Rafa deserves the chance to overachieve with Liverpool again

Someone forgetting that Wenger has won some domestic honours?

Premier League (3): 1997–98, 2001–02, 2003–04
FA Cup (4): 1997–98, 2001–02, 2002–03, 2004–05

Maybe an exaggeration but Rafa's inability to know whether a player can actually play football or not before he buys them is very, very worrying considering his profession.

Imagine if Rafa didn't have the £20m bombs to spend on Torres and Mascherano etc. and had to spend sensibly and buy £5m players then this team would be scarily bad, as nearly every one of his smaller buys have been disasters.

It's strange how people seem to ignore the amount clubs spend on wages when they look at how much a manager spends.

We keep being told how well Wenger's done on such a tight budget (and he has done well before somebody starts crying!) but when you consider that Arsenal's wage bill is £12m per season more than Liverpool's and £27m more than the next team on the list (it was Newcastle (from the last set of recorded figures)) then it does explain where Arsenal's money is going.

Yeah because Arsenal have a squad packed with very promising players who expect better wages than some of Liverpool's back-ups due to a bridge in quality between them. You buy top players, they expect decent money. You buy the players Rafa buys and they wonder what the hell they did to play at Anfield and will take any wage offer they're given :p

Also, Arsenal have given 15 players new contracts over the last 12 months I think (could be a bit out there) and so almost the entire squad is on new, good contracts as the club want to keep this squad at the club for the next 5 years or so.

But we're constantly being told that Arsenal are buying players and paying their wages with magic beans :p

and those terrible players Rafa's signed have finished above your top players more often than not since he's been manager of Liverpool ;)

:) Not wanting to argue about anything. I just said Rafa would struggle on a tiny budget, he's struggled on a monumental one so I thought what I said made sense.

The last few years have been an obvious transitional phase for Arsenal, if they haven't won anything in 5 years from now I'm happy to concede I over-rate the team and the manager. Pretty sure they'll have a good period though now everything is in place

Yea a monumental budget of ~£13m per season (average since he's taken over), a whole £1m per season more than you're spending on wages than us ;)

Meh, Arsene has said many, many times in the media that because Arsenal pay their players through legitimate channels and report their wages in full they always appear near the top of the wages lists, because almost every other club in the league doesn't report their full wage bills.

Arsenal's wages can't be THAT high, Gallas is the only player on £100k (even RvP and Fabregas don't really earn huge money at £80kish) and half of the team are little boys. I can't imagine they're particularly high myself

I think it's widely reported that Arsenal miss out on a lot of players due to their very rigid wage structure and refusal to pay silly wages

Arsenal's wage figures that are publish include everyone employed by the club, so the Cesc, Wenger, down to the tea lady in the board room. So those wages are for 374 people, + 879 temp staff on matchdays. I'm not sure if the others no or not.

A couple of the high earners from those figures will have left, and in reality Arsenal wage bill is totally manageable and in line with the revenue stream the club creates.

Wages published in every clubs accounts will include everybody employed by the club.

I'm guessing you've got a young promising tea lady and ours is **** though? :p

To imply that Arsenals players somehow receive signing on fees / wages etc without utilising tax AVOIDANCE schemes is very very naive.

Fixed.

Anyone who earns huge sums of money, will pay the least tax they can, and have the means to use the loops that exist.

Well, its actually tax evasion isnt it, because if it was tax avoidance they wouldn't be being asked to pay it back. I'm sure a lot of clubs do employ tax avoidance techniques though, if they aren't their accountants should be fired.

I imagine most players try some kind of relief but that's understandable, the tax generated from the premier league is probably significant, and the players hardly get anything back from the system for their cash (private medical care, never on the dole etc.), so I can understand their frustration a little.

Would you be happy to see your pay slip every week and see £10,000 - £50,000 or so going to the tax man? It'd hurt me inside
