Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

No one is saying DX11 is going away, it will probably never go away, but the console gaming industry is larger than the PC gaming industry....

If its pushed on consoles it will adopt over to PC, AMD will have an inherent leading edge in anything Microsoft pushes from Xbox to PC, fact.

Microsoft are keen to get back into PC gaming, fact.

Microsoft will be offering a lot of their top tier games with a free PC copy, fact.

Microsoft are pushing DX12 hard, Microsoft also want to get back into PC gaming, they will push DX12 and back it financially to get it to deliver.

Didn't know Chris Evans was into Graphics cards as well as cars :)

well either way, there's only a few hours left to wait, then we can start to have a real opinion of whether the card is worth the investment or not! Been following this thread now for a while, so I'm excited!

Well in the end its like the people saying buy a GTX970 3.5GB+0.5GB and GTX980 4GB . The GTX970 will at best cost the same(or be more) than an RX480 4GB which is most likely better in DX12 and around the same in DX11,and that is assuming it only matches a GTX970.

If it gets close to a R9 390X,then why all the GTX970 and GTX980 talk??

Even in the worst case scenario, why bother with a GTX970 now for £200+ unless it is much faster??
Not disagreeing with that bit at all.

Even recommended a 480 over a 970 earlier.

Consoles have always had low level API's.

And it's a far different situation developing to a low level on fixed, closed hardware than it is for PC with its endless multitudes of possible configurations. It's the whole reason we haven't had a low level API on PC til now.

It's still quite ambitious and we probably wont reap the real benefits of it for a while. Most early DX12 implementations will likely only provide minor benefits at most. Microsoft's UWP titles will be DX12 largely out of convenience, and even then, we've seen that getting DX12 titles to run on PC well is not necessarily a trivial task.

Wanted to get this info out. Seems I infringed forum rules before about competitors when I did so I'll take that bit out, but it seems there's 2 different XFX reference cards for the 480 with different clocks. 1288 and factory OC 1328. Everything else looked the same. Slightly different model numbers.

 The MODS are in stasi mode today watch out

Warnings have been posted and ignored, so thread is now being closely watched.

People keep breaking the rules, then they will keep being reported and dealt with.

Seems people cannot understand rules, if they are broken any more today, I shall inform the Don's to move to zero tolerance and start handing out 48hr suspensions on sight, zero warnings!

ZERO TOLERANCE!

:)

Looking at the slide deck, there are some very nice features, especially for long term use. The voltage callibration/adaptive ageing compensation etc. stuff looks like it will be a godsend for system builders who want super reliable cards.

This is a system builders dream. Decent pace, small, efficient, and packed with features to stay relevant and reliable long term.

Enthusiasts who change cards frequently do not look to be the target audience.
