Rafa deserves the chance to overachieve with Liverpool again

Regardless of your own opinion of the players, do you actually get the point? That being that Benitez has been constrained compared to the very top sides and has had to generate much of the income from sales. It has been very rare that he has been in a position to splash £20 mill plus on a player. It could be argued that Liverpool have overachieved given those constraints and that we are actually performing now to the level that reflects the investment!

I'm an Arsenal fan, I understand the whole generating transfer funds from well .. nowhere

But why are they wrong?

They are wrong because they are wrong.

I've never seen anywhere Liverpool (or others but we are talking about Liverpool here) be anywhere near that much.

Every single figure I've seen has been about £230 ish million.

Is it any coincidence that the progression seems to have stopped this summer? Look at the transfer activity above for this year and it might explain why.

Look at our net spend over the past 2 years!

According to those figures he had a net spend of over FIFTY MILLION POUNDS in the previous 2 seasons though - some might argue that a manager who is given that much cash to play with should already have started to shape a squad and shouldn't need to keep spending huge amounts each year (bearing in mind he had a net spend of over thirty million in the two previous seasons, i.e. both the time and money to lay the foundations).

Compare those figures with say Arsene Wenger over the same period, he's actually made a PROFIT on transfers since Benitez took over! Now I'm not saying that Arsenal have a better squad than 2004, the quality has arguably dropped a little, but the point is that I don't think it is fair to expect that a manager should be getting £15m+ NET to spend year after year after year. There comes a point where you have to say OK, you've been backed in the transfer market and now we want to see something on the pitch for all that money. Surely you shouldn't need swathes more cash.

Also making profits on player sales is all well and good if they deliver the goods on the pitch during their time at the club (say, Crouch), but remember they've been picking up millions in wages too. So spending money simply to tread water doesn't really cut it.

Edit: moving back on topic, Liverpool traditionally don't sack managers, so I think it's highly unlikely he'll get the boot until the summer at the earliest.

How about 86 points in one season, no team has ever gained 86 points in the premiership without winning it.

No other Liverpool manager has achieved 86 points in one season.

In fact, excluding this seasons poor performance, they have had a good return for 'all that money'. (which actually isnt all that much when you look at net spend.

People talk about over achieving as if its some sort of weird voodoo.

Could it possibly be that when a team continually over achieves, that them manager may be having a positive effect?

I am not going to harp on cos i could be here all day, and most people spouting about lfc on here seem to be regurgitating sky sports garbage.

I thought that the following may be of interest to some of you and even raise an eyebrow or 2! I can't take the credit for it though as I have shamelessly copied from a Liverpool forum. The comments in relation to the individual players are not mine, they belong to the original poster.

Total Net Spend: £83,876,000

So, that’s a total spend of just over £83m in 5 years at the club. An average of £16.6m a year.

The vast majority of his signings have been sold at profit, or if still at the club, are worth a lot more than we paid for them. Exceptions being Babel and Dossena, but we’ll still get decent fees for them when sold as they’re full internationals.

A lot of the signings above have been stepping stones in rebuilding the squad, gradually improving it by replacing players with better ones. Our league positions over the past 5 years and the improvement in our league positions and points totals show the progression.

2004/05: Finished 5th – 58 pts
2005/06: Finished 3rd – 82 pts
2006/07: Finished 3rd – 68 pts
2007/08: Finished 4th – 76 pts
2008/09: Finished 2nd – 86 pts

Is it any coincidence that the progression seems to have stopped this summer? Look at the transfer activity above for this year and it might explain why.

Look at our net spend over the past 2 years!

We have a wage bill that is the 5th highest in the league. We can’t afford to pay players £70,000 to be sat on the bench like United and Chelsea can.

Rafa Benitez’ record with signings at the top end of the market is nothing short of brilliant. Robbie Keane being the only flop, but he was sold 6 months later and only a small financial hit taken on that mistake. Rick Parry agreed the fee for buying him in the first place, and common knowledge Rafa wasn’t happy with it; feeling it was far too high.

Where has this myth come from that he’s wasted money on ****e players? Have a look through the lists above and try to point them out. There isn’t many.

The ones that haven’t worked out he’s moved on, and not very often has he made a financial loss on them.

The squad is now worth a hell of a lot more than the one he inherited, and that £83m net spend over 5 years is easily offset by the increased value of the squad. He’d recoup nearly all of that through the sale of Torres alone!

He’s worked absolute wonders with the money he’s had to spend. Then take into account the massive amounts of money he’s self generated by reaching the latter stages of the CL every season. Two final appearances, one win. That £83m he’s spent he’s earned the right to spend.

And when comparing it to what United have spent in the same period is flawed, as they already had a title winning squad and all the foundations in place. They weren’t rebuilding from scratch like we were. It also doesn’t take into account their massive wage bill.

When comparing to Chelsea, they spent all their money before Rafa came to the club and just topping up an already established squad.

Man City have spent more than double in the past 12 months than Rafa Benitez has in his 5 year reign.

Do some people still want to get rid of him? If so, you’ve been listening to Andy Gray and Richard Keys for too much and unable to look at the facts yourself to form an opinion.

Every manager makes tactical mistakes. Every manager makes mistakes in the transfer market. Despite what the press seem to think; Rafael Benitez appears to make less mistakes than most.

We’re expected to win the league and European Cup on a budget and wage bill that is entitled to finish 4th or 5th in the league. We’ve been overachieving under Rafael Benitez, not underachieving.

I’m not even going to mention the environment he’s working in under them two clowns.

You’ll only miss him when he’s gone…."

Moan moan whine whine

Out of the 26 trophies potentially in the cabinet since his arrival, he won the champions league on penalties against a Milan side with an average age older than god and the FA Cup against a distinctly mediocre West Ham in 2006 again on penalties.

So despite all the tosh about not having any money, the facts you present shoot you in the foot as the money has been there. The facht is that at the very highest level he has had the money along with Chelsea and Utd.

I hate using Chelsea as an example but they bought big under RA to start with but they are at a stage whereby they need to bring in 1 or 2 players to compliment the squad, surely The Spanish Waiter could have built a base by now.

But I guess it's all about 'progression' under Rafa

Are you ignoring the not so mediocre teams they beat to get to these finals?

you also forgot that we got to the CL final AGAIN knocking out Chelsea and Barcelona, and had to get passed the pre-qualification rounds.

The facht is that at the very highest level he has had the money along with Chelsea and Utd.

Simply not true. Since the american takeover, the ambitions of the owners have been about making money, not winning things. As long as we achive a CL qualification spot, the owners will consider job done. They will invest the minimum to try to secure this.

Man Utd and Chelsea already had prem winning squads with fantastic credentials, way before Rafa's arrival. So they needed far less rebuilding than the squad Rafa inherited.

There's no doubt he was instrumental in Alonso leaving but we wouldn't have got anywhere near as much for him if he hadn't upped his game and played for a move last season. IIRC both Arsenal and Juventus only offered £14 million the year before

You got 30million, it had NOTHING to do with the players value, it had EVERYTHING to do with Real Madrid getting a lot of stick for not having enough Spanish players in the side and a lot of stick for not being good enough and making themselves a target for being held hostage for the cost.

If Real Madrid hadn't wanted him, he'd likely have left for less than was offered last year for him. Ok he took advantage, any manager would have, take off th2 15-20mil overspend on him and Rafa's net spend for the transfer window looks significantly different.

Yes he's taken advantage of other managers awful decisions, Sissoko wasn't worth what you sold him for, neither was Crouch, Alonso or a bunch others. The ONLY area I give him credit for is getting decent cash on players when he sells, but thats mostly down to other managers being stupid, than Benitez being somehow brilliant.

Until he got injured he was. Awesome going forward and rock solid at the back. Since his injury not so much.

Thats just laughable, 99% of the league doesn't employ 2 right wingers in a team, meaning the single team I've seen to do so has basically a full extra player attacking a defence completely not used to it. He's not bad going forwards, its the fact no one set up to actually defend against two fast right wingers that makes him so effective, its also what makes Liverpool so laughably bad defensively with him in the side, Rock solid at the back, really?

He was never in position, in every single game he was constantly the weak link in the back, and with that back 4 at the moment thats a pretty big accomplishment. Truly awful defensively, if he stopped going forwards as much to be better defensively, shockingly, he'd become less effective going forward. LIkewise, doesn't Insua have more assists than Johnson(read that somewhere else, could be wrong.

Lets be clear, Johnson in the league has 2 goals 3 assists, INsua has 4. He scored and got assists against the Giants that are, Stoke, Burnley(they were away, we all know how good they are away from home), Bolton, and then the only top half team single assist against spurs, in a game you lost.

He hasn't gotten an assist OR a goal since September 12th, offensively he had a few quick good games, and smeg all since, defensively he's been woeful since day one. Can you remember how many players upon joining a new club go through a burst of good form, before getting crap again. SWP, when he started at City, both times, and Chelsea, utter crap inbetween. Adebayor, started off great, been useless since, and dozens and dozens of other players do the same.

Insua's gotten 4 assists, one against Villa, the rest against poo, but most Liverpool fans rate him as utterly useless also, he's only had a single assist since September.

Simply not true.

Rafa has spent the best part of £230 million. For that much money he should have been able to craft a squad, not just a first eleven imo.

Rafa has done very well selling on players, but his player turnover is sky high.

I don't want to make you look stupid, you manage that yourself, but if you actually checked the figures in all 3 links you'd actually find that the Mail and the link I posted claim we've spent £229m, it's the 3rd link (which I've claimed to be wrong) which has different figures :p

Anyway, continue with your jibber :)

well, far be it from me to argue with you fact master, but there is nearly six months between those figures.

I agree to an extent, but selling on players at a profit, seems to be the where the bulk of the re-investment comes from, which gives an unfortunate slant to the amount of the players though the door.

As for Net Spend...guess how many million our net spend was this year?

His high turnover of players just says to me he's not buying well and is being forced to sell them on. There is a difference between selling a good player for over the top money and selling average players off because they're not good enough. Rafa does the latter too often.

He's had money, he's not spent it well.

Liverpool fans can place the blame at the owners for not giving Rafa money, but he's had a lot of money already.

Baz says they are wrong because they make rafa look bad dont post them again. Only baz knows whats going on at pool and he says rafa hasnt spent anywhere near that much.

The may be right over a 5 year period, but Liverpool have been progressing over that 5 years, hence the record point score last year.

The problem has been this season, lack of investment, injuries and poor form from some of the regulars...it happens.

Good thing is Liverpool fans know and understand this. As per usual they will get behind the manager and not jump on the media sensationalism, which don't seem to be able to shift papers, unless they can conjure up some drama.

If you doubt this, just wait and see the support and banners given to Rafa prior to the spurs game tomorrow.
