Im thinking about getting a 74gb raptor. My PC is fast enough and windows boot times dont really bother me much. But is it really worth getting a raptor ?..

Well that depends on what your going to use it for, as you already have a lot of hard drive storage space. If you want fast read/write for a C: drive, you should maybe consider putting 2 raptor drives in RAID 0 (either 36 or 64GB).
 
I use a 80GB samsung for windows and another for games. Then two 250gbs for storage and another hitachi ide in my other pc which is 250gb for backups.

no its not worth it i dont think just get a nice 7200rpm drive. I am have 1*80gb and 1*40gb both 7200rpm and there fast enough for me.
 
I think when the Raptors came out, they were very quick drives.

These days, they are no faster than any other SATA drive out there... No faster than any other IDE either come to think of it.

The Hitachi and Seagate Drives ( The 80GB Sata ones ) are just as quick as the raptors... I did a couple of tests comparing the Raptor against the Seagate a while back, and IIRC the raptor accessed the data quicker ( Better for lots of little files ) but the actual data transfer was quicker on the seagate... Or was it the other way round???

Anyway, you will not really see any difference unless you actually run benchtests on them, and to be honest, if you need to do benchtests to see any difference, then that to me, says that they are no longer worth bothering with.

The Raptors have a benefit of having a 5 year guarantee with them, and this was a big selling point I think, but then, Many other drives also offer this too, so to be honest, no, the raptors are definitely not worth such a large price tag when compared to drives that offer the same performance and reliability... You are just paying for a name.

raptors are still the fastest at everything the new raptors are quicker than the old raptors. but even though its faster its a question of will you notice the difference, comparing a fast drive and a raptor then the real world differnce will be hard to tell i feel with out using benchmarks. how ever if you want the fastest and you have the cash then raptors it is.

well i have a 36GB raptor 16mb cache and an 80GB Seagate 7200.9 and the raptor is much faster at access and read speed as u can see.

My 74gb Raptor is pretty nice, like you I wasn't fussed at all about boot up times, but in games I seem to notice some sort of difference, maybe it's just because I want to see a difference though? I'm not sure.

Erm, No, actually, I dont.

I am, as I said, comparing it with my old Seagate.

I will do a HDTach myself, but I no longer bother with my Raptors, its in one of the kids PCs... I see that on Massive's Pic, that his Raptor 36 is giving him marginally over 80... Thats good, I have to say, and when I compared mine, I was on an NF7S... It might be different these days, but I know that I got nowhere near 80... More like 65 Im sure it was? but I did not have HDTach back then... I was using Performance Test I think?

Hang on... I got a few brand new Drives here... AMong them I got an IDE and a SATA seagate that are both 80GB... I will attach them both alongside the 36GB Raptor in the missus' PC. I dont think that will be a fair test really cos its a Foxconn 6100 and thats perhaps the most useless system I have ... Hence the missus using it.

But here goes... Gimme a few.
 
They are faster but the Seagate 7200.10 is faster than most other normal drives and costs the same, for the average user there is no need to spend the extra.
 
Ok, I have just done a couple of tests...

Raptor 36GB
Seagate 80GB
Hitachi 80GB SATA

Did a couple of others too, WD200 & Seagate 250.

All are SATA and all beat the Raptor... the Seagate 250 by a fair bit, the others just about.

Ok, my FTP is down at the minute... I need to upload my screenshots to show you my results.

Anyway... As you can see... I find the Raptors are slower than 2 of my other drives.

These are the 2 80GB Drives and the bigger / Newer drivers are even faster, so I stick with my own experience and that is, that Raptors are slower than other drives.

Its been like this in all the PCs I have used it in, so I am thinking that maybe I just have a slow Drive then?

And here is a Maxtor 40GB - these drives are about £20 and are slightly bigger and faster than the Raptor I got.

Bugger.

Then again, If you check out the results of the Maxtor 40GB against the Raptor ( 8MB ) you will see, that the Maxtor is roughly the same age as the Raptor.

This shows that the boasts early on were a little bit exagerated somewhat, cos a £30 ( £20 these days ) IDE HD being bigger and faster than a 36GB Raptor is a little funny.

Ok anyway, my mistake... I do indeed have the 8MB one... Didnt think of that.
 
no problemo, cheers for doing the tests, to be honest m8 you are not alone in not reasling about the 8mb and the 16mb versions. lots of people are unaware that wd changed the 36gb and 74gb version to 16mb to match the newer 150gb.

I would probably consider an old 8MB/36GB Job to pair up with this one, but I dont think the speed increase is worth the price.

You got to look at it one way however... As you can see from those reults up there ( Not only mine ) but I myself am averaging about the 60-65, while the Raptor test is a good 80... thats 20 up.

Pairing them up and Raiding, then you could be talking real money in the speed area... Nice.

Right... I have a couple of SCSI Boxes too... I will run a couple more tests tonight... Comparing my slowest and fastest SCSI gear, although I know that the difference isnt 60 to 80, its more like 20 to 120... And perhaps Compact Flash IDE Adaptors too for a laugh.
