Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

I can't help but feel it's too little too late. I mean those who game at 1080p at the moment will pass on this, so who does this card cater for? Also a card is only as good as its drivers, lets hope AMD have decent ones.

You can talk for your self I need to replace my 280x and this is perfect for the price.

Not sure this is the case...

As I posted above, I am looking at a new card end of July time. A budget of £200 and want to have a card to play BF4 at ultra and decent settings at 1080 and also ready my PC for BF1.

This card I think will shake up the market, and as others have said bring PC gaming more mainstream as it will allow people to build PC's at not too far off console prices on release prices which in the long term can only be a good thing?

This card wont let you play BF1 at Ultra settings at 1080. It's good for current games but for future proofing I'd stay away. AMD have done well to get such performance for £230, if only they'd done it sooner.

mmm, interesting, but crossfire required to hit VR specs. That is the damp squid as it never works properly in my years of AMD experience as many games do not play well with dual cards. SLI never worked properly either.

After 3 years of messing, I just gave up with dual cards.

Clever marketing by AMD to mention VR, but I personally would not even bother if you need 2 of them.

AoTS benchmarks for crossfire 480 vs 1080 @ 1440P. The 480's running at only 50% scaling too. Amazing for a cheap gpu.

480 crossfire 51fps Average

1080 50.9 fps Average

At 50% scaling it means a single 480 will be about 34 fps @1440P crazy settings. How does that compare with other gpu's?
I may well go for 2 of these.

What's power consumption of 4gb vs 8gb like? Or is it just higher density chips so nearly identical?

Just wondering if it uses extra power could that be put to better use OCing the core instead of powering extra memory

Don't see why it'd affect the 1070 or 1080 at all. The 1080 is a card for enthusiasts... If you bought that and you're now interested in the 480, something is wrong with your finance management.

Also I can't see the 480 getting close to the 1070. Dual 480s are what seems to be interesting when comparing to the new NVIDIA cards though!

Interesting price. If the conversion into £ is decent enough then it should be a good boost to replace my GTX780 at 1440p

Some nice HQ images for you.

Thanks for the images.

No DVI on AMD's latest generation as well then?

Seems like a bit of missed opportunity given the expected price point - e.g. I'm sure there are still people out there with 1080P VGA only screens, or multimonitor setups where only 2 need DVI or VGA.

Other than that seems like a great price, if it delivers on performance.

Interested to see some benchmarks from somewhere else. Hopefully the $ to £ conversion isn't too bad.

Looking for a gpu to help me push to 1440p in the next year or so.

I'll be honest, people are very suprised at the pricing of this card... when in reality they shouldn't be. This is pretty much the pricing of the previous R9 380 cards. If anything, this pricing is what was expected.

Maybe so but I imagine a lot of people were worried that AMD would overcharge as Nvidia have and are pleasantly surprised that AMD didn't, at least with this card. Keeping the price fair is the smart move as it has the potential to sell like Bovril does at a football match on a cold day.

There's HDMI so the people who need dvi can just use a HDMI to DVI adapter.
