Raspberry Pi - $35 Linux computer

I got one of these a while ago but it sat in the box while other things got in the way. I dug it out in an effort to teach my 8 year old son that there is more to computers than youtube and games. Although he was interested in Scratch and a bit of programming it was all a bit abstract for him so I thought a robot project might be a bit more interesting, for me too :)

I know next to nothing about electronics, I'm learning fast though, so a piface seemed a good starting point. Got one and a bit of googling and switching a motor on and off is pretty simple. Getting two to run forwards and backwards a bit more complicated. More time with google and a Dual H-Bridge Motor Driver L298N was sitting on my table. This little board takes the output from the piface and lets you control a pair of motors..... more gogle and the connections to the piface were sorted. A little program in scratch and the motors run forwards backwards etc in response to the arrow keys on the keyboard :D

Hello.
I have just ordered my 1st Pi as I am thinking of installing it in my car to use as a Media Center. Has anyone done this?

I have a SatNav in my car that I spliced into the cars cigarette socket so it has power when the ignition is on and shuts down when the ignition is switched off. Is this possible with the Pi? I dont really want to start soldering wires to the actual Pi if I can help it.

anyone running their pi as a simple file server?
i just want to simply pass through a usb hdd. emulating a nas i guess.

which distro do you recommend if so?
 
I thought I would update on my success with raspbmc.

From my experience the speed of the flash drive used makes a big difference. On the super overclock (950mhz) with a old flash drive (~15-20MB read) the posters and fanart were slow, I tested all my drives with CrystalDisk and found one that read at 30MB which alongside the overclock gives me almost flawless artwork in confluence.
 
Pi as media centre player, Acer RL70 as server?

Hi,

I'm considering getting a Pi and using it in my living room as a wifi media player running xbmc, streaming content from my Acer RL70 which sits about twenty feet away.

Would this work well wirelessly?

Also, If it would work ok then I'd want to install a 2tb drive in the Revo, anyone recommend one and maybe tell me how hard it would be to take out the existing drive and put the new one in?

Quick question, I've just ordered a Pi from modmypi, I've got an idea for a program that can show nice text/images while needing to put data from a large file, I've go hours to put into this as it's a side project, but which language should I Learn for this? A friend has recommended java, any other ideas?

It might, although wireless signals can be more pro - - - - ne to - - - - - stutter - - - -ing - - - - and long pauses to - - - - buffer - - - ;)

Easiest way to find out is to try... For me wireless was too unstable to stream HD quality stuff, so I bought some powerline adapters and things have been perfect since then.

It's not that clear what you're trying to do, can you elaborate? My vote goes to python over Java even without knowing what your requirements are :p

Tons of languages have different pros/cons which could be beneficial to you and your program. I'd personally read up on the different languages to see what sort of programs are made with it and how difficult it looks.
 
Raspberry Pi

I really want to buy one as it is a nice little (cheap) project but not sure what to make use of it for. And they look awesome with some of the cases you can get.

What do people use theirs for?

Is it powerful enough to use as a media player (External HDD attached) in the bedroom?
 
As above. Mine is currently running MySQL and doing a little DB work. Not a lot though...

We have one at work connecting via RDP and RemoteApp (Terminal Services, y0!) running MS Visio! VISIO!
 
Mine runs the Raspxbmc image. As well as XBMC media player it has the LXDE desktop for dialling in remotely to tinker with settings, it also runs my Dynamic DNS agent and it is a FTP server I can access from anywhere.
