Raspberry Pi - $35 Linux computer

I wasn't interested in any other function of the FTV, I simply wanted xbmc. I didn't like the way I had to load the app, when I switched it on I wanted xbmc, not their launcher then have to find xbmc. Apparently earlier versions allowed the use of an xbmc launcher but they out a stop to that (for now anyway).

I also found the remote to be lacking in functionality, and buttons so customising wasn't an option.

And further to my earlier USB3 comment. This also makes it sooo easy to update. Overwrite the OS on the sdcard with a newer version, modify a single line in a txt file on the card to tell it to use the usb and you're done. All your settings are preserved!

This is true *most* of the time, but occasionally when the update crosses over major XBMC/Kodi revisions the settings don't transfer neatly and in the worst case examples you end up in the infinite-reboot loop...

Still even when that happens it's easy to wipe the USB and start again, just a bit annoying having to re-scan all media

Very true, but for the minors it's great. For majors I would always want a clean start anyway, just in case they've made big changes.

My library DB on my nas so just got to point it there.

Just got a HiFiBerry DAC+ for my raspberry Pi 2 :)

I copy everything under \\openelec\storage which is my entire USB stick. I probably only need \\openelec\storage\.kodi or even \\openelec\storage\.kodi\userdata.

Ordered a Pi2 for Kodi duties this morning, wanted the Pimoroni Ninja case but they're out of stock at Farnell with an ETA of March 23rd

Need to find a few more things for the Model B to do alongside temperature monitoring now.

Thats a different line to what you emailed me, I think I may have to look at shove FTV on. I'm in the minors here lol, this box is far better than my android equivelant I just need to configure it right.

It could be heading to yours punt!

WTF you on about Tipsy? That's the UNC path for the samba shares that openelec serves. I never mentioned anything about that to you.

Shove FTV on??? Don't know what you mean by that? :)

Bring it over but not this weekend, the little one's birthday so got lots planned.

Hi guys,
Looking into setting up a small Kodi box to use for streaming media and so on. Can't decide between a Pi 2 or the Amazon Fire TV.

Would I be right in saying that for a basic setup, I just need a Pi/Micro-Sd and a power cable?
I can use my phone as a remote and will use Ethernet for streaming.
If I wanted to make use of AirPlay through OSMC, do I need a bluetooth adapter or does it work through my home network?

A Pi 2, SD Card, Case and power cable come in at £47 at the rainforest, the Fire TV is on offer for £64....which too choose!

See my post here: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=27623933&postcount=3069

You'll also need a card reader if you don't already have one.

The power supply listed is recommended, or any other that states "for RPi 2", as I've found many that are underpowered, even though they say 5V / 1500mah.

I want to use my in car Pi more, but it's a pain to shut down before I switch off the engine each time.
Trying to think of a way around this.

For anyone else interested in a media centre bundle I got this one from the PI hit the other day (http://thepihut.com/collections/ras...dles/products/raspberry-pi-2-media-centre-kit). Took about a week from shipping date to reach me, but CPC won't deliver to somewhere that isn't the same as the billing address and I wanted mine to reach me at work.

The sd card came with NOOBS installed, with options for open elec or xbian when booted up. The bundle wasn't a huge saving on just buying stuff separately but I worked out it cost me £1 for the HDMI and ethernet cables basically, so I thought it was worth just getting the bundle.

Power source from a non switched live,ie straight from battery or similar then a switched live (from original stereo harness or similar) connected to a GPIO pin then a script that runs sudo power off when that pin goes low.

For simplicity you could do it on a cron job that checks once a minute to see if the ignition has been turned off

was confusing myself with fusion plugin and the ftv one (ftv addon), scanning what was on the android box :) so what could go on this.

I will pop down This weekend, wanna run this instead of the M8 box.

Hi guys,

Just got a Pi 2, looking to use it as a media centre type ordeal hopefully streaming films from my PC upstairs to the TV. Couple of things;

I put a 64GB Micro SD card in, along with a keyboard/mouse, 2A Samsung Tab charger and HDMI cable and the red + green LED were stuck on and I couldn't get anything to output. The SD card was formatted, any help?

Also, what's the best to use for the stuff I require - I heard OpenELEC is a good OS, or "Kodi" (used to be called XBMC?)

SD card just formatted or actually has something installed? The pi has no BIOS or anything to speak of so you won't get output without something on the card to boot from

OpenELEC is good, though "Kodi" (yes the renamed XBMC) is a piece of software rather than an OS in its own right... OpenELEC runs Kodi - the other main two alternatives are OSMC (previously "raspbmc") or Xbian... all have their pros and cons

It was fully formatted, took it out from my tablet, formatted it in the PC and put it in

Thanks for the explanation - do all of the programs/OS's you mentioned have the ability to stream from a PC then or only OpenELEC + Kodi?
