Gibbo, just pay the suppliers when the pounds back up :p, or do you really pay them on launch day? Anyhow, looks like its up a tiny bit, 1.33 now. So thats shaved £6 off the £220 you mentioned at 1.31.

Its creeping back up a little today... but not enough

We won't move prices for a 1.32-1.33 movement, we did that our prices would change around 50 times per day. We need to see a stable 1.35 to reduce, then a stable 1.40 to reduce again. That how we operated for the increases, it slipped sub 1.40 we made some small increases hoping it would stabilise, it then hit 1.35 so we increased again and yesterday we had 1.31-1.32 so more increases.

Were now pretty stable unless it goes sub 1.28 or above 1.35 current pricing here to stay. Fingers crossed we see 1.35 tomorrow and it holds.

It is very saddening, we were having record sales, now were shipping the stock and on some lines even seeing losses based on our cost for those items if we pay today, as some of the PO's were raised with a rate of 1.45, now all the bank is giving us is 1.31-1.32. :(

Those who pre-ordered 1080/1070 are jumping up and down, having a party, as they have cards and they have appreciated in value quite a bit. :)

To be honest weren't we all expecting the 8GB to be near £220-250 anyways? If it were to be £200 I am betting the price was placed at £200 because the card isn't as powerful as even the 980's?

Well that's a shame, but thanks for giving us forewarning to soften the blow.

To be fair £220 was what most were expecting anyway (assuming it's 980/390X level).

If it turns out to be basically 970 for £220 though...that will suck...

Shame, £200 for 8GB would have been an instant-buy!

£220 still isn't the £250 that *some* people have been throwing around though

My apparent insane maths and predictions are coming true when it comes to price. I just really hope it doesn't rise even more.

At the lowest current estimate of £220, it's going to cost me essentially €300 with shipping to get a reference card to Ireland :(

Now the card just need to at least match the 390X, or that price to performance is going to look mighty dodgy.

Hmm i just realized. Gibbo just leaked the official 8gb price. :D He wouldnt have specifically stated 239 otherwise.

Tho not really a big deal now as its gone up cos of the exchange rates. But nice to know the official plan was to sell the 8gb cards £199 not £230 ish as most here were thinking.

That is fine, also puts paid to the constant stream of utter bull from certain people in this thread who consistently and repeatedly insisted a starting price of £230 for the card.

Yeah but man I was so mega hyped and excited to bring them at £199 for the cheapest model, it is a real sweet spot, that pricepoint is now unfortunately below our cost. :(

This just in:

AMD DELIVERS ON ITS PROMISE FOR PREMIUM VR EXPERIENCE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Have you been seeing leaks on RX 480 performance that are all over the place?

Did someone send you benchmarks that show it on par with a 980ti, while another posted measurements that show it worse than a 960?

Are you seeing or experiencing irrational behaviour such as claiming "it's the best card ever as long as it's at 970/390 performance", only to suddenly change your mind and say "it's absolute crap if it can't beat a 980/390X decisively"?

This means that RX 480 stock has arrived at retailers in your area, and AMD is delivering the premium VR experience it promised, for just $199, and the best part is: you don't even need VR goggles.

Yes. You read that right: NO VR GOGGLES NEEDED.

The RX 480 incorporates cutting-edge technology which makes it perform as per a user's secret desires and/or fears. When an RX480 is running on a system, users observing it will experience entirely different outcomes depending on their mood or predisposition at any one time.

Proud owner of a new 1070 who needs reassurance after fearing you overpaid? No problem: you will see a terrible card, struggling to reach 30FPS on low settings.

AMD fanboy desiring bragging rights for a century? You will see Project Cars suddenly running with DX12 and the RX480 trashing the (to remain unreleased as it is now pointless) 1080ti.

Mixed feelings? The RX480 will make you insane by switching from RIVA TNT to 1080 performance and temps between a cool 10C to whopping 99C.

AMD stock has jumped 1000% following this news release.... wait, now they tell me it's 99% down and declaring bankruptcy. No, it's really up? HEY! TURN OFF THAT RX 480! CAN'T YOU SEE I'M WORKING HERE?

Cheapest model? even if some are branded asus or gigabyte, they would be all the same price wouldnt they, as theres 0 difference between amd 8gb ref vs asus 8gb ref, the hardware is identical.
