As a United supporter it's extremely hard to say I'd have anyone over Rooney (Ronaldo & Messi included) but when fit Torres simply is the best striker in the world

He's got everything as well as the knack that not many strikers in the world past and present have of being able to score against anyone! You look at Ruud's record for us, he barely had any goals against Arsenal or Liverpool, likewise Rooney against Liverpool but Torres who does he have a bad record against? He's scored shed loads against Chelsea, 3 or 4 against Arsenal and a couple against us, from memory only Henry in recent years can claim to have a good record against all of the big teams

74 is league appearances, I was looking at a different part of the page, not entirely sure why that is funny

Appearances is important for any player, and I'm sorry but that amount is a lot.

Oh, I thought we were doing total appearances.

In league appearances its

Rooney - 84
Torres - 74

Both of them together up front would be immense. :D

Indeed it would. Rooney is a great forward, Torres is also a great forward. Would love to see them play up front together. Regardless of who I do or do not support. I've never been into this bs tribal rubbish about which shirt a person wears, if I like a player and rate him, then I like a player and rate him regardless of which shirt he wears.

As both Rooney and Torres have great ability, both aerial and on the ground, and both are good at assisting as well as scoring. I'd be very interested to see them paired.

Do the figures even take into account the number of times Torres has played from the start?

I'd say number of starts would be a fairer comparison as it seems torres would rack up a fair few appearances from coming off the bench?

Torres in his first season was sublime to watch, I don't think he can stand up to the premiership though.

I wouldnt imagine they do, an appearance is technically an appearance, be it 90 mins or 1 min, so I imagine it includes all the subs too. Conversely of course it also doesnt take into account any games where the person was substituted.

I imagine a more accurate figure would be total minutes played, but at that stage its starting to get all a touch semantic :)

Still put Ronney above him, (just)
Torres does not defend as does rooney.

When he goes back to Spain next season, he may do better :)

For stats, Rooney 49 goals, 25 assists, 20 yellows and circa 6700minutes, 75 full games worth of minutes.

Torres is 51 goals, 10 assists, 10 yellows around 5500 minutes, 64 full games just about.

Personally as a pure finisher Eto'o's years and years at the top isn't beaten by a single great year by Torres or Rooney, he's consistantly had a frankly sickening goals to games ratio that career wise makes Torres and Rooney look like ickle children in comparison.

Couldn't tell you how well Eto'o has been doing for Inter though, far too painfully boring a league to watch week in week out.

I'd take Rooney over Torres though as frankly if he'd been played as the furthest forward striker over the time Torres had been in England, he'd likely have scored quite a few more games.

In terms of minutes/games, Rooney's played 10-11 more full games really, though in terms of minutes and appearances that probably add's up to a good 14-15 more "normal" appearances playing 70+ minutes. Its not like Rooney hasn't gotten quite a few injuries either, very few strikers play every minute of every game.

Having a look around Berbatov has played 7000 minutes over the same time, considering he's WAY down on minutes for this year he's about as ever present as Anelka in terms of injury, whose played 7500 minutes.

Stats wise, across 2.66 seasons Torres hasn't missed quite as much as most people think. Though Torres is almost 2000 minutes down on Anelka, which is a low-average season to some strikers, Rooney's a far more normal number of minutes across the same time and he's only missed about 1/3 of a season across his whole time here.

He will be sacked in the summer, when Liverpool finish 6th or 7th.

Must admit 6th or 7th is looking likely. Before the season started I predicted we would finish 5th this year, but now I'm not so sure and looking at the remaining fixtures I think it could well be as low as 7th.

you have had a good run of success ie over 40 years. It may be very difficult to get back, and I speak from experience !!

Yup these things happen, you get peaks and troughs. Let us not forget that Man Utd went 26 years without winning the league and they seem to have turned out pretty good currently, so it happens to the best of teams :)

Always hope on the horizon.

will cost Liverpool £16m to sack him, so unless someone like Juve actually hire him directly I cant see a direct sacking taking place (with or without this rumoured £100m investment)

The 100 mill investment that might or might not happen is what is requried to pay RBS as part of the re-financing the 2 leeches managed to get last time round.

Edit for clarity - IIRC, as part of the refinancing deal the 'owners' of the club have to pay up around 100 mill by July'ish as the overall debt has to be decreased by this date.
