Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

Gibbo, why would you "increase" the prices on your first batch based on the FX move? I thought they were paid for already?

Stock is on 30 day tick/account, so we won't pay for it until mid-end July and no way can we gamble on rate being above what is now, it could recover but it could also go even lower.

End of the day I am sure our price will be competitive in the UK and your free to buy from wherever should you find it cheaper. :)

Less than 8G! :D

220 GBP is not so bad considering. If (perhaps big if) the performance is 390x/980 levels, AMD onto a massive winner here.

Well that depends on how favourably it compares to the custom overclocked 980's that are being sold off cheap now. The 980 clocks very well - if the RX480 doesn't it could find itself a decent bit behind in performance.

Will have to wait and see.

Also, this ~£220 is presumably for the cheapest blower style version as well.

Ok makes sense, thx.

Btw nice ride. I had a 2006 Roush Mustang 420 RE until I needed something bigger to accomodate the family... I loved that car. :)

I'd imagine stock voltage, but as its 14nm process I would be surprised if it responds well to voltage if at all on air cooling to be frank.

Power phase, voltage on air cooling because less important as the nm process gets smaller.

Never knew that, learn something new.
Thanks

Given the cheapest 390 on OCUK is £205 it needs to do better then the 390 too be a good buy. Even if it was sold at the ideal £199 price thats still almost no difference.

Well on the plus side 1.35 $:£ may not be far off as we are back up to 1.33 now from the 1.31 low. This being the case maybe we will see Gibbo get to offer his golden 199 card after all :)

Why add such big freakin cooler that doubles the length of the card if it doesn't oc that well ? Stupid choice this should have had nano type cooler

How can it have nano size? You do realise that the nano was so small because of HBM making the Pcb much smaller.
Without that new tech GPU can't become smaller with this amount of power.

The cooler is mostly empty except for the spinning bit and a small-medium black of alu with some fins. Rest is just empty. Bad cooler design for sure, could have had more metal in like some heatpipes or more alu with fins along the card instead of just over the gpu part. If its not going to clock much i bet they could have got away with a smaller cooler for similar cooling ability. I think the cooler they have (if performance and cooling is to be believed at leaks) is to make it look better than it really was.

4GB @1440p is borderline pushing it in some games.

Unless your running at >30fps with all ultra settings and 16x masaa then yeah. But settings will be adjusted accordingly with a single 480.

I've had 4gb 980's in SLI on release and they never ran out even at 4K so I know it can be done.

yeah true if you look at the back picture most of the blower fan hangs over the back. They could have made the cooler a lot smaller. I guess its down to cost its a design previously used so saved them money over designing a totally new cooler.

Look at the back of the card u ll see that actual card is way smaller than it is with that added cooler. I believe that is fan segment of cooler that protrudes from the back which adds to the length
