Raspberry Pi - $35 Linux computer

I'm running limelight on my pi. I've got an old model b but I've overclocked it to high. I find the performance is great, I did build my own fixed point opus, this helped greatly with sound stuttering.
I'm streaming at 1080p and find over 5ghz wireless
Is virtually flawless.
Played grid, pes, far cry 4, etc and all play fine.
Im also using a xbox wireless controller that's plugged
Into my PC, using one plugged into the Pi does cause problems.

Cheers, I still haven't gotten around to a fresh install but this has inspired me to give it another try...

Hi guys, wondering if anyone can help a complete newbie or point me in the right direction.

So far there is no destined use for what will be a raspberry pi purchase next week but love the thought of getting one geared up to play quake on my living room TV.
I've watched a few videos on youtube to understand the capability of the devices, and the differences between the B and the B+

I was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction on what to buy to get me started, or what I'll need at a bare minimum?

So far I understand I'll need;

- Raspberry pi B+
- sd card
- mouse (USB)
- keyboard (USB)
- monitor (what connection type?)

Any input appreciated, I apologise it's a bit vague. Back off to the internet I go to research some more :)

Are there any kits out there for beginners which accommodate for most of the types of connections i'll likely be needing to use? I've found one on the rainforest for bout 80 quid which has 40 or so peripheral connections included.

If you are going to connect a B+ to a monitor, or TV come to that, you really need one with an HDMI input...oh and don't forget that the B+ uses a micro SD card, as opposed to the larger one used on the earlier models.

If you like the idea of a smallish keyboard and keypad combined, then the Logitech K400 is a popular choice (I use one myself) and comes with one of those tiny USB 'dongles'. It also works straight 'out of the box' with the default (Raspbian) OS, and probably others as well.

I am sure that others on here will have some useful tips for you also.

Nah, I'll pay the slight additional cost for the insanely amazing software and resultant near maintenece free operation.

OR do both

But tbh a HP Microserver + Webmin is about as maintenance free as you need. It maybe takes an extra hour to set up, but who's tinkering with their NAS more than once a year anyway?

This may interest you too trentlad..

Basically a beefed up Pi

Mini PCIe... now all we need is nVidia to release a Mini GTX970 and we're away!

I just have my Raspberry Pi (model B+), and I love it!
I first ran Raspbian, but I wanted more.
So now I am running Raspbmc, and it runs awesome!

Has anyone actually bricked one of these before? Is it even possible?! I've tried two memory cards now with different OS but it just refuses to display an image on my monitor (tried two monitors and two HDMI cables), it powers up and everything just the monitor doesn't recognise a signal.

Edit: WTF, I spent all night trying to sort this bloody thing only for me to try the other HDMI port on the monitor and that worked, even so I tried TWO monitors. This is with another HDMI cable too so unless I have two broken ones...

I'm not sure wether to go Raspbmc or OpenELEC, all my content is on a NAS, which do you think?

Actually Raspbmc has now virtually reached EOL and is about to be replaced by OSMC. Although the latest available version is alpha 3 with alpha 4 about to be released any day now it is surprisingly stable.

Despite encountering problems with both Raspbmc and also openelec, but I had OSMC up and running very quickly and was able to install BBC iPlayer and watch both live and 'catch up' programs.

It is being developed by Sam Nazarko who is the chap behind Raspbmc and you can find more about it, together with download links, at https://osmc.tv/

A quick question, maybe Googable, but does OSMC works on a Raspberry Pi B+??

Or do I need, in order for OSMC, an other board??

Kind Regards, Rik
PS. What means EOL??

Nt used mine since Mashup went down. Any alternatives

Secondly it won't even boot.. It shows the red power light but the light that glows orange when a ethernet is connected isn't lit. It basically won't do anything.

Hi Rik,

Yes, OSMC does run on a B+ which is what I was using, and you don't need any other hardware, other than the obligatory mouse/keyboard (which can be wireless) and a monitor... oh, and an internet connection too of course!

Although, as I mentioned earlier, OSMC will effectively replace Raspbmc and be included as part of the NOOBS package, it is currently only in a surprisingly stable alpha release, with Alpha 4 due to be released any day now.

Personally I would wait for that to be announced, as although I installed Alpha 3 last week without any problems at all, followed by a BBC iPlayer add-on, an update to KODI a couple of days ago managed to 'break' it, so I will try it again once the new release is available.

For anyone trying a Raspberry Pi for the first time I would personally recommend downloading the NOOBS software from the 'official' site first, and installing the default OS Rasbian before trying anything such as OSMC.

Just be personal thoughts anyway, which I hope will be of interest, and I will be pleased to post again, if requested! :)

This usually means either a problem with SD card, or if you're on an older model pi I can be that the thermal fuse has tripped and you just need to wait a minute for it to cool down and reset (this often happens to my pi after it freezes playing back a huge file or something)

First of all, thanks for your huge post ;).
I seem to get it all.
I'm now running XBian, and I like it.

So I am going to buy some MicroSD cards, for all these OS'es
But one question, does OSMC have addons to stream movies and TV Series?
Addon's like 1Channel and so on?

Or can I only hook my own NAS up on OSMC?

I hope you can help me further in this learning process.
Greetings, Rik

Ok so this is weird, i decided to do a fresh set up. I installed openelec 5.0 on it and it booted up fine and what was needed, i installed a few add ons however every time it said script failed? so i went to reboot the pi, and its doing what it did before and just shows a red power light but nothing happens ? isit broken and if so why was it working until i rebooted it.

Any over clock applied, what power source are you using and what peripherals have you got plugged in?

SD card corruption is usually caused by an unstable overclock or a power source that can't supply enough amps

Turbo OC but im running through a USB and had no problems for months on end prior.. i stopped using it for like 3 months went to try it out and it just shows the red light but no action was happening, so i did a fresh install and put openelec 5.0 on the SD card/ sorted the USB out, and it all worked apart from add ons failing. Since rebooting its doing it again.. i have a heat sink on too... maybe its the OC, i'll try it without and start a fresh again.. fail that maybe its the SD card no idea.

all im using is wireless keyboard dongle, and USB stick to run it.
