Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

Wouldn't it be right in-between the 480 and 1070 price point which is currently absent of a current gen card? I'm betting a lot of people have already compromised by going with either the 480 or 1070, after being told that this would be the entire Polaris line-up.

a lot of people would trade up, take a small hit for more performance, Enthusiasts dont mind spending a little more money for more performance.

Do you folks reckon the 480 will fit in PCIE1? :)

I've got about 22cm max card length due to USB3 header on the board in front of the fans you can see. Think it may foul the DIMM slots though?

Considering 480's aren't even officially for sale yet, there shouldn't be anybody actually committed to buying one yet.

Would laugh a lot if there is a wild card 490 also being announced/released today with Polaris and Vega reserved for other cards, and Gibbo sitting on a pile of them.

Would have been the ultimate misinformation campaign thats obviously got Nvidis guessing with the sudden 1060 move.

Doubt they would manage to keep it so quiet though unless it was superlastminute delivery to vendors...

It would make the 4850/4870 twitter from AMD make more sense though!

Well we shall see if consumers are more interested in saving £10 from their annual energy bill, or getting more bang for their buck.

I have a feeling bang for buck still reigns supreme in the minds of most consumers, myself included.

Yep. That's how it goes. 970/390 performance for the RX 480 isn't a bad thing (it's what I expected), but at over £200 it is. It barely improves the price to performance, which is the major goal of each new GPU die shrink. Or at least AMD claimed it so with Polaris.

And that's my big complaint with this all so far. For a 380 replacement, it sure is far from 380 prices. The same complaints were made of the 1070, far in excess of 970 prices despite being a replacement for it makes it seem like a 980 replacement instead. Similarly, this will seem like a 390 (or 480X if stretching it) replacement for it's price. Prices of all old GPUs have dropped significantly except the actual cards this will be replacing R9 380 prices have barely changed and that's not good.

As I've said before, now that we can get 390s and 970 (non-reference versions too) for close to £200, there is little point paying more than £220 for an AIB 8GB RX 480. And Unlike AMD, Nvidia don't have anything new below the 1070s price point so they'll be keeping their Maxwell GPUs around, at least until the GTX 1060 lands.

I could be wrong... and honestly I want to be wrong. But I know I won't be. Gibbo even said the 8GB won't be below £200 and when asked about 4GB, all he says is "<8GB price". Some people blame it on politics... you're also forgetting that UK has gotten shafted on the Nvidia 1000 series when that launched too (with stronger GBP).

All that said... we'll get conclusive numbers today. Me, I'm prepared for disappointment (my expectations have always been 970/390 at 390 prices). So not much point in specultion and such. I'll start work when the NDA lifts, perfect. I can even read through the aftermath (some people being upset and others not) when I get back home this evening. I'm just glad I don't plan on buying a <£200 GPU anytime soon (currently the options don't look great).

Forza Apex = DX12

My 970 can do 1440p60 on max settings in that game. Are you sure it's supposed to be DX12 (cos I shouldn't be doing that great on DX12)? Or is it just optimised very well?

Dont think thats going to happen, i reckon they will release the RX 480 first and then if RX 490 is Polaris, announce it or just release it in a few weeks / month, if its baby Vega then its either coming in the rumored October, or will be next year....

I cant see AMD letting Nvidia have the entire high end market for that long though... i think something sneaky is going on.

:( and I get a point for indirectly mentioning US prices which are ranging from £180-280.

I dont think any user would order their card directly from US with the current ex rate then pay VAT on top...

please read the context of the message . Hope the price range was a help to forum users to gain price floating points across the world.

If you've got an issue with this please take it to the forum content discussion subforum. Saying that RX480s are available for $X price is one thing, stating that they are available at Retailer Z for $Y price is against the rules.

Don't assume that everyone who could potentially order from OcUK is in the UK, afaik OcUK ship globally.

Hah that would be great, but sadly won't happen. RX 490 would have been the perfect card. :(

Dx12 is future get over it, just cause we don't have many games right doesn't mean in near future it won't be crawling with games that support it. So why should ppl invest in old tech when clearly amd ones gonna last longer as seen in previous gens ?

not guaranteed. look at all the big games on DX10 :p oh thats right there wasnt any.or literally any which made it worth while to upgrade.

i haven't seen one game yet that would make me want dx12.

which is odd as its not that new now and there hasnt been any real buzz about the big games saying and we using dx12. which would have been the case seeing as most big triple aaa games take 2-3 years to develop.

look here there is literally nothing.its marketing hype !

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_games_with_DirectX_12_support its dx10 all over again.

It will be the future at some point, that's why there is a 490 on the way to counter 1070-1080. It took a while before games made DX11 shine, rather that just using some features.
