Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

Lets be honest, if these cards are any good they will be gouged to death. Don't think you'll be getting close to 980 performance for £150. Not going to happen.

AMD are not rushing the launch like Nvidia did with GP104, there will be plenty of stock at launch. So there will not be as much if any gouging compared to the 1070 and 1080.

How do you know how much stock there will be? Do you work for AMD?

i hope it is true but i really doubt it.. We are getting the shaft here in the EU whenever retailers have an opportunity to do so.

Do you really think AMD have any choice in the matter when they've made their distribution 100% dependent on external retailers?

Yes. Yes they do. They have huge say in what happens with both price and anything else to do with the card. I dare say the contracts will be lengthy and legal but AMD will have a large say in what happens with their cards. For example a partner can't stick profanity or nude graphics on a card that caries AMDs name. Nor can they charge £10000 for it. AMDs name is at risk here not just MSI or whoever.

Manufacturers cant fix pricing, it is completely against the law in many countries these days.
They can advertise an MSRP, but what retailers charge is entirely up to them, the only way they can affect pricing would be to flood the market with product so that no retailer can get away with trying to bump the price up because theyre one of the few with stock.

Here's what an AMD employee had to say on pricing:

"We do not set separate prices for different regions. We have one price in US dollars, but once the chip leaves our hands, or the board leaves the hands of our AIBs, we cannot account for weak currencies, local vendor pricing, or any tax/import fees levied by foreign governments. Collectively those things we can't control are what you see on the shelf."

ofc they do have a choice, and they have control, AIBs comptetition and retailers competition takes care of that, the only key point is stock, as long as they dont run out of stock, price for reference and basic custom from exlusive AIBs like sapphire, xfx powercolor will stay at msrp.

best not mention the pricing agreement logitech made with ocuk in 2014 right before it kicked off between the two companies, then :p

We agree on pricing and I phased in the whole range as the ONLY online retail partner for the brand. Currys and PC World were the retail partner.

The agreement we made was to uphold our price points and leave them in line with Logitech's own RRPs. there was also an agreement stating specifically that I would not alter my pricing without prior consent from Logitech.

Oh yeah baby

I found myself suddenly interested in this card. AMD here I come, it has been a while ... that card better be good!

I'm starting to doubt that the rx 480 is going to be any good after seeing the prices for the gtx 1070s. Pretty sure nvidia already knows how it is going to perform and are reacting accordingly. Hope I am wrong, but I have a feeling that even att £200 it is going to be tough sale.

Apologies if posted, etc.

€269 for the 8GB 480 (in Germany)

Wonder if we'll get a 490 for €400 or under?

Lol what?? They are cards aimed at totally different markets.... 480 will compete with the 1060 not the 1070..

The 1070 like the 1080 are overpriced cards, the 480 is priced correctly for the market it's aimed at.
