#Random Linux

KDE Neon has updates that want a reboot literally every day. Sure I can just update when I want to (same as windows), but it objectively is not any less faff than Windows, at least that only want a reboot every week or so.

You're not comparing Apples to Apples there though, you've chosen something which includes the "latest updates as soon as the're available" - picture entering the Windows Insider/Developer OS.

Meanwhile, my Debian install has an update once every now and then, and even that is mostly security/non Debian apps. This is what is good about Linux, is that there's so much choice. I would never rock something which prioritises cutting-edge or rolling releases these days.

This.

Apologies to selectively quote you. But this is the nub of the point to be made. If you don't like how something is done, use something else. Or, (because it's Linux) create your own (though that's a lot of effort, and there's always smarter cookies in the playground who'll do that for you ;) )

Personally, I run LTS stable distributions and also rolling releases. Horses for courses, dependent upon function and how much time/interest I want to invest in that function, running a rolling release you expect updates (which may require a reboot), a stable release (LTS) much less so.

Further edit - if you haven't an issue, why update? If it ain't broke don't fix it. This isn't your phone, where you HAVE to update.

Installed Bazzite this afternoon. Logged into Steam, downloaded a game, checked compatibility was Proton (I left it on Experimental) and fired it up. It worked!

I'm slowly working my way towards a linux only setup on my devices. So far my laptop has been running Mint 22.1 for the past few months and it's been great for the little bit of use it gets.
My desktop doesn't get as much use as it used to. Bit of gaming or listening to music and general web guff is all I do these days.
Bazzite looks cool.
I think we should have a "Linux Gaming" section or something.
Next up is the media server ... Truenas? probably. Ashamed to admit I've been using Windows Storage Spaces for the past 7 odd years, maybe more. Sorry. I promise to make amends.

Going to have a look through this Bazaar package manager and see what takes my fancy.

Great stuff. You're probably aware of this, but its always useful to check protondb for the game you want to play, especially older titles. If you're anything like me over time you'll figure out a standard set of launch options you'll want to add to any new game (mangohud, sound settings, etc etc) in Steam/Lutris/Heroic whatever, and protondb gives you a headstart on what other people have found to work or get a better experience.

Thanks for that tip. I had no idea about that site. I saw a video with a tip to make my library a dynamic collection and choose verified and playable which sorted out my current games. This is class.

No worries, I'm glad it was useful. Also, that's handy with verified and playable tags; but realise there is usually as way to get things working even if a game is not officially recognised as such.

Regarding launch commands, as an example, this is what I use as the launch options for KCD2 (but I use the same settings for almost all my games in reality) "MANGOHUD=1 PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 %command%" as I like to have mangohud available in case I want to check performance, and the pulse settings is because I got a little bit of sound breakup back when the game was first released and it never seems to do any harm, there's lots of other commands but luckily a lot of games have options through their internal menus
so nowadays they aren't strictly required.

Edit - to be honest over the last 18 months or so some great progress has been made in game compatibility so tinkering and "improvements" and personal preference is now mainly what you have to do - rather than outright just trying to get something to work. Whatever the prevailing attitude to Valve is, they really have driven gaming on Linux whereby it is no means perfect (I personally still dual boot to Windows for VR and certain games) but it is at least viable to have an almost install and go experience most of the time.

Jeez, a further Edit - Protondb is particularly handy if running a Nvidia GPU, as up until recently Nvidia had a particularly ambivalent(!) attitude towards Linux, and open source Linux drivers still suck (imo) compared to open source or official AMD alternatives.

Also check out gamescope. This has similar launch options that can help with game compatibility and make your experience better. For example, I fixed an issue with game stutter on Hunter Call of the Wild by using gamescope options. You can also get HDR working using gamescope, if you are also using KDE Plasma.

Thanks lads, this is all good stuff. I'll need to look into how to customise what mangohud is displaying. Done a quick search and I believe there is a conf file somewhere I can change. I'll get into this later this evening when I'm home.
While my monitor is HDR compatible, I wouldn't exactly say it was of any use.
